What a perfect solution. You are a very talented seamstress. I don’t have the equipment or the patience to make these myself, but appreciate the brilliant design. If you ever want to make extras and sell them, I would definitely be a customer!!!

You are brilliant! That is the best execution of a home-spun screen that I've seen so far. A little more work, but the results look well worth it. Well done!

Thanks! It seems the less obvious it is to attach a screen, the better it works out in the end.

Nice job. What about fastening a metal strip on the doorstep along the edge or some rivets for magnets to attach too? Or if sticking with that pouch, you can cut off the extra now and use to store the screen in, just need some closures on it instead of sewing closed.
@averysmallcampervan4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. I did think about somehow putting some metal down at the doorsill but didn't think of rivets... they would be easy to install, and all that was needed. I like the idea of the screen storing in the pouch, nice idea!

To keep netting in place while sowing, one may use painter tape(white one) and sew right thru it. Then just rip it off.

You always come up with the most brilliant ideas!!! I am a huge fan! I wonder if it could be done without a sewing machine, since I don't own one.
@averysmallcampervan4 жыл бұрын
Thanks - I guess it could be made without a sewing machine... maybe by reinforcing the edges with some duct tape and sticking the magnets inside the tape as you go along... You definitely need to reinforce the edge or the magnets will tear through the netting!

Thanks Kim! I hope you find a van and get camping - remember to start with just the basics and see what kind of build you want. I love having the kitchen in the back under the liftgate but others think I am nuts not to have it inside!
@FindingMyMuse3 жыл бұрын
@@averysmallcampervan I have gone back and forth for the layout but have been taking notes and making sketches for a couple years. I think I’m going to have to wait and see though. I feel like, if I’m going to cook in a place where the hatch is open then I’ll likely set up my kitchen outside like I do when I’m camping. (I tent camp a lot). I might want to have a small table and a way to make a cup of coffee inside but if I’m ever stealth camping and can’t be outside to make a meal, likely, knowing me, I’d just pick up something from a local restaurant or takeout. At any rate, the wood work you do is excellent and your attention to detail is so good…I wish I had your skill set. But I need to get a mini van first. 😂🤩
@averysmallcampervan3 жыл бұрын
@Kim Davis You could probably have a way to have the kitchen in the back but be able to access it from inside. If you had a bed/couch that folded up sideways you could sit at cook from the end of the couch. It is a challenging puzzle to try to get everything you want to fit in a small van.
@FindingMyMuse3 жыл бұрын
@@averysmallcampervan agree! I have three design plans. Essentially all 3 designs have these main areas; bed, clothes, kitchen and emergency (2am) potty. I’m convinced to make the upper back window areas into “cubbies” as that seems to be wasted space. I know I want the bed frame to be a touch wider than a twin and to easily convert into a narrower couch. I want a lagoon table with slots for it to be positioned at the front or back (or even middle) of the couch. I want a fridge. Don’t care about a permanent sink or stove (as long as I can make coffee and very simple snacks inside). I want airflow so think it would be easier on me if I get a minivan with a moonroof - though I also want a Thule up top to carry a tent, tarp, chairs, outdoor rug and enough room to pack out trash). I have a super modest budget so finding a good used minivan in that price range in my area is a challenge. 😍😍😍

Great ideas here! The bias tape you used... was that double fold bias tape? Was it just 1/2”? Wondering what size tape I’ll need to fit the 1/2” magnets into.
@averysmallcampervan3 жыл бұрын
Hi Curtis, yes, I used double fold 1/2 in bias tape. There should be room for the magnets, if you don't sew it too close to the fold... don't know if that is clear.

I'm going to give this a shot!! any recommendations for the screen material?
@averysmallcampervan2 жыл бұрын
mosquito netting from fabric stores or camping supply places. You want the fine flexible stuff, like you would find in the windows of a tent, not the wiry stuff in house windows.

@averysmallcampervan4 жыл бұрын
Carol, I'll have to think about it. Camping season is very short here in Canada, so I am using all my free time to be out there in the van. Maybe over the winter I could look into making a few. I'd may be quicker to ask someone near you to sew one based on the video.
