Shops that tell customers to "go pound sand" are forgetting about the internet business review sights. Customers can go online and report their negative experience to the whole world. It can put those shops put of business. They also forget that the customer could be a lawyer, related to a lawyer, or work for a lawyer.

from what I saw the failure was almost certainly NOT related to the work the first shop performed(in fact the customer was aware some of the things were not working BEFORE the elbows were replaced) Tho bad business if they did say "pound sand" I have had customers tell me things about nearby shops I know they would never say or do IMO the module was already bad and the customer noticed the other failures due to "heightened awareness" post repair)

They are apples and oranges... ETCG does what he's familiar with, though he's not into scopes and he did lots of work for dealer. Eric O grew up tinkering with things, a family that did this for a living, as far as I know never went to a formal school for wrenching, and exposed to more variety than ETCG, like farm tractors, diesel rigs, etc.

@CubasAutomotive
@CubasAutomotive 5 жыл бұрын
@@jws3925 yeah, the Fairmount did it for me too, though I do check out some of the topics from time to time, just not so much the repair stuff. Plus the latest was the Mini, and I certainly have no interest there. I just think that everyone has their interests and their own niche, not to say one is better than another.
@CleanSC
@CleanSC 5 жыл бұрын
Two different channels, for sure. SMA is more diagnostic stuff, ETCG was more nuts and bolts and DIY stuff. They came from different beginnings which colors their directions. The Fairmont was not his audience but it was a passion project for him so I wouldn't fault him for it. The MINI Series was very educational on several levels so it was a worth watch for most, whether you fix cars or not. Cliff Notes: MINIs are expensive junk, stay away. A very valuable lesson to be had there, even for techs. Now I know if someone comes at me with one, or asks me about buying one, I know exactly how to advise them. Both good channels.

Other shop had no class, it doesn't matter if they had anything to do with the failure or not. Never tell a customer to pound sand! However I heard the old phrase "ever sense you worked on my car" more times than I can count. Some how some customers think just because you work on their car everything that goes wrong from there on is your fault. In 45 years I never told one to go pound sand. I did throw one or two out of my shop after they threatened to beat me up!

For us DIY'ers: The Class 2 Serial Data network on a GM uses a zero to Seven Volt signal; the voltage rests at Zero volts when there is NO communication; the transmitted data is a variable pulse width signal; Class 2 is found at Pin # 2 of the DLC, and is a single-wire network system; and GM uses what is referred to as a “splice-pack” to connect modules and the DLC to each other for network communication. Great video Eric, that little U scope is getting around!

In regards to the module, occasionally I see things just randomly die from having the battery disconnected and reconnect. Either that or the shop shorted the alternator, and then disconnected the battery once they realized that's what they should of done (shrugs). Thanks again for all your videos. They've changed my life, and 4 years later I've quit my job and work on cars full time successfully.

Many shops get a bad rap despite there innocence As they knew they were not involved in anything that should have caused this failure I can understand the unwillingness to "fix it for free" I doubt they told the consumer to"pound sand" more like "sorry sir our work was in the engine compartment and unrelated to the problems caused by a trunk-mounted module" The consumer then bad mouthed the shop and may well have told SMA"they told me to pound sand"

That AES Wave oscilloscope case looks just like one of my gun cases save for the fancy logo.

The other mechanic was in there unpluggn the battery which is right next to the RIM module. Could the key have been left on when they unpluggd it or was there something else they could have done while they were in there to short out the module? I guess we’ll never know. Good thorough diagnosis Eric. Ya left no doubt in my mind the RIM is bad.

Seeing that battery under the back seat brought back bad memories of my 02 Oldsmobile Aurora 4.0. The car was nice till it hit a 140,000 then trans, Parasitic drain on the batt and then the classic head bolt failure.

One more test you could preform would be to have Ms O hit a button and watch the data jump on the scope then you would see that data on the network. Also you could test the outputs of the RIM while a button is being held. Alas this probably would have been overkill in the testing department. Fine job. Hope you post a video of it working after the repair.

Just Friday night my 1993 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 lost power to the turn signals to the radio to the AC. I got my scope on a rope out and started checking fuses and none of the fuses were bad and when I got done doing that everything came back on so evidently I Josseld something.. but I don't know where whether it was the fuse box under the hood or it was the fuse box under the dash.. but it's working now I also like the fact that you have a Missouri license plate and a Florida license plate on your wall I was born and raised in Missouri and now I reside in Florida .....imagine that....?

Might check the ignition lock cylinder. They have a habit of not fully returning to the RUN position after starting. When they do so you get no function of ignition fed accessories. Try turning the key back towards you after you release the key after starting the engine.
