Even in Japanese it’s unclear but assumed yes but it’s based on a comic which continued for several years after the movie was made. The last comic (the only one I read after seeing this recap) they’re alive but the main girl refuses to be friends with them thinking it’s impossible for people to reform and repent themselves so it’s impossible to go back and fix relationships. It’s pretty stupid and fatalistic and I’m glad I didn’t read the first 370+ episodes of the comic.
