EXCELLENT! I am an old-school (79) woodwork -lover, a few power tools, storage shed full of rusty old tools and simply exhausted with these guys with their drill presses, routers, blah, blah,blah . I just wanted to build some simple structures for my many feathered friends. You just moved to the top of this old man's list! Thank you for a common sense approach to this project! Good show!

I am a 55 years old kid. I have made bird houses out of many things...tin cans, plastic bottles, mild cartoons, you name it. Making a wooden bird house on my own, from start to finish, is on my bucket list. I love the idea of providing shelter to a wild creature, while so many habitats are disappearing daily. I hope I am successful at it. Thank you!

I'm not an expert, but I'd like to pass along a couple of things I've read. The hole size will determine the type of bird that will want to make a nest there, so some research may be needed. Also, I've read that it's wrong to include something for a bird to stand on. A bigger bird can land, poke its head inside, and hurt the little ones.

The number one thing is to enjoy whatever it is that you're doing as much as possible. I thought of pointers throughout the video but that comes from experience and tool use. We people who are pointing out the design flaws are not trying to be negative-- we want birdhouses constructed that will be used (not ignored) and that will not allow predator species to kill the baby birds. I think the overall design here is great-- fast and cheap is good because then you can make a lot of them and the birds don't need fancy. But the dimensions (height and hole size) need a few tweaks to make it secure for the birds.

I like that it's quick to make. It is like a great basic house. The way I look at it is, I can make it as shown or with ingenuity I can add something so it can be used in a different way, like how it is mounted! I am going to make it with a long back so I can mount it on a post or a tree with screws to nice it later. I like these screws for the top idea! I might make it so the top is hinged so that I can just lift it to clean.

what i like about that video is: you can do this project with minimum tools...not everyone has all those very expensive and fancy tools. Thumbs Up !!! RCexperimental
@winterishere98284 жыл бұрын
Small innovation, that I've made was to only put 2 nails holding the front piece, both at the top. Instead of the two lower nails put 2 of those eye screws (like the one you put in the top), one at the front of the bottom piece and the other at the lower end of the front piece and then use a piece of wire to tie these together. The once a year all you need to do is remove the wire and the front piece will hinge out and you can then easily clean out the house with a scraper and close it again ready for the next nest.
@RCexperimental4 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea, thanks for sharing!

I made one like you say also! The front can be made to swing out from the bottom too!
@CobraDove11114 жыл бұрын
Cool! Or, you could nail or screw in a small block of wood on the bottom piece to turn up or to the side to block the front, and turn it to the side to let the top swing open to clean it out and then swivel the block piece up again to stop the front part from opening again

Not much wrong with this build.Just tweak the hole to the type of birds you are trying to attract,add some holes for drainage and ventilation and it's good to go.It might be a good idea to make the back of the box a few inches longer than the front as then you can then screw the box to a fence post or tree.....good job

The kids and I had a ton of fun building this birdhouse. We are super novices, so the simplicity of the construction was great. It's not really a complaint, but just thought I'd mention that the most folks don't have the special attachment you need to drill large holes -- I certainly didn't -- so that is one small obstacle to getting this project done right. On the whole, a great video and very well-presented!

Attach the back extending below and above the birdhouse so that it can be screwed to a fence post or tree trunk easily. (-;
