2 years ago we had torrential rain here in Australia at Xmas time. Roads / highways were cut off & I recall a lecture I gave & had included a need for a get home bag for the car. I received an email from a past delegate who gave me a huge thanks as both her & the husband were stranded for 2 days in the traffic. I had suggested adding the basic toiletries & with some food / water but a way to heat water. The wife told me they helped a family heat a baby bottle for a few babies but had some food to get them through the 2 days. Most people don't have a first aid kit in their car.

What great common sense information, ideal advice, especially for someone starting out or a beginner. All I can suggest is three very,very minor things that might improve your kit set up. One, add a ferrocerium rod/magnesium block to your fire kit, just in case your matches run out, or lighters run out of fuel or break. Two, swap out one or two of your pens for old fashioned wooden pencils, they won't run out of ink or freeze in inclement weather, plus shavings can be used as tinder. Three, add a small jar or tin of Vaseline to your kit for multiple uses. Keeps your blades and tools protected, has medicinal uses for chapped lips or chafing and can be used as great helper to start fires. Glad you included a whistle (looked like a ACR one to me) and toilet paper, people often forget this important item. One item I would perhaps add, as I am a great fan of it in the outdoors, is a US forces stainless steel artic mug. Great for boiling water without compromising what you have in your bottle, protects the more breakable items in your kit, you can even dig with it. The oblongish shape helps storage in pocket or pack. Great, keep up the good work.

From my experience (such as it is) try out your rucksack. I had to walk home from work a couple of months ago as all transport went south. Had my work rucksack which looks fine but is designed more like a briefcase in rucksack form. 13 miles, the shoulder straps were too far apart and I was in pain when I got home. I'd replace the sit mat with a cheap tarp. Multi use including to sit on when folded. Those cheap tarps weigh very little and if you duct tape up the eyelets they're a little more reliable. I only slept if I had to when I've had to "get home". A small brew kit and coffee was very important. Hot drinks at night are good for morale and the added focus can be needed. A poncho is good shelter most of the time because you can be up and moving with all your kit in seconds. If it's hacking down with rain at night build a shelter because no one is out there who has a choice.

I live in Appalachia, I like my old beat up Alice frameless rucksack, they are cheap at flea markets, lots of people in this area have then, od green. A pack like this doesn’t really draw unwanted attention. It also implies that this dude doesn’t have much money . If I’m trekking home most likely I’m going thru the woods. I like to carry some type of mora knife, muti tool, usually a folder on my person, and I have a lite weight short prang in my bag and and basically the 5C’s and that sitting mat.

Great video! In a SHTF urban situation I would also conceal carry a small handgun with extra ammo. My choice is a 38 SPL j-frame revolver. Also you shoud add a 4 way sillcock key for getting water. Just my added opinion.

Excellent I have 3 bags at different levels of equipment but you need to always reevaluate. I’m 73 with health issues but you still need to be prepared in case bugging in is no longer an option. Thank you

Excellent. I do much the same. One thing. Keep your water filter in your get home bag UNUSED so it's dry. Otherwise it can freeze which means it won't filter at all and you won't know it until it's too late.

I've learned along time ago.....especially with your gear! Well basically with everything that's important to you.... tools, knives, bags, gear, ect...... to try and buy the best version you can... buy once cry once!!and sometimes that requires you saving up for said item.... but looking back.... there wasn't anything that I HAD to have immediately where it couldn't wait until I saved up enough to get it!!!!!I just personally have experienced with cheap gear.... it just doesn't hold up and last quite like better stuff does!!! I think when it comes to setting up a bag....obviously using what you have available is key..... but it also is worth mentioning to go out and practice with your bag.... see EXACTLY the stuff you need! And the stuff you don't!!!!!! Getting out and using the stuff really helps with seeing what actually works well and what's just bag filler!

You showed the Cliff bars, I agree with a protein bar of some sort. Metrx makes their big colossal 100 bars, they have about 25-30 grams of protein per bar and around 400-420 calories also. They're not as flat as a cliff bar and don't have the taste that cliff bars do, but in my opinion I think that they would be a better suit for a get home bag. I'm not knocking cliff bars at all, I eat them and think that they are awesome, and taste a hell of alot better than the Metrx bars, I'm just going by a shtf situation. Excellent video by brother!!!! I loved your Walmart video. You got some great stuff from Walmart. Loved the stove you had. One thing I notice that no one ever puts in a survival kit is a flare gun why is that. Wouldn't a flare gun be a very worthwhile thing to get you found?

Great video. I would suggest a change of socks. Wet feet are uncomfortable. Gorilla tape around a plastic card. 20' or so takes up a lot less room. Gloves. You never know what you need to touch. A mask for dust or smoke. Maybe a knit hat to keep the chill away.

Nice setup. But if you want to leave the bag in your car all the time, you can sub the food with lifeboat emergency rations. TIP - wrap those vacuum sealed food bars in a long sleeve shirt real well - will keep them from rubbing against other stuff and losing their seal.

I was always taught by my survival Instructor with the get home be plain Jane then when you get home that's when you get out the assault pack if bugout is needed

If the grid is down the chances you might have to deal will treating trauma is much higher, so a small trauma/stop the bleed/MARCH-E kit would be advisable to have.

Look into grayl water filter bottles. Filters the water quickly and gives a means to store it after leaving a water source. There are also Katadyn filters which use collapsible bottles. Note my spelling of both names may be off. Your maps could in a pinch double as tinder. For budget purposes some cotton balls or flat rounds with some petroleum jelly burn for quite awhile as well; just wrap them in foil or toss them into an old Altoids can with a rubber band over it.

Excellent kit within the reach of anyone who puts forth the effort. My only comment would be to replace the cliff bars and jerky with something more shelf stable. Anything in those retort pouches like the tuna would be good to go.

Bob_BTW here. Wondering if you keep the water bottle always ful, keep a seperate jug that you refresh, or hope to find water along the way. I always have a 1.5 pint bottle that I fill before going anywhere, sometimes two, depending on how long I figure to be out and about.

Any fabric store sells elastic cord. Weave it any way you want, usually like a shoe lace, and finish it with a knot or a cord lock. Elastic will eventually fail. The bag will last way longer than the elastic. Be prepared to do it again eventually.

IMO, bugging out bag is essentially prepping to be homeless and living in the woods for a week or months even if needed because your home is no longer safe or usable for whatever reason. The get home bag, unique to each person's travel habits (work included) is the minimal necessary gear to give you the means needed to get from your typical furthest point of travel back to a safe location (friend or home) from which you don't need that bag anymore and are out of survival mode. Basically speed of minimalism versus long term viability of extra gear.

Also regardless of the masses, balance your trail foods between protein and carbs, add dried fruits or nuts if you can, eating high proteins with no fats or carbs will make you sluggish in the long run.

Not saying I agree but the thinking behind not having a pack that’s camo or has a bunch of molle is to blend in more with the public. Someone sees a military pack might think you’ve got some good stuff they might want to take from you. Mostly applicable in urban situations with a lot of people around. Essentially being more grey man. Again, not saying I agree, just that I understand the thinking.
