A couple of days after watching this video I went to Walmart and bought the backpack and water bottle you described. Yesterday I hiked 4 miles with my new gear. 4 miles doesn't sound like much, but the temp was in the 90's and I'm a geezer (77). I had a great day with everything I needed, my gear with room to spare, and plenty of water. Thanks for sharing your "Walmart" ideas. BTW, the water bottle was labelled $5 but when I checked out it rang up as one buck!

Those bottles are great. I have about a dozen now. The older ones I like better because the measurements on the side were white and easier to see than the black on the newer ones. The stainless steel caps are glued on with some crappy glue. They come off over time. I just toss them. A bit of headlight plastic polish and elbow grease takes the stupid logo off in a few minutes.

I suggest adding a deck of small cards, some dice, any super small fidget or brain game thingy that looks cool. I've spent well over 1,000 days alone in the sticks in under two decades. Just having a deck of cards was a big deal when it was either too hot or too cold to justify pulling up a solid camp under duress. For the life of me I can't remember the dice game I played for thousands of hours.

@@groovediggr8777 don't waste your money on insect repellant. I can't remember who makes it, but Skin-so-soft is the best stuff in the world. Nothing with more than 2 legs will touch the stuff. However, if you have a dog that goes with you do not use it on your pet. They have more than 2 legs and it will mess them up pretty bad.

The stove kit is called the Ozark Trails 4 piece All in one stove kit (12.97) and the gear is good quality and would sell separately for between $ 30 -40.00. Such a great deal, I bought 4 more for( Bug out Bags, family ) after my first one. Had to go to different locations because they only seem to stock limited numbers, at random times. Worth the effort.

This is Steve and not Melissa my wife. But, I just wanted to say that I was quite surprised by what my local Walmart store has in the camping and hiking gear section. Like you I have bought just about everything you have been talking about at my local Walmart store. And they have even upped there game on the type of camping and hiking gear they now have in stock. I was amazed to see the "Klymit" brand of camping and hiking gear. So when I found that out I ended up buying a "Klymit Static V sleeping pad and pillow. And though they might not be the best brand of camping and hiking gear. But I bought a "Slumberjack Dallas Divide" 65 liter backpack and "Slumberjack" 20° degree sleeping bag. I looked and looked for a decent type of two person tent. But my local Walmart either didn't carry any in that size. Or maybe they were just out of stock on the two person tents. So I ended up buying a three person tent that weighs about 5.5 pounds and is 7' feet by 7' feet by 48" inches tall. About the only thing I don't like about this "Outdoor Products" tent . Is that it doesn't have any type of vestibule on it. So I ended up buying one of those 5' foot So 7'foot tarps you were talking about. Hopefully I can make some kind of vestibule with that. So, like I was saying before I have bought just about everything you have mentioned. Plus some other camping and hiking gear that was either on sale or on clearance right now. I was wish I would have bought a few more little bottles of Seam Sealer. Because they had it on clearance for $1 dollar each. And when I came back to my local Walmart store. Too pick up some more camping and hiking gear. Someone must have bought the rest of what was left in the box they were in. Which was like a good 20 or more bottles of Seam Sealer. I'm now a subscriber of your KZbin Channel and look forward to watching some more of your videos!

FYI, that Ozark trail fire striker also has a removable cap on the 1 end to store some tinder in, I use cotton balls with Vaseline rubbed into them to start a fire when it's damp out.

Isopropyl rubbing alcohol is also good to start fires and to put into a cheap alcohol burning stove that you can get offline simply by googling and talking into your phone and asking for one of such, by the way Mama said she still loves Y'all.

Another piece of gear I love is the three pocket toiletry kit from the Walmart luggage section. It is 8.5"Hx10"Wx3". The center section opens up to hold my Esbit backpack stove, the Stanley pot/Cup, other items. The side pockets hold my utensils, folding saw, fire starting kit. Sewing kit, fishing kit. Etc. It is surprising how much this bag will hold.. The neat thing is this bag is designed to hang up with its own hook which holds it upright. With this pulled out and hung up, the rest of the backpack is very accessible.

@@wanderingcalamity360 I did not find a brand on the bag, but it has a middle main compartment with a smaller one on each side. When the middle compartment is open it unfolds and will hang from the top with the attached hook. It only comes in Black. Hope this helps!

Just FYI for everyone.....cottonballs covered in Vaseline in a Altoids tin work great for fire starters. And if you haven't seen them yet K-bar makes an awesome spork with knife in the handle.

@@savage22bolt32 If you spread the vaseline soaked cotton balls apart,they will light very easily with sparks from a flint and steel. Nice burn time too. Excellent way to help get a fire going. My fire kit ALWAYS has quite a few in it.

Two other things that all bags of this type need are a small multi tool that can range from $5 to $100 and a small assortment of zip ties. Zip ties can be used for hundreds of different uses...I personally always have a life straw in all of my bags and vehicles. They make great presents for the ones you love.

Something as useful and possibly life saving as a multitool, I would spend the money and buy a Gerber or Leatherman. Walmart multitools are very flimsy, the plier jaws get distorted easily, the handles flex terribly. This is one of a few tools not to be frugal with.

If a multi is all you got, then sure. But in a BOB, I'd rather throw 2 screwdrivers and an extra knife in the pack lol

You have 4 ways of starting a fire, not 3. You also have your camp stove with the piezo ignighter. If you put a stick on the flame, you can carry it to your campfire.

No one needs that much backup for fire. A ferro rod is a bushcraft toy. Leave that at home. Your bag has way too much gear. You don't need all that. Yes, it's cute and space saving the way your gear nests, but you don't need it. Consider what you really need and will actually use.

D Olin, I agree. Instead of taking stuff that will do 1 chore 4 ways, it's better to take things thay might do 2 or more things...like his back cushion is also a seat cushion. His tarp can be ground cover or shelter. I take out a washed out a 32 oz FL orange juice bottle which is super lightweight. I take out stainless steel tablespoon and fork from the kitchen drawer that can be used over the fire, not a plastic spork. My little camp skillet is the same vessel I eat out of. 1 stainless steel cup can go if i have instant coffee and doubles as a vessel to boil water...but on some trips that stays home. Ive been out with some that practically have a teaparty out in the wilderness. They are too busy playing house to see a drop dead sunset or photograph some rare nature shots. This guy isnt that bad, but some of the stuff people carry into the woods, you'd think Wolfgang Puck is going to be serving up some kind of gourmet feast.

I've also found that the smaller steel cup you mentioned. There's a red collapsible silicone cup that fits perfectly over the small cup, almost creates a perfect air seal. And acts as a lid as long as it's not on an open flame

I would add a basic head cover mosquito net and insect spray. Also, remember the lesson from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Always carry a towel. I have a closet in my house with survival type gear in it in case we lose power. Sometimes I have had to gear up the sterno stove and use it. You can cook on sterno indoors if need be. Army surplus sells a short machete with a scabbard I found indispensable when I lived in Panama. I lived in southeast Alaska for 7 years during my 20 year plus residency. The rain forest is dense, I found my machete very useful to quickly gather dead branches from old growth pine, spruce, alder for smoking, and gathering birch, and tidal pools, beach combing. Very necessary for saw grass , and breaking trail.

I know your video is on walmart items. However when it comes to paracoord. I just wanted to share with everyone about titan paracoord. It has several special strands in it everyone should use. It has wire for snare use and or cooordage. It has joot tender strand that is waterproof and perfect to help start a fire. It has a 25lbs fishing line strand and 7 coordage strands all wrapped up in the paracoord. It's not as cheap as some paracoord. But you get more for your buck with this titan coord. Not just the usage of tying things together. If you need to tie something and only need about 3 feet of cord. You split open 1 foot of titan and those 7 strands become close to 7 foot of coord. Then you have the fishing line, wire, joot and paracoord nylon casing to use for other things.

I’ve gotten most of my camping gear at Walmart and they have a lot of great stuff for cheap. I went back today and got that same cup, more fire starters, some fishing line for either fishing or emergency stitches, another tarp, more paracord and butane for my single burner butane stove. I also got my big Coleman propane stove there, which I love! I’m an experienced camper and generally quite handy so I’m actually really enjoying prepping right now. The state of the world demands it!

That stainless cup also nests with the water bottle on the side of the pack. I have the same Stanley pot and never realized they fit together. Guess I can carry 2 cups to boil or warm water while also cooking with the pot!

Another good headlamp from Walmart it the one made by Bushnell. It is rechargeable, 350 lumens, has spot & flood lighting as well as red light. I think that I paid around $30 a few years ago and it still works great.

Walmart also has seasonal cookie and cast iron combos for around $5.97. They go on sale after the holidays usually for around $2.50. If you season the cast iron you will have a absolutely bomb proof little skillet that still fits on a camp stove or on a fire. Plus the cookie mix isn't half bad either.

My plastic zipper was giving me trouble on my last trip. I thought to rub some stick deodorant on both sides. It was a little tough but after a couple zips it gave it the back it's slide ability. So consider things like chapstick, lotion, wax, deodorant possible, shampoo, conditioner to add some lubrication to plastic type zippers.

I have a canvas backpack from Walmart over 10 years ago. It used to be their High Mountain brand backpack. They look similar to your backpack. It's still my bug out bag. I use it for urban travel as well as a bug out in the winter. Surprisingly durable. My buddy used it once to practice for his firefighter qualifications. It held 50 lbs easily.

Something worth noting I that these backpacks have a lifetime warranty on stitching and zippers. One of mine was left outside under pine needles for 6 months. I found it, cleaned it off and the bag was dry rotted but the stitching and zippers were in great shape. Just remember the stitching on the straps is usually the first thing to bust. If you want extra padding buy a chair pad for an outdoor chair and tie it up around the straps. It will also give you a place to sit on the ground if need be

I have had the same pack for a number of years now. Mine is a solid sand color. The zippers have held up well. Mine is filled with UST, Ozark Trail, and dollar store goods.

I learned about the little steel cup a long time ago: I've paired it up with a double-walled Klean Kanteen bottle that I already own, so that I can boil water in the cup, and KEEP liquids warm or cold in the bottle. The little first-aid kit will probably go just as well in the car, meanwhile, given the plastic box it's in.

WM also has a UST knife for under $20, Full tang as it's just one solid piece from bar stock. Handle wrapped in paracord. Comes with ferro rod and sheath.

Yes I've found some decent kit at Walmart... the Mini Sawyer water filters, H2O purification tablets, the air weight stakes, stainless cup, the Orange match safe & lifeboat Matches... For cooking I strictly use the Esbit and BCB folding stoves which use the proprietary cubes, military hex tabs, alcohol, wood... I've even seen Walmart carry the packages of dehydrated camping food. Two of which I tried & weren't bad. Very good video !

I've found several useful items at Walmart. If you stick to the simple stuff like food, cordage, storage bags, fishing line/lures, etc, you're fine. You can even get several things from the hardware, home, and pharmacy sections. Where you run into problems is with bags, tents, and their actual "survival gear". Most of that stuff is crap. I bought a 3 day assault bag a few years back just for to haul food and cooking gear. Never carried it more than 100 ft. Just back and forth from the truck to the tent, and it's fallen completely apart.

​@janet1744 Alcohol not so much... but always have some ventilation. The Esbit stove/Military Hexamine squares are noxious. The gas from the camping stoves is noxious. The BCB Firedragon cubes - available at Amazon 6 for $8 - are solidified alcohol and are (with minimal ventilation) safe to use inside/in a tent. They do liquify as they burn. They were designed for the BCB folding stove. But if you have an empty tin cat food can, that would work. If you have a suitable metal container, like the cat food tin, you can burn hand sanitizer. There's also the Trangia (liquid alcohol) stoves... but always be safe and have s o m e ventilation. Lastly, the thing with alcohol is that the flame is difficult to see in the daytime/bright tent lighting.

I have the Ozark trail canister stove. My son and I have used it a few times while scouting hunting areas. A few days ago we were in 20+ mph constant wind and it boiled water for our mountain house meal (also at Walmart) I. Less than three minutes. I didn’t time it exactly but it was fast. Very impressed with that stove and about to order a few more. Great Video.

You could also add tea light or trick birthday candles in your fire kit. Crayons too if you really want to. Many Walmarts sell the commercial “fatwood” going into fall/winter and you can get an assortment of small fire starters that would fit in there too. The Lawn & Garden section might have a Gerber or Fiskars folding saw that would be a step up from the Ozark Trail. I always walk the clearance aisle too. I once got several packets of the Mountain House biscuits & gravy for $4 each because they were going through a reset. I also got black powder primers and powder once that way. Thanks for the video.

I’ve saved myself some headaches concerning cheap backpacks. When purchasing a bag for my school kid I’ll practically turn it inside out and inspect the stitching. I’ve discovered several bags that were hurriedly stitched that a corner or side is barely hanging together. I look for close to half inch or reinforced seams.

You can if you are going to keep that pack is add your own drain holes. You can purchase the grommet kits at most hardware or clothing arts and craft stores. Just two on the bottom of the main compartment and one or two at the bottom of the larger outside pouch and on in the bottom of both the side pockets will do the trick.

They are in the sewing section of Walmart. Here they have nickel, brass, or black. the nickel will wear over time to brass but the black wears off pretty fast.

I like the hammocks, those are the ones I use. I have no reason to get a more expensive hammock. I have 4 or 5. One & two person, I didn't get them all at Wal-Mart. I grab them, if I find them at Goodwill places. Or wherever. The mosquito net. Tree straps. Sleeping Bag liners. There's a handful of different types of stainless drink ware. The stainless UCO Spork. Or plastic version UCO Spork. A great EDC clip knife, Gerber Paraframe, and Paraframe mini (stainless). Frog Toggs, Stormwatch raincoat, I ordered the pants too. The Ozark trail camp lamps, AAA batteries. I love those things. The small hatchet, Ozark trail, I think. I was highly doubtful of it. But man, that thing will clear underbrush, and small trees with ease.

Awesome Review! If I may,I'd suggest an alternative solution as far as the First Aid kit is concerned. A customized First Aid kit that will allow you to pick and choose what you really need might be a better option. Walmart's pharmacy section has a good assortment of first aid supplies and other departments have some zippered soft cases which are more compressible and easier to pack. Here's a fun kit to build. I put everything in a 40 ounce peanut butter jar, except the tarp and cups. It has first aid, fire starter, knife, headlamp, space blanket, fish hooks with line, mirror, and much more. It's amazing how much you can get in it. Then I just throw that jar in whatever bag I decide to take.

Be careful the headlamps that use AA and AAA batteries tend to stop working (even if you change the batteries) if you leave batteries in them for a long time.

Thats exactly why I stopped using disposable alkaline batteries about 10 years ago, ruined tooooo many battery operated electronics due to leaking batteries. I now ONLY use rechargeable batteries, AAA, AA, C, D even 9 Volt. Sure they cost a little more but considering they can be recharged from 200 to 500 times and they will never leak battery acid and ruin your electronics they are wellll worth the investment. I bought a charger for about $30 that will charge 2 9 Volt or 4 of all the other sizes at once, it also has individual automatic shutoff so it won't over charge them. In addition I also purchased a solar charger that will charge all of the forementioned sizes but only two at a time. Since I have over 25 flashlights of various sizes and styles ranging from pocket size penlights to larger handheld to headlights to lanterns as well as portable radios they've saved me at least $1,000 over that 10 years. I also have a solar powered battery pack that will charge all of my usb rechargeables like cellphone , laptop, flashlights, camera or anything else that uses a usb to recharge. IMO it's been money well spent. I just wish they made rechargeable button/disc watch style batteries.

Great video. Only thing is a water purification kit. Yes, you can boil water, but, using a Sawyer water filter first is the ticket. My Walmart has them in the $20.00-$25.00 range.

When I was putting together my get home bag. They had an UST (urban survival technology) brand fire kit that was pretty good for $10. It came with a plastic “water proof” container to hold everything and then some. It had 6 cotton/wax fire starters and a fero rod. I was able to add a Bic lighter and tons of cotton balls to the kit to really help it make a fire when needed. They still sell the kit. It’s just way up in price. $14-22. For like $14 it’s not bad. Handy to have everything in 1 container, ready to go

Using the gas bottle adapter you can refill those small bottles from a big propane bottle A LOT CHEAPER than buying additional bottles. I have a usb rechargeable lighter that looks a LOT like the old zippo lighters the charge last a long time and mini solar recharger the size of a medium cell phone works GREAT on that and of course a cell phone or anything else using batteries. Of course backup lighters of any description reflect wisdom. GROCK CAVEMAN GOT FIRE !!!! Regarding illumination I grew up in the 60's- early 70's and if you were not there the difference in lighting options is LIKE 2 CENTURIES HAVE PASSED!!!

I recommend that your headlamp has a red light equipped on it as well for off the grid, escape and evade scenarios too. Red light prevents you from losing your night vision as well as the enemy not being able to see it like they would a white light

I was most intrigued by the cooking/nesting cup kit. Wow. I’m getting that stove. Had no idea. I just recently saw for $6 a small Ozark Trail cooking kit.(stainless steel one in a similar shape to the UCO mess kit) That’s a killer deal too. But the whole Stanley thing how you an fit the fuel canister in is awesome. I’m doing that whole system. I honestly don’t camp too much but I want something for my bug out bag and didn’t want to spend a lot on something I’ll probably never use. And if I happen to camp or whatever (or if there’s a blackout and can’t cook at home) I’ll have it for less than about $35. Thanks. I really appreciate your videos. I’m with you. I have the Stanley French press for coffee the nesting pot with the cup that goes over it. I see lotsa videos with people telling you that these expensive stoves for they’re size & weight but on a budget the Coleman one I bought at Walmart works beautiful & it stores in the pot.

I have had the Stanley pot and Ozark trail cup set in two of my bags for years. One stays in my truck. During covid I would stop and make coffee in a rest stop rather that buy it in a drive thru. I have the Esbit Alcohol backpack stove. It boils water in about 3.5 minutes. i enjoyed stopping in a rest stop for coffee and a break so much, I still do it. Several times I have cooked eggs, bacon on my Esbit stove when we had a power failure. The Esbit has a lid/frying pan that works well. Happy Trails.

Yuo kinda hit the nail on the head here. If you are using this as a GHB, technically, it can be a one time use gear. And, as that, it doesnt have to be bomb proof. Also, like you pointed out, if it gets stolen-you're not out a $500 Vrtex bag lol. Keeping the entire kit under $100 is ideal. That way, its not a huge hit should it get stolen.

I bought a SOG Ninja backpack at the Walmart in Smyrna Tennessee about eight years ago. It cost $35. I’ve used it a few times. Overstuffed it with heavy gear, and it was still comfortable to wear. I think that you made a mistake by not pointing out that the spork is attached to the retaining strap. Some people might think it’s a carry handle. Check your ferro rod, it might have a small compartment for your tinder. Lastly, get some Katadyn water treatment tablets. Very good video, and I own much of the stuff you bought. I even made a kit for my friend, who travels a lot, on back roads. Pretty much all the stuff came from Walmart, and it was about 50 bucks.

Thanks man! Great video! Another thing I use to pad the back area is a US military casualty blanket, Packs usually have that pocket there for a water bladder. The super durable emergency blanket has grommets makes a great pad but also helps insulate your water bladder. Love the Stanley and the cup, I got a round Molle pouch that it fits in, you can store lots of stuff in the Stanley too.

Instead of the Ozark trail saw, the garden section sells fiskars folding saws. Higher quality for a lower price. The 550 cord in the hardware section is about half the price of the same size hanks in the camping section.
