I have used sand bags in the past to weigh them down, but I kinda want to make some spools out of steel instead of aluminum and see if that makes them more stable
@XsionduАй бұрын
This was fantastic to watch.
@StripeyTypeАй бұрын
awesomesauce. :D Sand *does* work well for tube bending, but has to be fairly tightly packed into place to prevent the thing going oval-shaped. A close-fitting spring also works for this, instead of sand. You should put the spring on the *outside* of the tube you're trying to bend, so that you can actually remove it again. And last but not least: aluminum work hardens if you look at it funny, which is why stress cracks happen. Thankfully, if you're not relying upon the heat treatment of the aluminum for the strength, you can in fact anneal aluminum in the home shop. The trick in doing so is heating the aluminum enough to anneal it without heating it hot enough to suddenly melt. There's a trick for this! Regular black sharpie! Draw on the part of the aluminum that you want to anneal before you apply heat. Then begin to apply the heat, and when the sharpie mark "vanishes," the aluminum is hot enough, and you can remove the heat - it'll be soft again for a while until you work it.

21:19 A only the data line needed to zig-zag to make a continuous flow. The (red and black) "current" [as you say] not only could have, but should have all came in on the same side. This would avoid the voltage drop that long runs experience. It might no matter on this small series run, but longer runs should be wired parallel. Great work! ☮❤🌈

These are all great ideas and I appreciate your willingness to share them with all of us. Having played just a few gigs in my life I wonder if you have considered the stability of your stands. I have had "excited" fans knock full light rigs on tripods over during shows. Do you have a way to secure your lights so this is less of an issue? Seems like they are easily tippable. Anyway, keep up the awesome work.
@SuperValidDesignsАй бұрын
Great question! I think a lot of the instability is coming from the uneven ground in the shed. I had these set up in my garage with a flat floor and they were far more stable. But if they were to get knocked over, the fixtures are light weight enough to not cause any damage. Ultimately though, you could definitely weigh the bases down and I might even try a steel version of the spools to see how much more stable it could be with the added weight!
@KellyKatzАй бұрын
swiss army man vibes, I'm so in love with this lmao
@jasonthomashorn4794Ай бұрын
If you do another cut like you did the "bad" cut on the other side of the first channel and completed installing in that channel it would give some dimension on either side of the light. Especially in a low intensity setting. Do like how the second channel turned out but wanted to mention alternative solutions if you didn't have a backside.

Thanks so much! I decided to not patent and instead went the open source route because I think artists need an open source option for lighting hardware these days. Hey, super cool video! I have a question, do you have any suggestion on maybe upragind the stability of the tube going in the petal? It seemed a little shaky with the tall light posts.
@SuperValidDesignsАй бұрын
Good question! The stability issue seen in the video is more a result of the uneven ground of the shed but I’ve used sand bags to weigh the bases down before too. I’m also considering making some steel spools for added weight (current ones are aluminum)
@emile.gingras.artisteАй бұрын
@@SuperValidDesigns Okay, Cool! It would had a decent amount of weight to the packing... I guess you didn't have the same problem with the tripod version? Wouldn't the be also a way to secure the LED stick more firmly in the base?
@SuperValidDesignsАй бұрын
@@emile.gingras.artiste Yeah it would definitely add more weight which one of the big benefits of this system is it's just light enough to fly with without having to pay for oversized luggage but I can see there being a use case for the steel spools for certain instances. The tripod versions actuall fell over alot more because the legs didnt lock into place so they would pretty easily swing into an unstable position and fall over so I personally find these spool bases way more stable! I'm not too sure how I'd add more stability to the tube going into the actual socket but I havent had any issues with the stability of those. yet. Even the 8 foot tall pole i put in there sits pretty solidly in the base and doesnt really wobble. All the wobble you see in the video is from the uneven ground

I went to a club once that was some hole in the wall who was having a heavy metal show. The place had an ac unit that was built in to the ceiling tiles that was constantlu sparking and flashing dangerously. They also had literally laser pointers duct taped to a ceiling fan and the smoke the ac unit was making added to that light show. Only other lights were black lights and a red light bulb in the corner.. was still an awesome show and the club owners obviously didnt give two fucks so the pits were wild and everybody was chiefing out where ever.. good times…
