Build a Multi-Tap Delay Effect with Feedback using Mela 6.1

In this video, I take a more experimental approach to tutorials-it's unscripted, but hopefully just as useful and organic. My goal is to streamline the process so I can create more videos like this. Let me know if you find it helpful and what you'd like to see next!
I'm using Mela 6.1 (not yet released) to build a multi-tap delay effect with feedback, showcasing the new Delay and Feedback modules. The approach is designed to be useful for both beginners and experienced Mela users.

Thank you for this, Nikolozi. Very useful! I like the unscripted format since that feels more like what I'm doing when noodling. WRT the new Feedback module - will the sample delay be limited to "1" or will it be an adjustable parameter? BTW, it might be worth mentioning that a delay of one sample is only about 20 microseconds (at 48kHz) which would have no audible impact, but allows the programming impact we need here for this example.

Glad you found it useful. Regarding the Feedback module, do you mean adjustable in terms of samples or seconds? If you meant samples, the only other useful value might be 2 samples. I've considered it but decided to keep it simple for now. 1 and 2-sample delays would allow the user to create a biquad filter or something, but I don't think too useful at the moment in Mela. If you meant seconds, then you can just combine the Delay module with Feedback to get feedback with delays amount in seconds, tempo-sync or pitch. You just need to use the Delay module at the source (like I did in this tutorial). Now as you mentioned 1 sample delay still introduces around 20µs delay and that could be significant if you are using the modules to build a comb filter for physical modelling for example, as it can cause some detuning. To address that I've considered adding the ability to the Delay module to offset the delay amount by 1 sample, a toggle parameter. Alternatively, I could create a module called Feedback Delay that would merge Feedback and Delay functionality into one module. i.e. This module would receive input from a bus and delay it by a specified amount expressed in tempo-sync, seconds or pitch (hertz).

@@nikolozi I was thinking about different sample delay amounts, but that would require some kind of buffering, I guess, which complicates things, so it's probably wise to just stick with the single sample - a two-sample delay could be kludged fairly easily ;-). I hadn't thought through the detuning impact, but obviously you have. I like the idea of the combined Feedback Delay module, but if this displaces the Feedback-only module, then please include a switch to turn off the Delay part! I look forward to seeing what makes it into the 6.1 "Lab"!

@@bryanbaker6579 Feedback Delay will not displace the Feedback module, as I think the latter will have many different kinds of uses. I often add modules that make things possible with just one module even though they are already possible by combining 2-3 modules. Buffering is not a problem, in fact could even add Samples mode to the Delay module. But I don't want to just add a mode without considering its use cases. Once I know good use cases I can optimise features for those cases. So, what sort of use cases do you have for feedback delays that can be specified in samples?

@@nikolozi TBH, I don't really have any use cases for a multi-sample delay module. The Feedback Delay (with specified time) should be adequate. It took me a while to recollect why I asked the question to begin with. You see, many (7 or 8) years ago, I was a bit of an Audulus hack and watched a lot of YT videos from the likes of Bimini Road and Robert Syrett to try to learn all the nodes - how they worked and what to do with them. One of the vids featured the "Unit Delay" node which appears to be similar to your Feedback module. I remembered that when I watched this at the time I was asking myself "why a single sample delay and not have a parameter to specify multiple samples". I never pursued it with them or asked about it in the Audulus Forum. Thanks for the reminder and education!
