In your intro, where you have a hole cut in the wood, you should have your head poke through, and say "Heeeeeere's Stumpy".

For the material to cover the camera/glass you could use curtain blackout lining (Blackout Drapery Lining Fabric) - which is NOT necessarily black, but which lets no light thru.

would a piece of plexiglass work as a teleprompter glass?

Not likely. It's not reflective enough.

Reflective car window tint film might do the trick, perhaps.

I suspect tint film would affect the camera lens too much.

Why wouldn't a mirror work as well, if it's just reflecting the laptop or monitor screen? Obviously, this not my forte...

You'd have to either invert the monitor itself or mirror it twice over.

The transparent glass is in front of the camera and that lets him read the text while seeming to be looking into the camera. A mirror would block the camera.

Because the camera has to be behind the mirror, filming through the glass.

Avoid medical teleprompter glass it's 10X more expensive.
