This is without a doubt one of, if not the best tutorial for setting up a Raspberry Pi/Retro Pie build. There are many of them out there, but what sets yours apart is the split screen when setting up the buttons for the controller. With other tutorials it is done SO FAST that it is sometimes hard to follow. I figured it out after a few trial and errors on my 1st Raspberry Pi 3 build so now it is pretty easy for me. I am sure someone just getting into this hobby will really appreciate your patient and step by step way of teaching people how to set up their Pi. You don't assume anyone knows anything which is really refreshing. Thank you so much, and thanks for the recommendation on the case, it is really nice.

The Super NES games will probably run fine on a Raspberry Pi 3B plus. These are much less expensive then the Raspberry Pi 4 models, you may want to go this route. Once you build one, it is really fun to play, brings back some fond memories for me.

Even the raspberry pi 4 cannot run GameCube, PlayStation 2, XBox/Xbox 360 and PSP. Now that I have said that, the raspberry pi 4, can run Dreamcast to a certain point. Some games will work well if you have the right emulator and others will have problems. In summary, if you want to play arcade, Atari 2600 through the original PlayStation and MAYBE Dreamcast, the Raspberry pi 4 is your best bet.

Dang dude, 15 ads? This is exactly why I use adblock. I never used to mind watching an ad or two, but an ad an average of about every 4 mins? That's a bit much. You're a smart guy with a great channel, don't be one of "those" KZbinrs please.

I would like to add that it is VERY important to connect the hdmi cable to the outside micro hdmi port near the power button, NOT the one on the ‘inside’. You can see that it’s set up this correct way at 28:40 for a split second. I didn’t do this and got the games running ok, but without sound. I tried EVERYTHING to get the sound to work and wound up reflashing Retropie, reloading the games then it was good. So if you have the same issue I did, again make sure your hdmi cable is on the outside port.

Sorry to bother you, but I figured it out myself. You need to enter the console from the main menu of Retropie by pressing F4, after that you need to enter one line: argonone-config #configure driver . Press the inter button and the Y button. Then from the 4 options, select the one you need, I always choose 4 - this is the constant operation of the fan when the RP4 is turned on.

Hi, thanks for the comprehensive video. I'm new to Raspberry Pi. And I'm looking to build a retropie gaming system. I had a question for you... at the time of this video you had the choice between the 2GB version and 4GB version… you made a comment in the video that you might as well just buy the 2GB version and save some money because the 4GB version isn't going to do anything for you if you're just building a retropie gaming system. Can you explain why? I'm asking because I was looking at a kit that has everything in it, marked as an extreme kit from canakit, and the choices are between a 4GB ($1755) & 8GB ($200) version. There is also a more basic starter kit at $140 that is 2GB. My initial thought was more GB, more powerful, more capability. But you're essentially saying the opposite . So that's what my question is.
@marccaselle8108
@marccaselle8108 2 жыл бұрын
You only need (4GB, 8GB RAM) If your using your raspberry pi as a standalone desktop system. Retropie in and of itself, will NOT benefit from 4 or 8 Gigabytes of RAM. If you get a raspberry pi kit that has 4 or 8 Gigabytes if RAM, and IF your using it only for retropie, you are wasting money. A helpful tip. 🙂. My kit in 2019 came with 2 gigabytes of RAM and I've been using RetroPie on it for 3 years now and it's still going strong.

Hey there- I followed your steps with my son to build a Pi retro console, it all went really smoothly and he loves it so many thanks. My question though- I'm having terrible lag with the N64, I've tried different emulators, I'm reluctant to overclock it and am not very technical. I had wondered if performance is workable if I moved to a solid state flash drive instead of the SD drive, I even wondered if doing that and daisy chaining 2 Raspberry Pis was possible to boost performance. Any thoughts on that, is it viable or would it not provide much improvement? Are there alternate videos around for that, as inevitably, Goldeneye is a key driver for me!
@marccaselle8108
@marccaselle8108 2 жыл бұрын
With N64 there is a compatibility list that says what you can expect if you overclock your raspberry pi. However, the performance and notes about the games remain the same if you do not overclock your PI. The bottom line with N64 on a raspberry pi is, some games work well, some don't work at all or have stuttery sound and slowdown. Google raspberry pi 3b+ overclock compatibility list.

@LearnLinuxTV
@LearnLinuxTV 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, I'd prefer to have that option as well. It's a shame that Nintendo, Sega, and Sony won't make their entire back catalog available. They each offer classic games to varying degrees, but none of them offer their entire library for purchase.
@little_forest
@little_forest 4 жыл бұрын
@@LearnLinuxTV Yes, I thought you'd prefer that too from how you were talking about the ROMs. And though there are official releases of certain consoles as mini versions, then you are stuck with a fixed set of games of one particular console and you have paid quite much for it... The possibility to have a Retro Pi and then buy these few Megadrive games and this one SNES game you always wanted, and so on...that would be the best solution!
@LearnLinuxTV
@LearnLinuxTV 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely. We have the technology to make an iTunes-style "store" of sorts that just has everything for purchase. Nintendo could easily do this, at least from a technology standpoint. But I'm sure it's licensing issues that get in the way. The saddest part of this, is that physical games don't have an infinite life so companies really should do more to keep them alive.

USB wired is better ♥ here is why : (these are just my reasons. just wanted to type this if it helps anyone 🦊♥ ) 1). you don't EVER need to worry about external batteries (if it needs them) 2). u don't have to worry about battery replacements (if it dies out over time) 3). u don't need to worry about it dying mid game 4). the input lag is slightly less using Wire than using Bluetooth or WIFI (my personal fav reason) 5). u don't need to worry about first connection issues as its going directly into the system 6). and lastly YOU DONT LOSE UR CONTROLLER OR CHARGING CABLE XD ♥♥♥

Hi it seems like a good video but I am having trouble getting the system to find the rooms I downloaded. I downloaded a file called GameYob-master. I tried copying it to the rooms folder and I tried copying it to the gba folder. No new games are recognized after a reboot. Can you direct me to a place where I can get help? I also downloaded [BIOS] Nintendo Game Boy Boot ROM (World).gb and put that in the bios folder.

Also, I'm adding, Nintendo DS runs great, of course. The DS hardware isn't very strong. The problem is just, that the emulator doesn't work with all games.

I purchased LABISTS Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Complete Starter PRO Kit with 32GB Micro SD Card (4GB RAM). I'd like to add only old school SNES, Genesis, and arcade games (from the 80s and 90s). How do i do that? Is it hard? I heard arcade roms need to be done with MAME. What's the best way to accomplish all this?

Find your RetroPie's IP address. On a Windows 10 computer, open file explorer (2 windows). In one Explorer window, navigate to your downloaded ROM files. In the other Explorer window, enter \\ followed by the IP address of your RetroPie as follows: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx You should see your pie contents. Navigate to ROM and then copy and paste your ROM files from your Windows computer into the appropriate ROM folders.

You can run the same emulators on a PC. You can actually run better consoles like the N64 on PC which normally require overclocking a raspberry pi

You may want to look at the CoinOps option. This build was originally designed for the original modded Xbox, but they have moved on to a build for the PC. I will build one once I have the time. One really nice thing about it is that if you have an old PC in the closet that use to run Windows ME, 2000, or XP, it will more than likely be more than powerful enough to run CoinOps. In fact, as others have pointed out, you will be able to run some games on it that the Raspberry Pi 4 is just not powerful enough to handle. Just do a search here on KZbin for CoinOps for PC to get started.

@@VortexGameplayGaming Hi there, thank you for the response! Is there a video that you've seen that explains how to do this? Just lost my job and money is tight so otherwise I'd just buy a prebuilt standalone.
