I have a Raspberry Pi running RetroPie connected to my TV. I play old console games with my 13-year old daughter. I bought two USB official Sega Genesis controllers and we play Mortal Kombat II together. A 30+ year old game I played with I was young. Now she beats me almost every time and she says it's her favourite game. It's awesome.

I like that RetroAchievements shows indicators in the bottom right corner of Achievements that you can get in the level. For instance in Zelda LttP, when you are fighting Moldorm in the Tower of Hera, it shows 2 possible achievements, no damage and kill Moldorm in under 20 seconds. If you don't defeat Moldorm quickly or get hit, the indicators vanish, letting you know that you can't get them.

I've been working with Pi's since 2015. I have about 20 of them in almost every form and then some. I mainly use them for RetroPie. I have built images, downloaded images, and there really isn't anything new to them in terms of RetroPie. But, this video almost made them feel new to me after watching. I have never done the achievements and just might try that out. I also think it time that I generate a new image from scratch as those are the most fun. You guys really make it seem easy, and it actually is. There are a ton of areas to get into the weeds quickly though. But, you stayed away from that. Great video for a first timer who knows nothing about RetroPie and the Raspberry Pi!

Burning a image from retropie's website using etcher is easier than what you propose here. Also, use the keyboard to configure the Pi, and you do not have to deal with weird controls! A easyer method to transfer ROMs to the PI is format a USB drive and place an retropie folder in the root... stick it to a USB port on the Pi and it will create all the folders you need for all the emulators you have installed. Take the thumb drive and copy the roms to it using your computer. Stick it back on the Pi and let it copy the files from the USB stick to the SD Card. This way you do not have to deal with network transfers, SSH, hostname and password.

Very detailed tutorial, thanks a bunch! One problem I had following the tutorial was that I copied all the ROMS from my PC into the ROMS folder on the PI, without realizing that they need to go into subfolders corresponding to the type of game / console (nes - Nintendo Entertainment System, snes - Super Nintendo Entertainment System, n64 - Nintendo 64, gb - Game Boy / Game Boy Color, gba - Game Boy Advance, etc). In the tutorial, the ROMS folder they copied on the PI, already had the mentioned subfolders. Still awesome video, thank you!

Yeah, a video in 2024 about Retropie is certainly a choice, that project hasn't seen any quality of life changes in like 5+ years? Meanwhile Batocera has regular updates and they probably could have cut this video in half due to not having to tweak and adjust things in retropie in multiple different places (not to mention actual Pi5 compatibility). Oh that option, you need to change that in emulationstation, that option is configured in retroarch, this other option is found one of the labyrinth of options that is retropie setup.

Hey Nintendo, what's your problem? Being able to play all the old classics that sometimes aren't available, and to do that with modern controller support and save state functionality, means that a new generation of kids and adults can enjoy these on their own conditions, even those with disabilities that otherwise can't access these classics. Of course you can try to squeeze every remaining drop of profit from these games with a couple of re-releases here and there, or a subscription platform, but then you would lock it into a specific console (I take it you wouldn't do pc or PS releases) with its own limitation of accessibility (are you gonna add Remote Play to Switch or your upcoming console so disabled users can use their assistive softwares on pc for playing your titles?). But don't you care about your old games, ain't it somewhere in your cold corporate heart a place where these games and popular access to them and accessibility/inclusion is just a bit more important than a few millions here and there? And if you so desperately want these millions then work for it: make remakes with added value and accessibility to new generations and people with disabilities, make them accessible to pc and non-Nintendo owners and for the love of God give us Remote Play so you can reach a wider audience regardless of disabilities. Give us a premium emulation that is easy to setup and use for everyone - give us a reason to give you money for the games many of us once owned and you'll be surprised how stupid we can be with our own money in contrast to you, greedy bastards :). Do that instead of closing down Vimms Lair and others providing roms and emulators for these golden classics, the real friends of the Nintendo EXPERIENCE (in contrast to the Nintendo CORPORATION). Here you have an emulation fanatic that would actually pay for many of these if I just had a reason to, for example being able to actually access them duh. So are we gonna get Remote Play on Switch or your next console, should disabled people be able to play Nintendo games if you get to decide? I'd be first in line to buy your new consoles if I could access these with Remote Play on my pc that have eye tracking gaming tools, voice commands and facial gestures already setup for gaming. Definitely if you'd also provide a premium emulation service that's already setup in the console and has added value, then I'd pay once again for the games I spent all my allowances on as a kid. Act positively instead of clamping down on the biggest fans of Mario, Zelda and Kirby, The Preservers of the Legacy if you so will. You can be a greedy corporation like Apple or Sony or Microsoft without being a short-sighted stupid brute that both excludes people of disabilities and damages it's own reputation, ultimately losing customers to emulation and other platforms. Deduct the loss from what you profit on being hyper-greedy capitalists with no heart from what you gain on being an absolute douche and perhaps even you money-fixated executives will realize that it's either not really worth the damage or that you're even in fact losing money. Running around with lawsuits like a menacing corporate maffia everyone's afraid of is not the answer. You are clearly lacking awareness about what you are doing and you should stop it immediately, and instead act positively to win the hearts and minds of people. You're so used to brute force and threats that you forgot what soft power means. I care as little about your profits as you care for my economy and so many of your workers, but surely you would like more paying customers right? Then listen to an advice coming surprisingly enough from a disabled anticapitalist and act positively instead of targeting emulation enthusiasts with increasingly aggressive strategies.
