The reasonable sound quality is likely due to a few things in tandem. For one, the tire is shaped in such a way that reflecting audio waves is hard because of it's heloid shape, and rubber composition. Second, that cheap woofer is likely intended for a rather large box, but a large rigid box will flex just about as much as that tire, meaning the walls of that tire are acting as a passive radiator. And third, two genius audio engineers designed and implemented it for the sake of amusing and educating their millions of fans even when they are car-less.

@jakenuno99009 жыл бұрын
Marty's idea of the audio mechanics of the tire is correct! Also by having a sub attached to a tire, sitting in the trunk, you also allow the rumble of the bass to transfer to the chase and body, which would also allow 20Hz and lower to be felt stronger as well. In a car, not to important, but still cool especially for an audio guy like myself! :D
@Carluvr20117 жыл бұрын
It's funny cause automakers have actually started doing this with their factory installed subs. I've owned 2 Mazda's that came with the Bose premium audio system package and both had the sub mounted in the spare tire. Granted you were still able to use the spare. You just had to unscrew the sub from the tire and pull it out. Then on my VW Jetta I ordered what they call a Soundbox (it's a sub and amp in one) as a VW genuine accessory and upon installation realized that it takes up the entire spare tire well leaving my spare to take up trunk space unless I take it out lol.
@GeorgeWhittam5 жыл бұрын
I did this with my 1999 Subaru Forester and it DID work really well. Mine was mounted to an actual spare wheel/tire that is useable with a few minutes of disassembly. I made it so I could remove the subwoofer rather easily, no ruining the tire with a hole (that's just plain wacko). There is no good reason to put sealant around the edge of the wood, it seals well enough to the rubber IMHO. I held the baffle in place with long threaded rods and wingnuts. Makes me think I should do this again with my 2015 Forester.

This actually works really good. My Grand Cherokee has a huge spare well, big enough for a 30" diameter tire. I did pretty much the same thing using a 245/75-16 tire, the biggest I could fit in the well and easily big enough to hold a JL Audio 12w3v3-4. Thumps pretty good even with the spare tire cover in place.
@Zixxyz9 жыл бұрын
My dad did this way back in 2001 with his subaru impreza WRX hatchback but instead of rendering the spare useless he used fiberglass to make a bowl type thing that fit with the full tire (rim and all) and held the sub. me and all my friends thought this was absolutely awesome because it sounded awesome and we still had a spare! sure it took 2 moths but still. sounded awesome and was well worth it.

Dylan 'Robin' Harwood That's terrible logic to buy a tool. Ohh this $30 drill does the same thing as this $100 one. Boys buy cheap tools men buy tools that they can pass down to their boys.
@dylandajhharwood55668 жыл бұрын
John Smith Do you know what price/performace even means? Haha. I'm saying they're the best quality for the price. I could go to my local B&Q and buy a £15 hand drill or I could buy one that costs £150 however maybe the one that costs £80 or £90 is the best for the price, longest battery life, high torque etc. I'm saying buy the one that YOU trust. Okay, sure maybe you've not had the best time with Ryobi. I'm not trying to argue here, I'm just saying MAYBE Ryobi are the best value for them in AUS. Also, they're not mechanics by trade, they don't own a massive workshop and work of cars day in and day out. They are acoustic engineers, as you've heard in this very video. If they were mechanics they'd be using the highest quality tools around, however for their cars they probably don't mind having a slighty sub-par tool.
@travisnapier26938 жыл бұрын
Dylan 'Robin' Harwood I know what price/performance is but here in the states ryobi and black and decker are the crappiest low budget tools they make. The best mid range tools here are rigid.

For fathers day I made my old man one of those with a Mickey Thompson indie series tire (not functional due to sidewall damage). I made it with a 15 inch pyle subwoofer and a 700 watt Bluetooth amp (uses less than half the sub peak), and a 9,800 mah dc battery pack, with a leather back. This cost me around $400 but dude this thing kicks, and its perfect for car shows, I highly recommend it for decent sound quality and extremely mad looks.
@stevefox37637 жыл бұрын
I love all these videos but this is a fact idea, subs need a specific internal volume and shape for there enclosure, this will sound crap compared to how the same sub will sound in a properly built enclosure
@OMGLYKEWOW7 жыл бұрын
Did you even watch the video? They specifically talk about that. The whole idea is to sound decent for cheap

Yes I did, I was just reiterating that it's crucial to have the right size
@OMGLYKEWOW7 жыл бұрын
Cool. I agree with you, I see what they were going for but honestly I'd just spend the money to design/build my own box and not have it look like it's recycled from garbage
@stevefox37637 жыл бұрын
I've always built my own boxes, 99.9% of people buy generic pre made boxes and just stick there sub in and that's it, I build my boxes to the exact internal dimensions and seal them so well that there's absolutely no leakage at all, they are painted inside and all joints are silicone sealed as well as round the sub mateing area too,they are 100% air tight. as you probably know the air acts as a brake in sealed boxes and prevents over excursion at high power levels as well as reducing cone flapping and producing a tighter sound
@OMGLYKEWOW7 жыл бұрын
Does painting the inside actually do anything? I've never done that. I do love sealed boxes though, especially for rock music.

@TwizztidAngel9 жыл бұрын
AugmentedRealities Or they just didn't crank it up so much it turns inside out. You do not have to have have it to move like it's going to blow itself up. Thats not how acoustics work. Not to mention that particular song is not bass focused. I have been installing car audio for years. You do not want a speaker going crazy when you play music. Thats how they wear out fast. Quality of music is not the same as quantity of movement.
@augmentedrealities9 жыл бұрын
yeah maybe they didn't turn it up much. I never said anything about quality. Besides, quality would only show in the video according to the quality of the camera mic so there's no point. Also there's no way that $15 tire setup is going to sound quality, they made this video as a joke. So make that cheap speaker dance. The speaker moving it what it's designed to do, especially low end drivers. If it's a quality speaker and amp it wont ware it out. I've designed and built speaker boxes, crossovers and amps. Still got drivers from the 90's that have had years of hard work. Still going strong as if they're new. Quality speakers can go loud (to a point) if you know what you're doing and use quality equipment.
@TwizztidAngel9 жыл бұрын
I was making a broader statement about the quality, not referring to this video. I also do filming and film editing. I know this all to well. One of my cameras sucks at recording audio. In my experience with installing car audio for music the more you have room for speaker movement (up and down/ in and out) gives it more ability to produce a quality sound. People that want their speakers to jump like jackrabbits when they power them get a far worse quality due to the speaker being closer to its limits.

Using a tire as a box is actually a good idea. The sound deadening the tire provides means you don't need as much air space inside. With good enough sound deadening in a box you can make it much smaller without losing sound quality.

I have built sub enclosures that fit in wheels that way you get both a good spare and sweet sound.
@Hellsong899 жыл бұрын
Just some improvement ideas: Use the cars spare wheels holder system to keep wheel in place, so its harder to steal and does not fly into your head, if you have accident. Use some 2x2 or other wood to make connectors between back plate screws and front plate screws, so tire wont expand via pressure (with bigger and better subs) and also give screws something more than rubber to bite on. Filling the compartment with old pillow fills and lining sides with mattress foam will give your "box" more space if sub needs more space than is available. Use some spare wood and sturdy mesh to give sub room to move under the trunk mattress. Also making hole in mattress helps sub to move air more freely, thought dont let anything sharp fall into cone trough mesh. To be absolutely teenager this also gives you good place to secure your LED lighting so your trunk can be turned a disco! This is kinda old idea to put sub into spare tire, but its still cool and functional.. depending your use of the car.. and if you dont have ever tire puncture! :D

Hey MCMers, another cheap way to help improve the sound quality would be to add hanging basket liners. I've just used some inside some 6x9 speaker boxes and the sound improvement is impressive. Normally these liners sell 40 pence each in the UK, I got them on offer for just 10 pence, bargain

You guys are awesome, up there with Top Gear UK, but you are not making videos quick enough. I tried searching for videos like MCM, but with disappointing results, there are currently no shows that comes close to you guys. Great work

You can do it like Audi: the sub is actually mounted on a real spare wheel (not only in the tire), so you don't loose your spare

My Protege5 came with a sub installed onto the wheel itself. It's not God-tier but it's out of the way and sounds pretty sick.

Suggestion for improvements for the tyre subwoofer: Using some fiberglass with sand/resin mixture to harden it up and damping the unwated resonation inside the tire. And for more room, using a flatter driver or smaller driver could actually sound amazing since there are 8" subs that require next to nothing amount of litres. Just my ramblings.

I remember seeing some guys do this in an old Beetle almost 20 years ago. It's a great idea if you're tight on space.
