I really enjoy this episode. I love all of the episodes where y'all do technical how-tos on anything performance related, especially on cars that I've never seen before. I live in the US near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and obviously I've never seen a Starlet, let alone one with an Evo body kit. Was I the only one that noticed that the car had different types of spark plugs in it? I didn't read all of the other comments but one spark plug was a NGK Iridium and the other was a Bosch Platinum. That MIGHT have an effect on performance. Anyway, great show as usual. I am a huge fan of MCM.

I own a starlet with a TDO4 turbo on it running about 200bhp. surprised me that you guys chose this out of all the turbo cars you could of got. they are nippy beasts though. especially with a TDO4 on.

I'm restoring my 4efte powered Fiat X1/9. I blew the motor about 6 years ago and it's been parked up. I've got the greatest respect for these little motors. They are tough tough tough. Mine peaked at 130 bhp at the rear wheels. Just had Ross forged pistons, 2.5" exhaust (straight thru) and a Microtech ECU. No extraneous paraphernalia as the car is 1979 and doesn't need the pollution bits. It would easily keep pace with WRX STI. In the straight and through the corners.

those gfb controllers are awesome. I had an legacy rs for many years and one of the first mods I did was chuck one of these on. Boost came on so much faster/harder. ended up selling car, took off controller and man what a huge let down the factory controller was, I reckon lost 50hp without it. . ended up putting down 150kw atw with a leaking uppipe with that controller and factory grey injectors.

My mom has this engine, but as a N/A in her Corolla. The 4EFE engine (4EFTE is in this Starlet). One of the best responding engines I've ever tried. My Carina E has the 4AFE (N/A) which is a 1.6, but still a 16 valve, 4 cyl, EFI engine just like the Corolla, but my engine has nothing compared with the Corolla, maybe a bit more torque, but not much more then that. Waiting for the Turbocharger to arrive in the mail in about 3 weeks! :)

If you dont have insurance here, you either just apologize or pay the whole fee out of your own wallet. Usually they will let you off, but it all depends on the driver you crashed into.

Top Tip! That boost control solenoid is a MAC valve p/n 35A-AAA-DDEA-1BA (12.7 watt) which retails for about 30usd and is used for AEM, Autronic, Haltech, etc. Don't overpay kids, and if you want one with less power draw you can get the 5.4 watt model p/n 35A-AAA-DDBA-1BA.

I love these guys. No homo. So informative. I just got an hks evc 5 boost controller and wasn't sure on the entire install. Now I know exactly what to do. Question though....I have an rb25det and I think max is 12 psi and stuff goes bang if you go any higher. How is that little turd holding the same boost that makes mine go bang? Or is my rb25det more capable?

The stock internals or the Rb25det turbos are shit, the ceramic turbines tend to break at more that 12psi and a new ecu might help the factory one will limit boost like the one in that little turd =). Dunno about rb25 stock internals but the engine will be able to handle much more boost safely... how many 1.3 starletts are there drifting round? =)

Remy Brennan I'm working on replacing the stock turbo, but at 10 psi with intake, exhaust, standalone, injectors, and coils my motor puts out 340 hp to the rear wheels. Okay it's actually 337, but I'm rounding up.

Pretty much, although as they explained in the episode, you can still save boost maps after the tune for various styles of driving. In that case, it would actually make more sense to get a boost controller after a tune.

I live in nz, yea any insurance is optional but you pay acc premiums through vehicle registration (like $150 for 6 months registration). Acc is pretty much free accident healthcare so if you crash your car you won't get stuck with medical bills
