If you have a wired connection, you'd have no need whatsoever for any type of antenna.

Couldn't you dissect the original antenna and just put in the can ? It's the same thing ! Then just use a USB extension cord.

I don't know where you live but most electronic parts outlets would have this. Its a fairly common part. Walmart, Best Buy, Computer shops? Not likely. Ebay, Amazon ? Hell yes!

Different antennas have different uses. Im building one of these because they're directional and will let me track down people leaching on WiFi... so i can walk up to 'em and be like "hey, stop being a dink". YOou cant do that with an Omni-directional antenna

The cantenna, if properly made with the right size of can will beat that black stick antenna by about 10dB. It means you can get Wi-Fi from more than twice the distance away and tell which direction it's coming from. It would be fun to have two of them and send between two computers and see how far they can communicate with normal cards and cantennas at both ends.

"SuperEnginerd" Considering 5:40, you are a super something.. But I don't think it's either an engineer or nerd.. Only reason I assume he didn't at least get a nick is because by the looks of it he's starting with a masonry bit, and obviously un-tapped. Thus it takes ages to drill through even with the drill maxed.. Yes, this is how you an make a wireless cantenna, yes it's instruction on how to do so, it's also an instruction to just bad habit and danger in the workshop.

A very big yes! While there are legally imposed limits on the amount of power a transmitter can send to the antenna, there are no limits on how efficient/effective an antenna can be. That being said there may be legal limits on height and location of the antenna.
