As the cylinder spins, you look through the cutouts at the pictures on the other side. This creates the effect of each frame being still for a split second, keeping the pictures from simply blurring together, and you see a rapid succession of images which produces the illusion of motion! Woo

Persistence of vision makes it seem animated. It is a phenomena which makes the human eye retain the last seen image for 1/10th of a second. And during the time it is seeing the old image the new image in that place. You are unable to notice the gaps in between.

Persistence of Vision... If images appear less than 1/10th of a second part, our brain sees them as continuous video stream. Science!!!

You forgot to mention the biggest part. It's because of how our brain perceives motion that we are able to create these illusions.

Also, our eyes see 24 FPS (frames per second), but the zoetrope is spinning fast enough to appear animated because it is spinning at a rate of OVER 24 FPS.

Wow, that would have been bad. Although then he could have worn an eyepatch and look like a pirate. Just sayin :P p.s. yeah, I know the pain caused by the cut to the cornea and other parts of the eye would have been excruciating, I was simply joking about the pirate stuff.

Well, if you are as strong as the guy in the video you do. He spun it so fast the paper flew out of the zoetrope and would have gave him a paper cut in his eye if it wasn't for his safety glasses. All kidding aside, we just want people to practice safe science.

That's not funny Steve. That happened to me after I finished. Also when cutting the little slits in the cardboard...cup thing... Pieces may fly away pretty fast and hit you in the eye. Unfortunately I have experience.
