The key to the Popsicle Chain Reaction comes from potential and kinetic energy. As you weave the popsicle sticks together, you are continually building potential energy. Each popsicle stick is bent over the stick before it and pinned under the stick before that, creating tension in the wood. When you finally have the chain length that you want, you let go and all of the tension and potential energy is released in a chain reaction of kinetic energy!

This works because the energy contained inside the stick bomb is potential energy and when it is let go, the potential energy turns into kinetic energy.

The reaction is caused by the amount of force holding those popsicles together from the one end to your hand and letting go leaving the force nowhere to hang on to thus launching the popsicles in the air... Science!

Just from looking at it, as far as i can tell, since every stick is trying to lift every other stick on a sort of seesaw fashion, if both sides are being held down on the seesaw, all the energy from the recoil when they pop back up to a normal position is what causes them all to pop

"the key is potential energy . . . ' - the KEY is using large craft sticks. This doesn't work with normal, more common regular size craft sticks. They are too small.

Bending the Popsicle sticks stores energy as potential energy. The force of the finger on the leading edge maintains the potential energy, until that force is removed. This converts the potential energy into kinetic energy, and removing the pressure holding the next stick's potential energy, and so on down the line.... Booyah!

There is pressure holding each stick down. Each stick holds the next stick down and so on... When the pressure held on the last one is released, it jumps off. There is therefore no pressure holding the next sticks down, so they jump away, and this repeats over and over until you get to the end of the chain of sticks.

the Popsicle sticks bend when you place them over each other that way. when you release the Popsicle sticks want to snap back to being straight, but they cant because of the other popsicle sticks. this causes the end stick to pop up first, and that allows the next two to pop up, allowing the next to pop up, and so on and so forth... was i correct..? thats just my guess. :P once again, great video spangler!

I think what causes the reaction is at the end of the line, the sticks are bent and they have nothing to keep them bent. They then flip to straight, and that moves them out of the way. Then the next pair of sticks is at the end, and repeat.

Well it is very simple if you go by the " things in motion must stay in motion and thins not in motion can't stay in motion"( kinda forgot the saying a bit I am tiyord) if you were pushing down the sticks the kinetic energy is not in motion so the fact is that if you put a Popsicle stick in the far left and right then took it out it would create a bigger affect on it ( I am not normally this smart).

potential energy is the cause of the reaction....the greater the potential energy as the chain is longer. and when letting go the potential energy stored becomes kinetic energy, which creates the stick bomb to explode...
