Hey guys, I just got my first steel frame bike (a Batavus Challenge) and the paint job is good except for some areas. How can I keep the paint job from flaking and falling off ( particularly around the chainstay area)

Hi, friend!!! Vintage bicycles are precious for the details of craftsmanship they have, not like modern bicycles that are made by a mold and that's where they all come from. Greetings and thanks for leaving your comment ; )

Great job, my 1st bike in 1983 was a Colnago Super build with Campy Super Record all except for the brakes! The color was blue with gold lettering so I put on these gold Mondolo Pro brakes instead! Watching the build brought back a lot of memories, thanks again!

Hey buddy, quick tip. You should not put grease on the square taper axles before pressing on cranks. They are friction fit and the grease can cause the crank to push on too far, cracking open the taper. Good job on the videos, they’re calming to watch.

An absolute beauty of a bicycle. The sheer simplicity compared to today's modern set ups (Delta brakes forgiven) is something I really miss. I think the UCI should ban all technological advances and stick to this set up if they really want a level playing field! lol..I love also that you have kept the integrity of the bike as I hate to see beautiful classic frames with up to date group sets! Actually these brakes are from the Croce D'Aune groupset which was one step below the C-Record. The main differences being the return springs were visible and external to the body at the rear and they were non-height adjustable. Along with the fact I recall they were also about 60% of the price of the Deltas and still expensive at that!

Very nice restoration, I remember those Colnago bicycles here in Panama in the 80s, 90s, there are thousands of road brands and only what was sold were Vitus, Alan, Pinarello, Benotto, Atala, Colnago, Canopus, it was a frame made in Colombia. very good with columbus pipes, entering the year 2000 began to see cannondale treck, giant, thicker tubes and aluminum frames, for me the most beautiful were those of the 80s, 90s.

don't grease the taper on the bottom bracket axle, it allows the crank spider to advance too far, I e you are over tightening without realizing, this will lead to cracks of the cranks in future, just some advice from a professional.

@@dabrestauracion7404 There has been a big debate over whether or not to grease the spindles, but I believe it is okay to do. It helps the crank seat easier if you do. I've also had to destroy a perfectly good crank because it was seized on the spindle. Just use a very light coating on the end to help it slide on and stay removable. Awesome video, awesome bike though.

@@pheltzo Hi friend !!! Thanks for your comment, I think like you, since over the years if there has been no minimum lubrication on the bottom bracket, it costs a lot to remove and may even break the connecting rod when you want to remove it. I played when I was young with my bm, then I had a new crankset with a little grease (I'm talking about 10 years ago, I recently removed them and without any problem) and that's why I always try to lubricate the axles a little. But as they say, each one has their methods, they may like it or not, it is normal to have criticism, nobody is perfect heheh thank you very much for leaving your comment, greetings ; )

Hello master, wouldn't it be better to let the shift cables go through little piece of ptfe tube underneath the bottom bracket. Otherwise they rubbing against the paint and then with some dirt on them going towards the frame metal.. what do you think? I'm very pleased watching your work cheers!

You are absolutely right, after mounting it I realized and immediately loosen the cables and I put cable covers so they did not rub, a greeting and thanks for your comment, I love it. ; )

Beautiful bike, but it needs a pair of Italian tires. Preferably tubulars, but something like a pair of skinwall Veloflex. It’s a bit of a shame having what looks like 15 Euro tires on a bike worth at least 3500 Euros. Also agree with the comment about putting grease on the tapers. Not good. Im also not a fan of the bottle cage but that’s just me being picky :)

The truth that you are right, at that time they were the only covers I had and the craving could. Regarding the grease with the cranks, there are people who say that if others do not, all opinions are good and on the next mountain bike I will not pay attention to you, regarding the bottle cage as I say "to tastes, colors" a greeting and thank you for your constructive comment, it makes me learn more every day, greetings friend ; )

dab restauración yes, in general grease is a good thing on almost everything. In this case there are two problems I’ve learnt. You run the risk of over torquing the crank forcing it to far up the spindle, this would probably be a minor problem. The second problem you might run into is the grease working as a lubricant warping the square of the softer metal, in this case that beautiful Campagnolo crankset rendering it basically useless. That would be such a shame on such a lovely pice of art. Again I really love the bike! I wish I‘ll have the possibility of building one as well one day. :)

Not sure if it's possible on ebay to get campagnolo shamal deep aluminum rims from not sure exactly years. 1980's / 1990's. Would make it even nicer. Money constraints will always be a problem.

I would not put some Campagnolo shamal tires on this bicycle, since they are from the early 90s, even if you are right you would be spectacular. Thank you very much for commenting. Regards my friend ; )

Highly dubious about the black spokes too- did they even exist in 1985? Nope, I don't think so - spokes were always shiny and silver.
