Ha, that WAS a while back!!! They had an excuse back in the year 1626, no modeling software. The only computing device, the lowly slide rule, was brand new then. Today with powerful computers and fluid modeling software, there is no excuse except ineptitude. The VASA museum is awesome!!!

I read about the VASA decades ago. Stability was checked _after completion_ by having everyone run back and forth across the ship. IIRC, the roll was so bad they abruptly stopped that, but as the King was expecting to see his masterpiece sail, they proceeded to set sail anyway, and the ship promptly rolled and capsized within a mile or two!

In 2005, the Enchantment of the Seas was overhauled. Part of overhaul included stretching the vessel by cutting it in two amidship and adding a 73-foot (22 m) long section. Enchantment of the Seas entered dry dock at Keppel Verolme shipyards in Rotterdam on 15 May 2005. The mid-body extension section was built at Aker Finnyards ahead of time, allowing the construction to be done in just over a month.[

I was thinking the same. To my knowledge, VARD Group did not design it, as their contract was for the construction and outfitting only. Wikipedia: "REV Ocean was designed by Espen Øino with an interior by H2 Yacht Design. It was initially intended to be a 140 m superyacht with some research facilities, but during the design process she grew in size and was turned into a research and expedition vessel with a yacht-like exterior and high standards of comfort and design, including a luxury accommodation. Contracts for construction and outfitting were signed in 2017". Espen Øino International is one of the world's leading design studios for large custom motor yachts, according to The Super Yacht Life news.

In some ways, all that technology can make it MORE likely. People assume the computers are right and might forget the fundamentals in ensuring all the inputs are correct, calls are correct, etc. Similar thing happened with a new submarine design a few years ago - too heavy to stay surfaced so had to lengthen it.

@norsenomad
@norsenomad Жыл бұрын
REV Ocean was designed by Espen Øino International, a leading design studio and naval architect for custom superyachts. History worth noting: the design went through considerable changes (from 140 meters hull length to 182.9 meters, from research to research-slash-superyacht, which affects the superstructure design. After construction contract was signed, there was a construction pause in 2021. There will be a top deck delete, hull widening, amidship extension giving new total length of 195 meters and 32% increase in fuel capacity. Custom design, for sure...). And VARD Group (the two shipyards) won the contract on construction of the ship in 2017, according to Wikipedia.

Why are they doing this? The prices maybe ships become "not sold" and a new company will appear to go back to market prices, if "cutting in half makes selling price of 2 ships of a-new-normal price". Stability should be just a reason to do this "cutting into half". At 3mins showed as already cut. Must be a price experiment then regret? Unless at least getting both ships at 1 ship's price(before cut).
