Right now, that was what I could use that could withstand that temperature. But since then I have managed to buy 3 bricks from which I can carve melting jars and molds.

That is not a cupel. That is a ceramic crucible. He should have used borax to glaze the crucible, but otherwise it should work fine. A cupel is made of Portland cement or bone ash. This is definitely ceramic. I use those all of the time when melting with a torch. And use a cupel to oxidize off lead when assaying material.
