This lesson is way deeper than it looks like on the surface. You get to a different level of freedom on the piano. He's just presenting you the way you practice block chords, and play melodies with two-handed chord voicings. It takes a lot of practice, but it changes the game for your musicality

I feel it's extremely important to understand the scalar relationship between 6th chords and diminished chords, i.e., the Barry Harris 6th-diminished scale. The sixth voicings sound great, but combining them with related diminished voicings allows the player to create movable chords to harmonize a melody or improvised line. Those movable chords are the heart of the bebop sound.

What a great exercise. I have been doing the minor sixth with an added ninth for a five note voicing using all fingers of one hand chromatically. Your facility with arpeggiating the voicing has opened up my mind. Extending this to maj 6 also sometimes with added 9th has been great. Thank you.

Asked you the question about being "playful" a few weeks ago, reflected on your answer and decided to take a break from courses or information or "learning", and just spend some time with my instrument, earn that feeling of comfort and ease at the keys. This is my first lesson back, and I feel so refreshed! Thanks for all yall do! I also spent some time messing about in other genres, I sometimes forget how simple music can, and should, be!

I’m a bit startled, because I created this same workout a while back for myself…this has been happening more and more over the last few years. It’s like people have access to my music journal ha! I assume this is happening to a lot of autodidacts. Same thing happened when i first heard B.Harris talk about it .. somehow i already knew the dim 6 scale etc.. seems most jazz heads in undergrad knew it, but maybe it came from Harris decades earlier IDK.. Anyway, music has it’s own logic that can be discovered, and it’s a joy to do so on one’s own

i was working 6th diminished in C literally just the other day and went through all of these on my own lol. i went contrary the scale and stayed on the C scale as i walked it down. came up with some insanely interesting chords doing it. i didnt do the minors but i def walked down the bass notes the same. my imagination 100% leading me the right direction. thanks for this. edit: im doing these exercises for the next week for sure.

Really useful tutorial, I was only taught about the first inversion and was never explained about what was going on. Since you have been exlpaining nicely a lot of Barry Harris' concepts, would it be possible to have a workshop about how we could use his chromatic scale?

HA HA on me! When I was a 'young' jazz guy, I thought the 6th chord sounded "square" as we used to say WRONG! It's a totally important addition to jazz harmony. The triad is to European classical music as the 6th chord is to American jazz!

I didn't quite understand the reason why we use B instead of B flat if we're using D min. D min is basically F maj with a lowered third, isn't it :D Anyone has an idea?
@chasemcclendon9659
@chasemcclendon9659 2 жыл бұрын
In jazz notation the "6" in a min6 chord is taken from the major scale of the root note. Also another explanation could be that-not sure if this is totally right-often the dorian scale is used for the ii chord. The 6th scale degree is the same between the dorian scale and the major scale

I wish guitars were more like pianos. Piano can get all those closed voicings that guitar can't always do. Some guys go so far as to tune the guitar to allow for that but thats a whole other thing....
@russelldougherty3054
@russelldougherty3054 2 жыл бұрын
Most of the "drop" voicings do work well on guitar. Take a closed voicing from piano (or just sheet music if you don't have a piano) drop the appropriate note and "build" it on guitar. You'll sound pretty hip. :) I always wished piano was more like guitar where there aren't white vs. black keys, but that's a whole different thing.
