Thank you for giving ALL the details! Like the size of wood, type of screws, etc. It was hard to find that info on other DIY mailbox KZbin videos. This one was the best by far for a beginner like myself! :)

Thank you and thank you. I designed and built it myself. Took me 18 months working everyday plus holding down a full-time job. If I could have more time and energy, I would like to finish some landscaping project and build a wrap around deck.

@@diymyestateyou built by yourself? Like, just you? Concrete, roofing, electrical plumbing and hvac? Or did you have the foundation poured and you just did the framing? Amazing either way, just curious as to exactly how much you did by yourself.

I watched about 30 videos and this is one of the best. You used basic tools and made a high quality professional post! And you cover very many important points. Thanks for the video!

Nice. Did you know that a mailbox is supposed to be a specific height. I looked it up and it is supposed to be 41 to 45 from road surface and 6 to 8 inches from road / curb. Not sure if you mentioned that. Great detail on your post.

Very nice job. I learned some great tips: ice & water shield is a great idea and the flashing to protect from weed whackers. One question: why didn't you run the ice & water shield all the way to the bottom of the post and under the post? It looks like you left about 4-6" of exposed 4x4.

From all of the information I viewed and watched on-line it appears decay of the post happens within the first 8 inches starting from the top of the soil line. It appears that micro-organisms will attack and decay this area of the post. I also thought if I keep the bottom open it would allow any trapped water to escape towards the bottom, this is why I didn't wrap the bottom and laid stone in the bottom of my post hole. So far, the post looks as good as the day I installed it. Hopefully this helps to answer your question, thank you for your comments and for watching.

Make sure to check with your post office before using concrete. It's a liability in my state. Our mail boxes must be able to break away easily if someone crashes into them. If it doesn't and someone is hurt or killed from it, the land owner could be held liable. There are several rules that vary, from height to box, distance from curb or shoulder, size and type of mounting post, decorative stones and even pull off drainage. I just found out when a letter and rules were left in my mail box, highlighting the height to be 42-45 inches to box. It's been 27" for years and was that way when we moved in, so I had to fix it.
