Omg!! I can’t wait to do this! I’ve been disgusted with my mailbox for months now 🔨 also I’ve never used a “planer” before but I like how smooth it gets the wood. Will fine sanding do the same thing?

The player saved a lot of time sanding and gets the planks set at an even thickness. Depending on how consistent and clean you want the side panels, you can skip the planer.

Great job and I am doing something similar but I want to add a 6x6 solar light on the flat area behind the box. That area is bigger than a 6x6 because I made my post wider. I just think a wider post looks better with a wider mailbox. Anyways I am concerned with there being a lot of flat area on top around where the solar light will set, and concerned about water being able to stand on that area causing it to weather faster. I know the wood will be sealed with outdoor Kilz and then painted over that with an oil based black satin outdoor paint but just feel like it may rot faster if water sits on it alot. What are your thoughts on this please? How is the top of yours holding up so far? Thanks and again.....great job. Looks really nice.

How long does this last since it’s wood will it eventually get worn out?

By using pressure treated posts and redwood fencing for the sides, these can last a couple decades or similar to the life of a wood fence. The siding you see here is also protected by the tung oil I applied, which can be reapplied at any time to protect the wood. All of the pieces that are visible can also be easily removed and replaced by simply unscrewing them and screwing in new boards. This could be an option even if you just decided to change the color/look of the mailbox post. Thanks for watching and I hope it helped!
