Hi Mark. Wharram Catamarans. Brilliant. Can't go wrong. Disclaimer, I don't own one. I don't work for anyone who builds them. I just read and research. It's a pity that you weren't able to purchase a copy of James book. "Two Girls, Two Catamarans." Which tells about that first voyage in his earlier model. And here in the 21st century, you can check out "Sailing Lucky Fish " and their channel. L.F is a Tiki 38....Also there's an episode where he's given instructions on lashing etc. I think in St Helena Island.? There is a wealth of information about Wharrams available online, but getting information directly from Hanneke Boon Wharram herself, priceless mate. Looking forward to further discussions/episodes that you may be having. Btw, on the Tiki 38, you can probably get away with 2 crew. But for watch keeping, maybe three. So it looks like I'm going to need to restock my beer fridge. Just in case you find your way down here to Nz.?? Take care mate and all the very best. Cheers.

Hi Mark, just watched your video with Hannak, what a nice lady. You're on the right track if you want a boat you can maintain and repair yourself rather than spend weeks waiting for expensive parts to arrive in places without cities. I went to see Woodwind the Nari mk4 two months ago, she is sound and has never had any rot. The Austrian guy selling her has owned her for twenty years and he bought her from a friend who was the second owner. I would have bought her but my partner who isn't as yet a cruiser said she would make various changes than meant this wasn't the right boat for us. Good luck in your search, the right boat is the one that gets you out there.

Mark, Before you rush off and buy a Wharram, have a look at Wharrams for sale in South africa. One in Richard's Bay, one in Knysna and another down in the Cape. They are in your price range and two of the three are ready to sail. Do your currency conversion and you will be pleasantly surprised at the current exchange rate.

I think you should seriously consider a good Blue Water small Cruiser in the 28 to 33 ft range. Full Keel Barn Door Rudder no Keel bolts to worry about. Keep it simple. Less stuff to break. Much more forgiving if you're a single-hander than a catamaran. If you enough sea room in a boat like that you can heave to and relax in really nasty weather. That's not an option on a catamaran they have to be tended to carefully because it can go bad very quickly if they're not handled right. Buy a small boats that's ready to go and go sailing. I have been a big fan of Wharram cats since reading his seminal article, "The Offshore Catamaran Principle". You are young. If you do decide to build, Hanneke's drawings and instructions are beautiful. Wharram plans are more like a boat building course than the sketches you get from other designers.

It's more like a philosophy You need to dive in than a simple boat building instructional lesson when it comes to understanding James Wharram and his idea of being out there which led to his designs. "Two girls two catamarans" might be the purest view on his way approaching the task to overcome a body of water.

This is a pretty special episode Mark. Hanneke is a mine of information on Wharrams and such a lovely lady with it. I wonder if all that knowledge will live on, she knows so much and clearly recognises many boats and their history. I would say watching this a Wharram is top of your list, I can see the love you have for these boats. It would be a good idea to try and get a sail on one to test them out and see if reality matches the dream. Best of luck in Costa Rica. Nice to see Hanneke again. I went to a couple of talks in Devoran village hall when James and Ruth were still alive. They were extremely interesting. Can't remember if I mentioned it but I saw you driving through Truro on the Sunday morning. That was a particularly good video even by your standards. I've always liked Wharram cats. Someone said that with a Wharram you don't just buy a boat, you buy a philosophy. I think that's very true. Rory McDougall's trip was amazing.

Absolutely wonderful video Mark. Hanneke was so inviting and appears to be a lovely person to know. It reminded me so much of myself some 25 odd years ago travelling down to see a Wharram in the flesh and meet with James to go over the designs and the build process. James was so inviting, not at all pushy and happily gave his time to a young guy with a dream. In the end I wasn't able to commit to the project at that time but the itch is still there pecking away.

Had a friend who owned a Wharram, great boat. However at best you’re only ever going to be camping aboard one of these. Go for a boat that’s going to be a comfortable cruising home with all of the amenities. Finish off a boat that’s readily available and spend your time sailing and not in a boat yard working on a full build. Trust me, I’ve been there and done that…(:

I'm building an aeroplane and plan to fly it around the world. It's a long project but when done and I'm flying it, the feeling of traveling the world in something I have built with my own hands will be better than had I restored something built by someone else. I'll also know it inside out, every nut and bolt and exactly how to carry out any repairs. Build your dream boat while you're young. Just make sure you have a comfortable warm/cool workshop to do it in.

Another great episode. I owned a Tiki 21 which was beautifully built in the channel Islands. The chap who built mine went on to build a 31 then a 26 - if either of those two boats came up, it would take alot to stop me from buying them. Amazing boats!

In South Africa there is a Wharram Pahi 42 (32 000 euros) and a Wharram Pahi 31 (24 000 euros) for sale at the moment. Also if you planning on moving somewhere to build a boat, South Africa is a good choice, the climate is good and access to materials and labour is good. There is a reason most of the catamarans in the world are built here.

SA can be disastrous to build a boat - especially in the Cape Town region where quality wine is way cheaper than fuel. I was there in 1992 and met some farm workers who had actually not been sober for decades, wine rations are part of their wages!

@@julianbatcheler9970 Maybe in numbers, I meant more the "Brands". Its hard to find numbers, but all the Leopard, Knysna, Balance, HopYacht, Kinetic, island spirit/fortuna, Jaguar and Gunboats (they were french but built in SA) were built there. And I often see 1 off hulls that were built there, some nice carbon ones too. I think it has a lot to do with being able to work with epoxies, resins and polymers 12 months of the year and the "relaxed" regulations with labour laws and pollution and a lot of the materials needed are manufactured in SA. I even know of people building catamarans in other countries that import a lot of their fiberglass from south africa because its generally better quality. Also the bulkheads don't break and the fronts don't fall off.

@@RachaelSA I thought it was pretty much accepted France is the epicenter of leisure craft building in the world. French cat brands: Bali Fountain Pajot Lagoon Privilege Catana Excess Allure Garcia Windelo Dufour RM Nautitech Pogo Gunboat… was an American company they were originally made in South Africa & China… their next model was built in North Carolina. They went bankrupt seven or eight years ago and were reestablished and are now French owned and made in France. As to breaking. Yes Lagoon have had some issues and I would buy a Leopard over most cats… BUT the Privilege cats are built to survive the apocalypse and have kevlar reinforcements in critical places. BUT BUT If cash was no object I’d have a Kraken monohull over any cat.

Hi, also, do not let a immaculate shiny smooth boat draw you in to thinking,it must be well built. Check out parlay revival. For example check for cracks between the hulls. I hope this will help. Two kids, a couple of moves later and I still haven't finished that dinghy! I relate to what Hanneke was saying that 1/3 of the time is handing and finishing. With the said, I think it might be better to buy a 2nd hand Wharram, get to know it, get to know it's construction, repair it, then later in life, if you still have the desire to build one, do it, but only after you've spent plenty of time sailing one first.

I remember finding James Wharram's first book on my fathers's bookshelf when I was a kid and have wanted one ever since. He had 2 cats subsequently (not Wharrams). By far and away the best video you've ever done. Admittedly I might be a little biased as this one came from right on my home turf. Mark I watched you carefully in this one. You were positively shining mate. Your full personality came out in this video in leaps and bounds. This is obviously where your heart is at. This is your dream. The Wharram's are out of the South Pacific. Something to consider in northern climes. Since you are a multihull fan, consider a Heavenly Twins 26, several on sale locally in Yachtworld, reportedly seaworthy and inexpensive. For ocean sailing and similar price, I would like something like an Alberg 37 or similar British boat. A Wharram in aluminum would be interesting. Larry Pardey: go small, simple, now. The wharram ive most liked is Vasco Pajama ... Search on here and the net for a beautifully kitted out wharram .. also the Pahis with their curved up bows for added buoyancy in rough seas. I hope to watch this more fully in a few days but while you were down there it would have been great to visit the Rapier yard just over and up the river from Plymouth .

Don't be afraid of building new. Contrast that with a boat you buy but has suspect areas. The skill (and cost) to retrofit a hull/deck/structural area is actually much higher than the skill and effort to build anew. Nice video!

I've been watching The O'kellyes KZbin channel as they travel from country to country looking for their new Catamaran and there is a lot of disappointment with the sellers, the brokers, the condition of the boats not matching up with the pictures etc... It's just part of the buying process but still frustrating to watch for us but very expensive and super frustrating for them. I hope you strike gold on your first international shopping trip!!

Hey Mark, I've been enjoying all the posts, very well presented and interesting. My friend and I ended up repairing the wooden mast on my Feltz Skoprpion next to "spirit of Gaia" in Messolongi around 2015. Absolutely stunning boat and we would have loved to have had a look on board. Good luck in Costa Rica looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Mark theres a process developed for converting soft woods and plys into a material 5times stronger than hardwoods.. as strong as steel and harder... Its very springy.. Its done using two alkalis and a lot of pressure . Its also very rot resistant.. so its stronger than carbon fiber.

I built a Wharram HINA way back in the late 60’s. Even at 22ft long you’ve got to be committed 100 percent to finish the job, they require lots of hard work. Better to find a well built Tehini or similar and go voyaging.
