Good, straightforward video - thank you for making it (all your vids too!). I love the Velcro as tape - ingenious!

Thanks for the tip that "K Type" meant "Kenwood Type" at dinner the other day. I took the radio-side of the SCU-42 adapter that came with the Yaeso radio and paired it with a torn-apart CT-44 (which wasn't the right adapter), and made a Frankensteinish adapter that allows the aviation radio to work with the MicroAvionics PM-100.

Nice build. It is pretty easy to pull off those gel cups and route the wire behind (just need a small channel with Dremel).

@@ParamotorJunkie I built several of these helmets for use as student loaners, so I did not install the ptt button for simplicity's sake. But they do work fine with the ptt button if you want to use it on your build. I would plug it in and run it down a sleeve to your hand so you can press it while flying

I ordered the screw hardware kit you suggested, and it came with the nuts and washers needed, but the bolts were only 20mm long, not 25mm or more.

Nice vid! Is this the same setup you use to communicate with aircraft?
@AveryFlies
@AveryFlies Жыл бұрын
This is a super simple helmet, mostly for paramotor school and talking with other paramotors. If you wanted aircraft to hear you, you'd want an aviation band radio. (AM, not FM) but with adapters this could hook up to one of those as well

Here's a video I did with parts needed to integrate an aviation band and 2-way FM radio into your helmet: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mp2Vgn2pltKhbbM

Thank you! I have heard you communicating with aircraft in your videos. I have been trying but there is too much noise interference on my current setup. I will watch your other video as well. Thanks again.

How to make the aviation radio work with this?
@AveryFlies
@AveryFlies 4 ай бұрын
The cheapest way would be a second wired headset specifically for that radio type. The more expensive way would be a Bluetooth system

Do you need the earcups at all? You said -31dB. I found some article saying the "Dobuds ONE" are great, under $50 and they claim -30dB active noise cancelling. Why use the cups at all?
@AveryFlies
@AveryFlies Жыл бұрын
I guess you don't, earplugs or quality noise canceling headphones can also be effective. The ear cups do double as a side-of-the-face protection and keep my ears warm in colder conditions though!

In the air, the higher powered UV 8 series doesn't get you any more range than the uv5. And technically I believe you need a ham radio license for the high-powered stuff. It was just a cost-saving measure because I didn't need the extra wattage. Also, I picked mine up on Amazon. If you're not keen to wait the uv5 was about $25 if I remembered correctly
@AveryFlies
@AveryFlies Жыл бұрын
So once you have no obstructions, according to my ham radio friend, 1 watt will reach to the horizon. If you're talking from the ground, more power will get more range around obstructions, but there are none in the sky. Antenna and power upgrades might help with low flying, but at that point I've never needed more power with the UV-5rs I use. If you want the latest and greatest though, that uv-82 definitely is an upgrade. Also, the UV82 is an FM 2-way radio. Aircraft radios are AM. This will not talk to air traffic control towers. I think you can dive into the programming and listen to am though, not sure, I'm no radio pro. You need a dedicated airband radio to talk back though, something like an Icom IC-A16.

Not sure on how to add a mic to earbuds. That's why the sena setup rocks, it comes with the mic and everything as it's meant to mount to a motorcycle helmet. I've asked my ham radio friend to check it out, but I can't confirm or deny that your radio in question does airband, which is VHF AM 108-137 mHz.
@AveryFlies
@AveryFlies Жыл бұрын
Actually, just looking at the radio you mentioned, it can receive AM VHF, but it does not list transmitting capabilities on AM. You'll need both to talk to towers and airplanes, not just listen.

I think the funny parts of your videos are great. But not to say that you're videos are a joke, it was a cool build. I once tried to add a mic and headphones, I couldn't hear anything and there was no one to talk to anyway. I might attempt again if I get access to the Eagle County Regional Airport

@AveryFlies

Airband (AM aircraft radios) yes, but as it's explained to me the baofeng FM 2-way radio has 3 caveats: too high transmission power, removable antenna, and precision tunable frequencies. A license is only needed to transmit though, you can use it to receive legally with no license. FRS or GMRS licences are needed depending on frequencies.
@rule1dontgosplat
@rule1dontgosplat Жыл бұрын
baofeng uc-5r doesn’t transmit on the aviation band. If you’re using the amateur radio frequencies you need a technician license or better… anyone can use FRS but if you’re on the GMRS frequencies you have to pass a test as well.
@lunatech9516
@lunatech9516 Жыл бұрын
@@rule1dontgosplat you don't have to pass a test for GMRS, just buy the license for $35 (that what it cost when I got mine). I also hold a general ham license btw.
@rule1dontgosplat
@rule1dontgosplat Жыл бұрын
@@lunatech9516 Oh nice... I knew there was something about the GMRS license. I remember having one of those little family walkie talkies years ago. They said if you used the lower half of the channels, that was FRS and it was available to anyone, but to use the upper half, it used more power and you needed a license. I didn't know you just paid a fee. Interesting.
