Miles Davis was a musical freak. He created a lot of music for a human being. I also love his less known albums like Facets, Miles in the Sky, Filles de Kilimanjaro, A Day in Paris, Prelude, Aura, Early Miles, Get up with it, A Tribute to Jackson? and his live concerts in Stockholm, Osaka, Calypso Frelimo and his album with Milt Jackson. Enriches my life for sure.

Well documented, brief explanations, compelling and interesting. Miles is the bigger star in Jazz in the 50's and 60's,and as Spanish, I will never forget my friend Enrique, who lived in those days the arrival of the Quintet, and showed me "Kind of blue" for the first time. One of those moments that I will never forget. Thank you sir.

The way Miles approach music in general is quite uniqe. It´s a world of it´s own. His blue lyrical tone, the feel and the journey through the topographics. Every tune he´s playing amazes me in one way or another. It´s impossible to describe his music in just a few words. I love that guy.

Miles has been a hero of mine since I have been in high school if I could take only two of his records to the proverbial desert island they would be Miles Ahead and Miles Smiles. The first for the sheer beauty of the music and the second for sheer burning swing.

Great video, Ken. I agree, Davis’ 80’s stuff isn’t his best, but Tutu” was my first Miles record I bought as a kid. Sure, the album is dated with the synthesizers and drum machines, but Davis’ melodies are fantastic on that record!!! Title track, “Tomaas,” and “Portia” are my favorites. It was a double Grammy winner in 1986.

Classical musician here with an obsession for Miles Davis. Please know Concierto de Aranjuez is by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. And Porgy & Bess is the great American opera by George Gershwin. Sketches of Spain also has excerpts from El Amor Brujo which is an amazing work by Manuel de Falla - but the guitar concerto is by Rodrigo. Miles knew the significance of symphonic music and opera and how they played into his own artistry. It’s important for us not to forget these amazing composers especially if we are loving Sketches of Spain. Respectfully the composers are far more important than the recording logistics - which I love too, but with Gershwin, de Falla, and Rodrigo, some of Miles’ greatest recordings would not exist. Respectfully.

@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input, but to say " with[out] Gershwin, de Falla, and Rodrigo some of Miles greatest recordings would not exist " is ridiculous. Miles changed his style myriad times, the Evans discs which Spain is part of, are but one facet of his genius. But thanks for the composer info.
@allanrscott1130
@allanrscott1130 2 жыл бұрын
Thats why i said “some.” To me, Kind of Blue of course is like heaven, but as a classical musician, I love the influence of Gershwin, de Falla, and Rodrigo. Even Miles said his music (like most jazz) would not exist without Debussy, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, and others. While Miles did not see himself as a symphonic musician, his time at Juilliard was important albeit brief. Miles even credits Alban Berg!! Both Miles and Coltrane’s music are heavily influenced and shaped by Stravinsky especially. Miles and Coltrane both acknowledged this. Either way Miles is on par with Mozart especially. The improvisation and willingness to never settle for status quo.

@@allanrscott1130 That's fascinating. Perhaps that explains something I've always speculated on. Beginning with the second great quintet thru Bitches Brew and even Water Babies,. maybe Miles' surreal, nightmarish, abstract vibe came from the classical composers you mention. Even Lift to the Scaffold. What do you think?
@allanrscott1130
@allanrscott1130 2 жыл бұрын
@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 Indeed. March to the Scaffold is from Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. Miles and most of the great jazz composers all knew that most of the 20th century music is a direct influence from composers, especially Stravinsky’s epic Rite of Spring (1913). There are many writings on this subject, thousands actually about the impact of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, but also about how Miles and Coltrane are directly influenced throughout their career and evolutions by their harmonic language of Stravinsky and others. Even when Miles wasn’t quoting these composers directly (Aranjuez, Amor Bruno, and Porgy & Bess), his harmonies and use of sound is directly and indirectly due to Stravinsky, Debussy, Berg, Prokofiev, - all living during Miles’ lifetime, except Debussy who died a few decades earlier. There is even a recent NPR discussion about the influence of these composers on the jazz legends. Bottom line - these composers changed the course of music, and other greats like Miles to the Beatles to Sondheim all knew it and acknowledged it. Nothing is created in a vacuum.
@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455

@@allanrscott1130 Miles, I can hear in his use of atmospheres taken from classical, if not his literal playing, which is bop and standards based, and his own unique personality. Much of the atmosphere Miles explored was his own psyche. And his more aggressive LPs, Agartha, Live Evil, Pangea, etc are rock influenced. But Trane? Seems far less influenced by classical, a musician fully on his own path, especially after A Love Supreme, and his following Impulse records. His free records sound like nothing else, not classical. Wayne Shorter clearly shows the Debussy, Ravel influence I think. Nothing is created in a vacuum, but classical is an influence on select jazz players but not all. And then only certain points in their careers. But without the subtleties of classical, Shorter and Miles wouldn't have created some of the best music. Bird praised Horowitz I believe.

Most vintage amps have a mono switch. Works fine for me. I nearly bought an expensive mono cartridge/stylus but stumbled upon a topic on the Steve Hoffman forum during research. Check that first. @@mymixture965 would love to hear about it! I know it can sound amazingly good as I heard some mono albums at a record store some time ago. Perfectly working Thorens with an expensive cartridge over vintage JBL monitor speakers. Very impressive I must say. I nearly bought a €450 cartridge from them. After some research I figured that this cartridge was not genuine mono but a modified stereo one. After a log talk with a renowned dealer overhere I was told that several so called mono cartridges were actually modified stereo cartridges. I decided not to buy one and use the mono button om my amps. For me it's fine this way. I don't have an extensive mono collection either so that's another reason. Would like to hear you're experience sometime. Thanks for the reply!

Great collection Ken. Although I love the rapid fire approach performed by other jazz trumpeters like Booker Little, Clifford Brown, etc., Miles' approach to giving space in his performances even in up tempo grooves is much preferred by me, especially ballads. Miles could rip too whenever he wanted but that was not his thing. However I didn't care much for some of the early 70's fusion stuff. Happy New Year
