My dad, Bob Hammer, was the musical director and did the arrangements on I Just Dropped by to Say Hello and The Voice That Is. It was really cool that you opened up the gate fold so I could see his picture in the album. Dad also wrote liner notes and did arrangements for lots of Impulse records. Thanks!

Hey Ken great video, I do love Alfie! That sonny was reissued along with Oliver’s blues and the abstract truth (acoustic sound series) they sound really nice. Several more impulse titles to come :) including duke and trane one of my favorites.

Ken awesome impulse choice that Coltrane is so underrated especially the track Out of this world it blows me away every time . Sonny on a impulse is smokin especially the collaboration with Mickey Roker. And when you talk Impulse you always have to include a McCoy Tyner his impulse contribution is over the top stunning Ken loved it brother. Lovellandrew

Nice selection. Hard to pick ten albums from such a essential label. S. Manne, E. Jones, Ch. Mingus, Ch. Hamilton, A. Shepp - I wish I could alive 200 years to listen so important and amazing music from Impulse. You did surprise me with the Shirley, I have to check this album. Rollins on Impulse I did buy from 2019 Verve Vital Vinyl Reissue for 19 euro. For that money easy to love, even cut from digital source. So if records are vinyls then cars are… steels, houses are woods, you are … crap? Pathetic that grammar and articulation scare you. No one, kiddies, calls them that unless you faux hipsters try way too hard. 16 am I, hahah you’re wrong all over the place. Now go to sleep and lay down on your batting and springs. No doubt you’re wise enough to know clever when it pummels you.

That "Sonny Rollins on Impulse" LP was part of the recent "impulse 60" by Acoustic Sounds. Mastered from the original analog tapes by Ryan Smith. Surprisingly, there are a number of NM copies available for cheap. You can probably still find new copies too. Also, that Oliver Nelson LP has recently been released (from OG tapes) and that is a definite "must have". Thanks for another excellent video Ken. "Thanks and have a great day!"

@bklynbass3 жыл бұрын
Yes, and it was Creed Taylor who signed Coltrane to Impulse, contrary to popular opinion. And he produced the first 9 impulse albums including Coltrane’s first record for the label, Africa/Brass. But Thiel still deserves massive credit for allowing Impulse to develop into such an artistically significant label after Taylor left to go to Verve. And back in the 50s also signed Buddy Holly(!)

I really love “Stolen Moments” . Analogue Productions just did an Impulse Series earlier this year. Blues and the Abstract Truth as well as a few others in this Impulse list were part of the series so some of them are even currently in print! Lastly, you really seem to love Out of the Afternoon as you have mentioned it in multiple videos. Maybe I haven’t listened closely enough yet to dig it as much as you do.
