Hi, awesome project, I was hoping to do the same! You mentioned you used an Ultrafine 5K display. Aren't they still a lot more expensive than an outdated iMac. Doesn't that defeat the cost-effective purpose a bit? Or is there a way to get your hands on the panel only for a low price? Also, if it was an Ultrafine 5K display to begin with, why take it apart to then connect it to a plywood board instead of just using the monitor? Thanks in advance!

Hey! Thanks for the kind words. About the panel, I bought it from Aliexpress so it was much cheaper than buying an old LG Ultrafine Monitor. I have the links in the description for the parts I bought (panel and driver board).

So the LG 5K Ultrafine has a known issue with their control boards dying - which was handed over to me to 'revive' - I'm wondering if it's worth trying to resuscitate a dead one with this v4 board mod (and taking it out of the chassis)? Hmmm.
@james.a15 күн бұрын
Would probably work but the board is different size with different ports so it wouldn’t fit perfectly without modifications to the display enclosure. On the plus side though it would add HDMI and and DisplayPort in addition to having Thunderbolt.

Thanks! I know there are better ones available but you can modify the Keychron to be pretty good with new switches and some internal sound dampening.

I want to make a 24in 240hz oled monitor any idea how that journey starts?
@james.a7 ай бұрын
First, I’d look for an existing monitor with those specs. Then search only for info about the panel that monitor uses. If you can get the model number of the panel try and find it on Aliexpress. If they sell the panel there then they probably also sell a driver board that works with it. Order both parts and you should have a working monitor. Then you just need to build an enclosure to hold it all together. My first one was literally just screwed to a piece of plywood and worked fine like that until I decided to build a better one for fun. Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

@james.a I have an old thunderbolt display already. But I use pc so im looking for a way to use it without upgrading the display.
@james.a7 ай бұрын
Is yours the model A1407 Thunderbolt Display? If so, there are driver boards available that, if swapped in, would give you an HDMI port but it wouldn’t be a simple drop in replacement to get it to fit inside the enclosure. This board for example would work on that display: www.aliexpress.us/item/3256802367606863.html And then I’d follow this guide to take it apart: www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple+Thunderbolt+Display+Teardown/6525 You’ll definitely want to get a couple of those suction cups to pull the glass off. It’s only being held on by magnets and it's not easy without the suction cups.
@jakehuntoon38487 ай бұрын
@james.a yes sir A1407 not super concerned with the work involved. Just want to be able to connect it to my pc via hdmi. Your project is pretty sweet but it out scales the budget for my needs.

Have you tried overclocking the monitor in windows/macOS to see if it would push 5k 120hz or 4k 144hz? via DP 1.4/USB C or even HDMI? Would love to know as I am interested in doing a 5K DIY.
@james.a Жыл бұрын
I didn’t even know that was possible. Where do I start if I want to figure out how to even do that or test it?
@tsunammie Жыл бұрын
@@james.a Not too familiar on how to overclock it via macOS. But for Windows 10/11 right click and go to Nvidia Control Panel>Change Resolution>Customize Then type in the Resolution and Refresh rate you want to test out, etc 3840x2160 100/120/144hz etc, test it out slowly. Test each resolution and refreshrate 1 by 1 slowly to see how it handles. Same thing with 5K Resolution go slowly 100/120hz etc. The screen may flash and go blank for a few seconds after enabling the new resolution and refreshrate. If the screen goes blank for a second time and reverts to default refresh rate and settings, then that just means your last tested resolution/refreshrate isn't supported. Hope this link helps. kzbin.infoCxSH_NaWjJ8 Let me know how it goes! Cheers, Lam

Thanks for the info! I also have a Win10 PC connected to the display using an Nvidia GTX 1080. By default it's able to do full 5120x2880 @ 60Hz through Display Port cable. When trying to go to 5K @ 100Hz the test fails. Tested making other custom resolution in the Nvidia Control Panel and so far it seems to work fine with these settings: 1. 3840x2160 @ 100Hz 2. 3840x2160 @ 120Hz 3. 3840x2160 @ 144Hz For some reason when I try to create more custom resolutions it doesn't save them even though it says the test was ok. It seems to switch to 2k @ 144Hz but the resolution dropdown doesn't include that option in the custom section like it did with the 4k custom resolutions.
@tsunammie Жыл бұрын
Seems like 4K 120+ works out of the box, 5K 100hz + may require a stronger displayport cable. If you're unable to push anything over 60hz is my assumption. I also think if you wanted to game do so at 4K or 1440p 144hz. I think 5K will work at 120hz if you have the right cable, however if new cable ends up failing, then I would suggest sticking to 1440p 144hz + for gaming as 1440p is half of 5K. Which is a resolution most people prefer to game on. So in my conclusion I think this DIY 5K is amazing if you can pull off 4K 144hz out of the box that just means you can hook up your console and game on the monitor at high refreshrate without needing a 4K 120hz tv or even a seperate gaming monitor. @james.a Hope that helps and let me know how it goes.

I may have found a solution for overclockign monitors on macOS, running custom resolution and refreshrate. But have not tried or tested, the apps you could try taking a look at that's similar to what Nvidia Control Panel does is. BetterDisplay and DisplayBuddy, not all too familiar but it looks like a solution, you could try using for overclocking. Hope that helps and let me know if it was possible to run 4K/5K at 120hz, via macOS.
