For squaring off walls before standing them up carpenters measure diagonally from corner to corner and adjust until you get the same dimension. Thanks for the video!

Good idea...... I'm building a "Steampunk" camper for my pickup and wanted to make a carrier for the back like this one..... EXCEPT, I'll be using black gas pipe with fittings..... the plywood base will be painted rust under black, with the black worn away in spots with a wire brush. The surround will be two levels of black pipe, and that tie down/decoration that you showed at the end will be a great accent for it. Thanks for the info on building this..... it's very helpful......

Nice job, great video. Any thoughts on adding a hinged fold-away ramp on the passenger side? I need something suitable for wheeling up and transporting a couple of 21" wide lawnmowers end to end. Doesn't have to be pretty, just functional. Thanks in advance.

Awesome tutorial, been combing YT and this is one of the best options I've seen to start my camping life without buying a trailer. Here's an idea, then I have a question??? Why not attach a working brake light on the end of the square rod??? My question, would it be too much more money to just use a bunch of 24ish inch c channels inside and keep an open base to tie down things to? Would it be a big difference in weight also???

The break light would work ok and I had contemplated doing it. The height of the hitch would make a difference of how well seen it would be. They do have trailer hitch insert lights but they will not fit inside the 2” square shaft. A mount could be made. Or two lights, one on either side of the shaft under the deck. Would just be for added use as it would probably not work to substitute blocked tail lights since two on the corners I believe are needed by law if that would be the intent. The C channel could work also. Not sure of weight or cost difference. But the idea is feasible. Like I say in the video, take what I made and make it better. Make the frame and try a couple different things to custom it to your needs. All the best with it and your camping adventures.

Cool! I like that I could make a custom sized rack w/out welding. The tips on the metal, the hardware pieces, tail lights, red flags are great as some of us have no clue! Do you know how much your rack weighs?

loved the video, brother. and appreciated the methodical way you explained things. i'm looking at making a carrier for a mini split ac... long story, but your ideas and that there is no welding involved makes it doable for me. what kind of drill should i get to drill into the 2" square 3/16" steel stock? also does that material come in a size that would fit a 1 - 1/4" hitch receiver? - Pete

@mic4725 2 жыл бұрын
Any basic low to medium speed drill should work. And yes square steel stock is availed in 1-1/4”. Staying with 3/16” thick wall might be best. Can also get a 1-1/4” to 2” adaptor. Might be stronger as the 1-1/4” shaft is solid steel.

Wish I had found this video before I bought my carrier. So, any suggestions on how I can add higher railing to the base of the carrier? I need higher storage.
@mic4725
@mic4725 2 жыл бұрын
A good set of straps or a cargo bungee works surprisingly well even with the low railing. However, if looking for something taller that would not require welding, I would probably add strut L brackets bolted to the underside of the strut frame coming up the sides. Then bolt shallow strut vertical sides to those at the desired height and bolt shallow strut horizontal pieces to the vertical. Then bolt strut L’s to the corners of the horizontals to lock it all in. Would be super sturdy, but may be a bit heavy. Another option is the Maker Pipe Clamps. Install the low railing as in the video, then add back to back clamps with a stub pipe between them clamping to lower railing to an upper railing. Use more clamps in the corners of the upper railing like the lower railing to lock it together. Would be lighter than the first option, but also not as heavy duty.

I’ve been looking for a diy carrier. This is so helpful. What was the finished weight and what was the heaviest load?
@mic4725
@mic4725 3 жыл бұрын
The finished weight is 55 lbs. Sorry I don’t know it’s max load capacity. It should hold a good deal though. The fishing and camping gear I carry is probably 150lbs. That’s all I’ve used it for so far. I’m 180lbs and it holds me standing on it no problem.

This looks really good! The tutorial was top notch too. I want to make something like this to haul a dirt bike. This seems like a lot of work for something that should carry 500 lbs or at least more than the chinese amazon stuff. You said 150 lbs max?
@mic4725
@mic4725 3 жыл бұрын
If you are referring to the 150lbs reply I made to one of the other posters, that was how much I have personally loaded it to. I know it can hold more, but what I personally carry is typically around 150lbs. It is very solid and just might actually hold more than the tongue rating of the receiver. I just haven’t tested it.

very cool to be able to make your own, but they seem to cost only like $80 for a real basic 500lb capacity one. This doesn't seem like it'd be worthwhile to DIY?
@mic4725
@mic4725 Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. These can be purchased for cheap money. Not sure if I would trust the 500lb on some I have seen though. But YMMV. I’ve come to realize I think this one will hold more than the tongue rating of the receiver, a little overbuilt I suppose. Oh well. I had 90% of the material so it was cheaper for me to build it. I realize most people will not have the material and would be better off just buying one. The video was more of something I was building anyway so I videoed it in case someone wanted some ideas if they needed to build a custom one. Didn’t really expect many people actually need to build one. I have since made some conversions to it and it now doubles a multi bike carrier. So it can save the cost of a bike carrier too I suppose. Thanks for checking out the video.
