In our first real project we will build an electronic dice together!
I tried to find a balance between explaining what is necessary without being too overwhelming. I think this is a very nice project if you already understand a few of the basics of microcontrollers and want to get your hands dirty with an actual small project. This electronic dice might come in handy for game nights, and what is better than having built it yourself? :)

This was a neat project! I did something similar but flashing an ATtiny85 with an UNO and using the millisecond time elapsed since the program/board was powered as a seed for the random number generator between 1 and 6. Then fed the results into a 74HC595 shift register to power the LEDs. Nonetheless, great videos you are making!

Thank you for your kind words! Yes, getting a "true" random number into a microcontroller can be a bit tricky. I like this timer idea! In the electronic candle video I used the least significant bit of four ADC inputs to generate a random flicker effect: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnTZdJSkZ956kMk

I was thinking you had some parts missing, but then I figured you were using the internal clock

Good catch! Yes, indeed, it uses the internal oscillator :) This is covered in more detail in the companion article here: www.friendlywire.com/projects/dice/#ch4
