Yes I use mix templates all the time, huge time saver. But I put your master fader plugin on another Aux bus (submix) and send that to the master fader. Usually the only thing on that Master is a meter, Console for UAD and Reference 4 for room correction. Great tutorial Graham

Having a template is great, helps me when im recording and mixing. I usually already have tracks open for instruments I usually record like Drums, Guitars, vocals, etc... And having them with reverb and delays really helps the musician and the client get into the song and give there best execution! Many clients don't have hours to spend in the studio so having all these tracks and busses all setup helps for the creative stage of the song and makes them happy.

You’re right, Graham, I HAVE heard this advice a bazillion times, but yet I’m grateful for you & all the other talented engineers out there who have been saying this. After a ton of years studying the craft, I should know better by now. Anyway, TODAY, I cease beating myself up about my ignorance & I’m doing templates from NOW on. Thank you so much, YOU ROCK! 🙌🏽

I use Reaper. I always use and build/tweak templates. For both mixing and especially mastering. Buses for Drums , Guitars , and Bass(s) always. I always start with EQ , Gate , Reverb , Compression , Limiting for drums. For guitars and bass , I start with EQ , and Compression (with maybe a little Chorus sometimes). On the Master Fader , I typically use EQ , Compression , and Limiting. I generally use 16 & 24 Track templates for recording and/or mixing , and 2 Track for Mastering. That has saved me a lot of time for both myself and clients.

Mixing without a template is mind numbing! I used to do it before I knew about this and it was as if I were back using a Fostex 8 trk!
@YonyGut1MoviesandVideogames5 жыл бұрын
I use some templates: when I track rhythm guitars, I always do it AT -12dB, and on the guitar bus I already have EQ, COMPRESSOR and DELAY (sometimes REVERB) unabled, and activate them and start to tweak the settings from there. I even created some EQ PLUGINS (rhythm guitar, solo guitar, bass, synths, etc). That's for sure something that helps you SPEED THINGS UP, but sometimes I fall on the "trap" of EQing BY DEFAULT (not actually listening to the track and what it really needs) :/ Working on that rookie mistake.. haha

Thanks for sharing this info. I am just beginning to try this and I have saved a few templates of songs that sounded the best to me. What I have done is very basic, I have saved templates along with the tracks with final mix settings all round, so that I can listen to how the tracks sound. I have not used group busses for drums, but will do so now. Thanks again for the valuable tips. It will be as you say consistent and time saving. Cheers 😊😊 😊😊 😊😊 😊

I use a recording template with tracks/channels pre-configured that covers the basics for just about any recording I've done: 1) Drum VSTi that's configured with a good starting preset. 2) Bass track routed from a high-Z input and using a bass VST plug-in set to a preset I like 3) Two guitar tracks routed from the same high-Z input and using a guitar VST plug-in set to two presets I like 4) Vocal track routed from a mic input and a compressor VST plug-in 5) Acoustic guitar track routed from the same mic input 6) A keyboard VSTi that I like with the MIDI routing in place from my keyboard I will add or delete tracks as needed but this is a good starting point for me. I also have a reverb send channel pre-configured with a reverb VST plug-in and because I use Cakewalk SONAR X1, I use the ProChannel settings on my tracks and my Master fader. This saves a ton of time, especially the input selection, choosing VST/VSTi and the MIDI routing.
@A.J.995 жыл бұрын
That's actually the starting point of every mix I work on. I've got the 'blank' project with all the tracks and busses where some plugins were already added , the faders and the sends were set up, so I just need to import the audio files to every track to start the mixing.

Templates all day, for sure! I usually have Groups for backing vox/harms and rhythm guitars depending on the tune as well (as you noted). I’d recommend adding a video on tips and tricks for easily routing the relevant tracks that belong in a group to the corresponding Aux. Seems second nature to those who do it on the regular, but might be helpful as a Part Two? Thanks as always for the great content!

I'm a big fan Graham as well as a student of many courses if yours. Question though...couldn't I just create a mix template and pull that template up and use it for my tracking session. I'd have everything deactivated and then when I'm ready to mix, activate them. Doesn't this take away the step if having to import tracks or import my mix template in to where my Trax are?

Wonderful stuff! Helped me tweak my existing templates in great ways! One question: when I slap a compressor on the Master with settings in the ballpark of yours, I don’t see any Gain Reduction happening in the compressor meters. Seems to require a much lower Threshold, which gets things squishy sounding. Any thoughts? Thanks as always for the great content!!!
