More ideas for the phasor gun from an electronics guy. Put a small laser pointer, into a CGB electrical cord grip. Take the top piece and cut it out to hold a 3-AAA battery holder. Put a Piezo buzzer under the metal gridwork to duplicate the phasor sound, and a round doorbell button for a trigger. Would be as realistic as could be for under $20. Gonna have to build one now

My opinion on DIY prop shop: When this first came out, with Dustin as the host, I found that it was not quite a "how to" video, but not a showcase of what he did either. Let me explain: He would often miss out when explaining some of the more crucial steps, such as how to use certain tools, and the editing skipped some important steps with him saying, after a cut, "So I put some of ___ on to these ___." But you weren't sure how he did it. As the episodes went on, it became more understandable what he was doing and why, and it became mush more of an instructional video, and easier for people to follow along with. I feel Odin really mastered this concept of explanation while keeping the video short and simple. Now though, I feel as though this video is going the wrong way. Skipping over some of the more important bits, and not really describing the process she took to get to the finished product. I hope this she/ editors/ producers/ directors can try to make it more of an instructional video. Thanks.

The interesting thing is that you did exactly what the crew did for the Original Series as well as a good chunk of the movies and The Next Generation in taking every day items and making props out of them. The Tricorder was made in a similar way, and that little scanning cylinder McCoy used was nothing more than a repurposed salt shaker. I really like this episode for the fact it gets right into how it was done back then. Would be interested to see how you guys go about making a TOS Tricorder.

first off if the creator of the prop sees this; do not take it as just pure bashing, what im trying to convey is constructive criticism of mistakes which where most likely due to either time and/or budget constraints. with that said as someone that makes props as a hobbyist with the aim of ''it doesn't have to be perfect but it at least has to look convincing enough to be usable on film at 48fps'' this looks like its really cheap build made with some fancy tools without any of the final steps needed to finalize that kind of build because it was done in a day by someone not experienced enough to make that combination of factors work... I've always felt there are 3 base factors in art: price to create, time it takes, and the quality of the final piece. when working as a hobbyist in a small group or alone only 2/3 can be accomplished at once... low price + good quality = long time to make, good quality + fast = expensive, and what i feel this shows; fast + low price = poor quality
@menteausenteprops9 жыл бұрын
I think that every single tool used in this video is used in an inapropiate way. I would definitively not use most of those tools in this build even using the same materials. well, the jig saw is good I gues...

+MAking Props Well, sometimes you need to improvise.
@VariablePenguin9 жыл бұрын
+MAking Props She used a router bit on her rotary tool to carve out sections to a certain depth. She used a drill to drill holes. She used a jigsaw to cut complex shapes from wood. She used a vise to clamp the piece down while she did everything else. Don't see how she used any of those tools incorrectly.
@menteausenteprops9 жыл бұрын
+VariablePenguin simple, the stone used on the dremel wasn't apropiate for wood, she used the rotary bit to make raised areas, which are MUCH easier to raise them using any kind of thin plastic, why did she break the front part while drilling? guess what, wrong drill bit type and too much force aplied. I can keep going on
@VariablePenguin9 жыл бұрын
+MAking Props I thought she broke the front part because she hit that massive knot in the wood.

@urmominabox879 жыл бұрын
You can do everything she did with a basic handsaw, a coarse rasp/file, and sand paper. Additional items that would make the finished product look better would be an automotive body filler or drywall putty to fill in the grain before painting, which will leave you with a smoother finish, and maybe some satin poly clear coat.

Many of their prop materials exceed $30 USD anyway lol.

+Keith Chan for the most part i would have to agree with you on this. as for the tools though, you gould get any of the tools she used pretty cheaply and with a bit of thought, you could always just use your standard dremel tool to still do pretty much everything here. using the power tool versions just makes it faster but you could still get the old traditional hand tool versions too. while being ABLE to do everything in the living room has its appeal, many of us who watch this show are usually the type who have at least some sort of work area to do this kind of stuff in.

+steprockmedia Of course they don't, as the male hosts don't dress in the most ridiculous hipster fashion of the moment. I'm sure if the male hosts donned some hard-gay leathers, with nipple-clamps, a buttoned-down butt-flap and codpiece, people would make comments. As it stands, they wear normal clothes.

@pmodd9 жыл бұрын
Raccoon Thing Normal for who? It's normal attire for a frumpy 70+ year old woman, but not a female 20-35 years old (she looks so fucking rough I dare not guess her age). Personally, I feel that it's a great comparison. If the guys wore hardcore gay S&M gear, it's reasonable to expect people will comment on it. If a woman 20-35 years old dyes her hair grey, and wears clothes/glasses only favored by pensioners, it's also reasonable to expect that people will comment on it. The point of comparison is the *audience reaction* to an abnormal appearance, not the degree to which the choice of attire is more common.
@pmodd9 жыл бұрын
steprockmedia Lmao, you aren't sticking up for anyone buddy. The individual in question dressed that way to get a reaction from the viewer, be it voiced or not. Her expectation was probably "wow how cool, sick look girl", but the reality became "my grandma wants her clothes back". Also, try to read things as they were written. At no point did I say that cliche homosexual S&M gear is "hipster", I simply said that were they to dress that way, people would certainly comment on it. Would you prefer if I instead said "if the male hosts wore Teddy Bear onesies, people would comment on it". Incidentally, I once worked at a theme park when I was in University, and every Friday/Saturday night one of my colleagues (who was a really hardcore gay dude) would get changed into black vinyl boy shorts and a black vinyl singlet top after work. Dude would walk out of the gates past security, to the carpark, dressed like Hard Gay (search KZbin to see what he looks like). Funniest thing I've ever seen in any job.

Looks cool...a bit big...but quirky and cool. One thing to add...the type 1 phaser (on top) is backwards.

Um, hate to nitpick, but you put the phaser I (the black part on top) on backwards. The grid goes forward, the setting wheels go toward the back.

I like this gal, her bubbly attitude is great. honestly I didn't find the build to be all that interesting.

Hellboy's Right Hand of Doom preferably wearable, but for display would be cool too.

(Don't pay any attention to me, Trekkies. I'm just commenting a random thought.) I wonder if a lightsaber could deflect a beam from a phaser like does the laser blaster bolts in Star Wars?
@Adahop9 жыл бұрын
+Damon Fyrian It would more likely either pass through the light saber or be absorbed by it rather than be deflected. Blasters fire bolts of plasma energy while phasers fire beams of nadion particles (fictitious artificial particles capable of liberating atomic nuclei). On the highest setting phasers will disintegrate unshielded targets at an atomic level. They're designed to weaken and eventually cut through shields, so the lightsaber would probably weaken on contact with the phaser beam, but on the other hand it might just straight up absorb the shot like it does with force lightning.
@DamonFyrian9 жыл бұрын
Adahop A lightsaber is a blade of concentrated plasma, so there is no way to weaken it, since the power source is in the hilt. And lightsabers don't absorb force lightning, but they *can* deflect/redirect it, like Mace Windu did.
@Adahop9 жыл бұрын
Damon Fyrian I distinctly remember Yoda's saber absorbing Dooku's lightning. Am I wrong? And phasers have the capability to dismantle atoms themselves, which includes plasma. Either way it'd be a cool fight to see.
@DamonFyrian9 жыл бұрын
Adahop Yoda never used a saber against Dooku's lightning. He used the Force Ability Tutaminus, which *is* capable of energy absorption (it can also be used to stop a lightsaber barehanded, but that is much harder to do).
@Adahop9 жыл бұрын
Oh whoops, that's what it was. You're clearly the Star Wars fan and I'm clearly the Trekkie, haha. I was basing the absorption assumption off an entry on Wookiepedia that says they're capable of absorbing force lightning. Maybe it was an EU thing.

its made almost entirety of wood. I would have preferred a method that didn't call for a chunk of wood and heavy tools.

Way awesome tutorial. How would you make it without wood. I don't have wood tools. I use foam board for my table top terrain builds.

I would love to see another diy Star Wars thing besides the x-wing pilot helmet. Maybe Boba Fett's helmet?

This is cool and all, but most of us don't do the whole woodworking thing. DIY props are fun, but if it's something we can't do, then there's no fun to be had. Still a great video to watch!! :)

My only complaint with the finished piece is that the barrel/nozzle/end thing extended too far out the front of the gun, i would have cut the silver piece almost in half and used the forward piece from its widest point. Points for effort though.
