+Alyssa Jackson I get that people want to make things themselves as do I, but you can buy a BADASS all metal, Cap shield that is super High quality for $80. I have one myself because the materials was going to cost me $45 and it wouldn't have been metal. I mean the one I have is a 1:1 replica, leather straps on the inside, it looks almost exactly like the exact prop in the movie. You can get it with or without battle damage, mine has the damage. You can also get cheaper versions that are like $40 but they aren't made of metal, made of a Polymer material either way, to me it isn't worth it when it costs the same or less than materials to buy it.

I got beautiful results using this (scary) hot oil method, although it was tricky keeping the cooking oil at 400 degrees F. I tried heating the PVC for 60 secs vs. merely 30 secs and had better results, however, you've got to hold it in place longer to give the PVC time to cool down and hold its shape. Bravo, DIY Prop Shop!

@vinnylogozio75998 жыл бұрын
Im glad dude. Also maybe look into these electric blankets made for bending PVC. The idea is to wrap a length of pipe, heat it up, and bend with your hands while it's still wrapped. Haven't tried that one yet though!
@vinnylogozio75998 жыл бұрын
Also - if possible try to do this on an electric stovetop. It will be much safer. I had to be really really careful here.
@tencrawler8 жыл бұрын
+Vinny Logozio Good catch on the electric burner. Peanut and palm oil also have a higher smoke/flash point, might give yourself more control over maintaining the optimal temperature and avoid de-gassing the material.

Tip for the hot knife if you're looking to buy one. DO NOT buy just a hot knife by itself. Go to where your hobby shop keeps their wood stuff, look for their wood burning tools. Most come with different attachments, usually at least one if not two blade types. They're typically the same price as the ones sold by themselves, or just slightly more expensive (we're talking 2-4 bucks).
@vinnylogozio75998 жыл бұрын
Great tip! Yeah the one I'm using came in a set like you're describing. It's a good value.
@Telos954x8 жыл бұрын
Vinny Logozio Most def. A lot of places like Michaels are cashing in on the recent boom in cosplay and prop making dealing with EVA foam and thermoplastics and the customers searching for / asking about hot knives by selling them as a singular product at around the same price as one of those kits. I guess a lot of people don't realize they're the same thing, but you get a lot more for about the same budget. And as one of my heroes (Alton Brown) always says : Don't bother with unitaskers if there's a multitasking tool that does the same job and then some
