This underwater rov/drone was relatively easy apart from sourcing the parts from eBay and amazon as some parts where very hard to find at a cheap price.
Another problem is the visibility of the waterways in the UK and with winter upon us the water clarity isn't the best so it may be a summer project to use the rov/drone.

You need to use impeller desgin drive. Props in a tube with a guard on the front and smaller holes down the side so your still get some drive if guard is blocked.

Wow G that's turned out amazingly well. Considering it's being put in a canal which in England means liquid that's more of a soup than your traditional water it returns some lovely images. If you're planning on improvements one thing I think you could easily achieve with a single servo is a mechanism to tilt the camera forward and backwards. Front facing camera is well and good for navigation but if you can make it point 45 degrees downwards you can look at the canal bed without having to get so close you either hit it or disturb a load of silt. Also, I can see you've got the tether and data line mounted to one of the floats, ideally you need this mounted directly behind the center of forward thrust, if its to the side it'll cause uneven drag and make the unit turn unintentionally, if it's above or below it'll pitch. Awesome work though, really interesting build.

You certainly put alot of work into that, looks a work of art! A problem i can see there is the power cable getting snagged on underwater obstacles. For the power source, a couple of power banks or one of those jump start units, would be more convenient than lugging a car battery around!

That's way cool. Here's a thought... Have an arm in front of camera with a remote release to drop a magnet onto your target. Excellent work G!

I would consider this a successful test, I would suggest more maneuverability, and as many toughening measures as you can think of, but as a first run you're on an excellent course

This is a great submersible project! Is it possible to modify this design to include an HD 360 camera so we can go back through the footage from all angles of each dive?

1100 gph bilge pumps cut all the casings off the motor will need to make prop adapters , and 50 to 60mm rc boat prop, is a good cheep option, prob with brushless is you'll need a better control board, although i have seen people yousing s-bus rc gear witch is also simple to set up, at some point will do the sbus with mine if i ever get it finished haha

what did you use to seal the motors? was that toilet wax? any tips on applying it?

The motors are in a camera film tube and sealed with toilet bowl wax, thats it

I like the camera setup you used. Great pictures! I know its not clear but you can't help the water clarity. As far as drives, I've seen similar projects using boat bilge pumps. Andvantages: already water-tight, 12 Volt, powerful, protected impellers, and easy to wire. The disadvantages are that they only thrust in one direction so you will need six instead of three. If you do use them get one's without built-in float switches. When installing the thrusters, instead of pointing them directly backwards, try installing them pointed 45 deg towards the center line of the craft. This will allow you to turn in place.

Might be able to get video out via the usb on the gopro as you already have wires going to the surface,thats if you had WiFi problems.

Only problem i would have is id have to drill a hole in the waterproof go pro case and seal it all with silicone sealer, so it would be possible thanks for the idea

Nice work 👍 I think it would be a good idea to use some guards around the props and also fix the camera on a tilt/pan gimbal. You can also use a 2.4ghz radio set and some ESC on the motors for precise control. 2.4 ghz should be able to penetrate into the water, but even if it won’t, Rx can be wired out and float on surface.

So you aren’t using any ballast tanks. The pvc tubes are just to add buoyancy

Dont you need both rear impeller to turn to get it to go forward

No if you use one it turns slower but if you use both in opposite directions it turns faster
