To paint the lines in the windows I took a piece of glass... I spread the paint fairly thin on the glass and set the windows on the glass with the ridge side down. The glass is perfectly flat and I had very good success with that technique.

Great work Dave. It will be great storage for locos. they are tough kits and fun to kitbash. cant wait to see it all come together.

This is the only walthers kit that I disliked building. Not enough time was put into the design which made it a very difficult kit to build. Couldn't pay me enough to build it again and you built 2. Bravo!! Looks great! -JG

Thanks for the review! Good information to know. I’m sure with all the extra parts with a little kitbashing it’s possible to make all sorts of other railroad facilities.

I built the single kit, assembly is fun with lots of patience. I learned with all Walthers kits always read the instructions then test fit, consult the instructions and test fit, and then test fit. Then once your done with all the test fitting - assemble the large components with scotch tape or painter tape. Partially because of the instructions, partially because there's usually warped parts. I used a sharpie and many hours to paint the windows. After all that - then go ahead and slowly glue. It takes a lot of time - but its worth it - and rewarding. Still really good job with your build.

ya that was a 3 day build, I think what messed me up the most is because the window section was so long and narrow, with nothing to support it in the center. so even to test fit it, was a pain in my. . . .

I believe that the more time a kit takes to build - the more monies worth i get out if it. I call it, The "Dollar Per Minute entertainment ratio" :)

Nice work Dave! Yeah, Walthers kits sometimes gives you fits, and causes you to learn some new curse words!! 😠😠😠 for their window frames, I always use a Sharpie Paint Pen. Great results, one coat! You're right. The shop does really look impressive! I want one of those kits myself, but I'll end up with MANY spare parts. I can't build anything that massive! Mine will probably have to be cut down to 2 bays. For all the pain, it really did turn oot GREAT!!😀😎

I NEED other kits first, all Walthers Background Buildings. My Layout is long, but narrow.

I'll never do one myself (I think I have an app for that LOL), but I appreciate the trial and error approach you showed in this vid! It'll look great on your layout. . . . Diana

An idea that occurred to me was to use a paint product that the airplane modelers use called panel liner.its basically a black was that is very thin, but it gathers up at edges or in depressions, it might gather at the vane lines on the windows

Paint pens work pretty well for the windows. Medium point.

Hi there. My first viewing. I'm currently assembling. 2 WALTHERS Back shop buildings. Your building came out great. I am looking forward to what i'm building after seeing your project i may add that to the set. Very helpful & encouraging to build. My project is retro to the 1990's original. Very good video.🎥🏬🏬

First off I am offended that you think I would suggest you don't think lol. Second from what I remember with walthers kits you have to take your time as the instructions plain suck major balls. As for the build it came out fantastic good work. My advice for the future would be to get a micro brush and paint the grooves in the window pains. Will give you the best results hence taking your time. Can't wait to see it on the layout.

Interesting, these kits always leave a bit to figure out on your own, ie, roof support not there on one side. Learned the hard way myself, now I trust nothing and approach almost as a kitbash. Always have to do some custom supports , etc.

i built the new river mine that had similar windows...i used a piece of foil flattened out and brushed some black paint on it and used it like a stamp pad worked well

It has been a long time since I put that kit together. The lower roof sits on a small ledge when the upper wall is in the correct position. I had to think a couple of times when assembling it. Its always fun doing Walthers kits. I didn't bother to paint the windows and I use white glue to glue the windows in so they don't get melted by the model glue. You will get the hang of it. The more you do the harder it gets. lol
@sparky1071078 жыл бұрын
lol, I think the next kit might just be a tool shack, 4 walls and a roof, how can I mess that up

hi sparky... after over-coming all the obstacles the build turned out terrific... a word of advise... when you build a kit whether it's a scratch build or a kit build always think ahead of what your next step(s) will be..do a moc up before you glue your kit together & most important take your time.. looking forward to seeing this kit o your layout... vinny

Why do they make such a simple kit so difficult? I feel your pain Sparky and a great job of getting things together, looks great and can't wait to see it on the layout. I'm building the "Diesel Facility" by Walther's (2 of them back-to-back) I don't think they ever intended for us to build them like that. Some modifications and still not finished. Oh well!!! Thanks for the video and don't pull your hair out Bro. D. Muse

Build a table in MS Publisher with the correct dimensions and print out on acetate sheets, (practice on plain paper first!) I did that for one of their N scale kits because I too w a s frustrated.

comment on the windows...I'm still in the process of building my mine company, for the windows I found a make up sponge works really well, I gave all my windows 3 coats of paint. first black, then white but not enough to completely cover the black, then a brownish color, again, not to completely cover the black and white. it is a little tedious but if your careful and patient enough, it goes pretty quick once you get it down. the only real tedious part is if your not patient enough them you will have to use like a toothpick to lightly scrape away any paint from the glass surfaces them selves. but if you leave a little on, it actually gives the impression of dirty windows. I have a quick video of my mine build. if you watch it you should be able to see the windows, I think, not sure if I had gotten that far when I posted that vid...lol...I hope this helps. before I forget. when using the sponges, lightly dab your paint on, don't just start smashing away on the sponge as if it's not going to smash down onto the glass surface. it will!!!...lol...have a good one buddy...peace...
