Loving this series, very inspirational to see a layout progress. I tried to do a similar series with my 009 layout and have managed three episodes over about a year as it's so hard to find the energy to film as I go - much more enjoyable just working on it without filming. Well done!

This video made me remember how much of building a layout is literally 'just waiting for this bit to dry'. I don't miss that ha. I am surprised you didn't paint the terrain before putting in the rocks, would have thought it was easier the other way round. Cheers
@ThatModelRailwayGuy2 жыл бұрын
You're not wrong with the drying times! 😂 You could do the painting either way round to be honest. The only thing was that I would have had to paint the filler holding the rocks in place afterwards anyway so it didn't really make much difference. Thanks for watching 👍

Nice! Didn't think you could make a mold release with water and soap. Personally for when I did molds and casts I used baseline (I.e. Petroleum jelly.) A little tip for when doing casts as I've done this in my 12 years of mask making. Try slosh casting some very runny lasted first so it gets into every nook and cranny and let it sit up then come behind and top it off with a solid fill of thick plaster. Keep up the good work

Awesome, that a great tip and I'll definitely have to try that out next time I end up making a rock face of some sort! Thanks for watching 😃

A good tip is too add grey paint to the plaster so any white plaster doesn’t show through plus you don’t need to paint it once your finished
@ThatModelRailwayGuy2 жыл бұрын
Hey Robbie, yep you can definitely do that. As I said in the video though, I wanted to paint it using the same technique as did for the tunnel portals so they all looked consistent with each other. Thanks for watching 😃

When making the mix for the cliff face, if you add the paint to the mix as part of the fluid, the rock will come out pre-coloured. This also has the advantage that if the finished article gets chipped, there will not be a white gash to spoil the illusion.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, you could absolutely do that but as I mentioned in the video I wanted to paint it in the same way as the tunnels to make everything look consistent and that meant starting with a white base. Thanks for watching 😃

There’s one on the left hand side of the station loop that definitely needs looking at as after ballasting the track is very uneven there. When they’re on the points themselves though, I’m still not sure why some locos jump around a bit - I’m guessing maybe it’s because they’re set track points. Thanks for watching 😃

Looks good glad the points didn't stick now I know it's going in a suitcase once it's completed but the bare baseboard showing at the back in the fiddleyard maybe should be painted just to hide the appearance if you want to get any shots through either tunnel mouth either way still looks great and looking forward to seeing it progress further with hopefully no more hiccups along the way

Enjoying your videos. What's the plan for accessing the fiddle yard? It looks like the back opening will be completely covered by the back of the suitcase? I think you're doing much better with the derails ads. Episode 1 sounded like you were reading ad copy, while 2-3 felt much more like a personal recommendation.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy2 жыл бұрын
There is a bit of space round the back of the suitcase to access the fiddle yard if needed but it's more of a storage loop really to hide other trains out of site. Yes, I'm not use to having to read ads so it's taken a bit of practice. Funnily enough though most of my videos are scripted out beforehand - otherwise I'd ramble on forever and never get to the point! Thanks for watching 😃

Painting questions: I notice you paint directly onto the baseboard, without any undercoat. Does this cause any issues? I notice you added track & ballast and rocks and then painted the remaining areas in brown. Why do it this way rather than cover everything in brown and then lay tracks / add rocks over the top?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, no none of my layouts have ever had any issue with having paint applied to the baseboard.. the brown is acting as an undercoat anyway for the scenery that will go on top. As for the order, my hill actually goes over the track so this had to be built after the track was laid and then everything was painted brown at the same time rather than having to do it twice. Additionally, when laying tracks it can sometimes be helpful to make and follow marks on the baseboard which is harder to do if you've already painted it. Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching 😃
