A two man dedicated hunting boat would be great to see. Y’all have hundreds of videos on how to set up a fishing boat but a dedicated hunting boat would be cool.

For duck hunting - leave it as open as possible. Small front deck, gun box down one side and open thru the middle (delete the middle bench) sit on a cooler or bucket to hunt. Add spud pole brackets or holes front and back to anchor with. Maybe a couple brackets to hold spud poles and a push pole. Def a grab handle.

I think two person boat is still the move. Move the front seat up or get rid of it and frame in a small deck up front. I have always had the idea of using offset seat pedistals in a smaller boat like that so when you are driving, you can offset the weight and when you are tucked into the marsh, you both can face the same way and have maximum leg room. Can't wait to see what comes out of this!

Make it a dedicated duck boat. Notch the rear seat. Remove the middle bench. Smallest front deck as possible. Two pedestal seats. Dedicated gun box. Not long enough for rods. Keep the floor plan as open as you can. Open storage under the front deck is fine.

A duck hunting boat should be set up strictly for hunting. Nothing is stopping anyone from throwing an ice chest and couple rods in. The boat gets heavy and runs outta room fast with two people, guns, gear, decoys, batteries, and gas.

Open space is key with enough storage for the mandatory items to have on a boat and keep them out of the way. I feel a dedicated 2 man and dog is a must. I'm currently building a 16x52 with a jet pump, out here in colorado the river bottoms are rocky and get very low. * Remove front seat * small front deck - 2-3' at most * Aluminum transom!!! * Float Pods * Spud Pole brackets front and back * Floor * Catwalk - used as possible seating, cup holders and external gun storage on the side * lighting - Front, back and inside. * Front Deck - storage inside * on board charger - NOCO Genius GEN5X2 * Bilge Pump * Tie down points - help hold decoys in the boat, or tie down the bags. * Flip up blind??????? * Dog Ramp?????? * Paint job and gator glide - old school duck camo

Super stoked about this project! I’d want to make sure there’s a second seat for my dad, even if we don’t hunt from the boat and the boat is geared towards getting us/gear/the dog from A to B. Also, enough electrical work for some lights please!

I built my 14’ as a duck boat. I found that less is more and a completely open lay out is best. I would also add interior light because they make finding stuff in the dark a lot easier. No deck. Once you toss decoy bags on the deck it’s hard see what immediately in front of you.

I think you should build a two man strictly duck hunting boat. I just got done with duck season and I was looking for videos that go in depth to follow along wile I also attempt to build my boat.

Notch the rear seat. All three lids. Wont hurt to extend the gun box with golf tubes under the front deck to get a rod locker/gun box set up. Short front deck leaving the front wall of front seat. I feel like that is the easiest way to keep structure and rigidity in boat and free up space. Personally i use my boat to get where i am going, and i dont hunt directly out of it (like a blind boat). So, hauling a buddy, two dozen decoys, guns, blind bags, gass and battery is all I'm looking to do. I would put a seat mount in the front deck, and in the starboard rear "pod" you are making. I also ran my electric (fuse block, switch panel, and battery disconnect) into that same starboard "pod". Put the gun box lid on yhe port side. I purchased the Sea-Dog Black Side Mount LED Navigation Lights - 1 NM - Port & Starboard from TBN to use on my boat. I also put a Southern Led Gen 2 Lite on my boat (not a budget option). As far as the transom is concerned, maybe think coosa board? Please think about putting float pods on back, and carry some in the TBN store. Ive already sourced and mounted some on my boat. Those are my suggestions, and somewhat my plan prior to this series. I'm currently building a 1436. Watching this to see how it goes. I have not done any aluminum work yet....just Swamp Runner, float pods, and lights.

Great idea for a series! I’ve got a Jon boat just like this and I’m still collecting ideas to build it out. I want mine to be good for duck hunting and fishing. I think it’s best as a solo rig for an actual duck blind but you need to be able to haul another person to a spot if a buddy shows up. If hunting with more than just you which you typically do duck hunting, you’d set up a temp blind with t posts, netting, and local brush on the bank. You’ll also need a spot for a dog or a trolling motor to collect downed birds. I like the wide open storage under the front deck for easy access to decoys. Getting them in and out of a deck lid sounds awful. A gun box would be fine if you can’t fit a rod box. I don’t mind storing a few rods above deck when I’m fishing out of a Jon boat. I’m not bringing the whole family in one of these. I’d save up and get a bigger boat for that.

Just do a duck hunting boat. No pedestal seats. Slightly, extend the front deck and make it a bench seat with storage. Remove the middle bench seat. Only add a gunbox. Notch out the back bench. Build a hard sided blind to make it the ultimate duck hunting boat. That’s what I plan on doing to my dad’s old 1978 aluminum craft 16x48.

So, I'd throw in a small deck. That would help with setting lights up front and side for 90 deg lights. It would also have a platform for a trolling motor if someone wanted to utilize it for sneaking into area. Main reason, but a lid so it creates an area for anchor storage. PFD storage, your boat essentials. Not a 52" or a 7' locker. 52 not enough and 7 is too much for that boat I'd say a six or five with rod holes in the front. Get rid on the second bench seat. It will open up the boat floor for the dog, decoys and you and or buddies to move around more freely. Two pedestal seats (you can always leave them out), flat floor (less tripping hazards), notch the rear bench, aluminum transom for sturdiness. A foldaway or removable grab handle. Then yes interior lighting, orange, green or personal preference but importance on angling them down so not to blind yourself. There's more minor details too consider but too many to mention here. But i think it would make a great kit. Also fyi, later down the road open the kit up for not just the 14 ft but have 1648, 1852,1872.... ect. But bigger the boat the more things can be done. But thats another project for another day.

2 person for sure. id say middle seats gotta go. keep the front deck small just a giant middle area for gear and then just sit on buckets or coolers. no need to stand higher in these boats theyre not big enough to be real stable up on a deck anyway just a good spot for the dog to sit. id almost rather have spud or push pole holders than a rod locker. the gun lid just seems like unnecessary expense. float pods would help with the mud motor weight. floor pedestals wouldnt be a bad idea to add some fishing comfort for the off season.

Deck should go to the rib at 2 1/2 feet. This will allow more room for two people. It should possibly have a small winch on the bow in case hunting around levees. Gun box should go on the starboard side to give more leg room for hunting out of the port side. It would be better to hunt out the port side if a scissor blind goes up so the guy sitting aft will have more room to the left to swing the shotgun.

Rear and front lights would be nice. Doing some power mods to the surface drive would be nice. An optifade paint pattern on the boat and motor would be sick. Welded in grab bar for driver. Gun box on either side. Some type of foam flooring. Snake tube lights on interior.

Would remove front seat and put small deck up front with no hatch, locker long enough for pews and rods, flat floor and no pedestals. And maybe an option for a grab handle. The simplest and most useful Imo.

After building an aluminum front deck in my 1436, one lid in the center of it and a seat pedestal to fish from the deck, I would only ever go as minimalist as possible. It gets heavy fast especially after adding batteries and light bars and then having to put all your gear in⚓

just a few questions I started building my 1436 in June this last year and i have it pretty simple i have the 13hp surface drive on it but i only have one real complainant with just me in it and the motor (it is a feather-lite kit also) it just seems to sit really low in the water and just dost seem right on open water (sort of sluggish) maybe im used to a outboard but i upgraded from a 9.9 Johnson to the feather lite and i cant seem to get it on plain do surface drives just not get up on plane or am i doing something wrong? would it be possible to put flotation pods on the back or will that cut to badly into the turning radius of the short shaft my goal is to get me and a friend out any help or suggestions

I would stay with a dedicated hunting rig. Trying to make a combo will sacrifice design choices you would otherwise use for a dedicated system and that will lessen the comfort and layout needed to fish also. I love the process of design here. I sat and stared at my fishing build forever building it in my head! Does reserve floatation play a part here? For a fishing rig (think further from shore in deeper water) does maintaining as much floatation as possible enter into the design more than it would for a duck boat???

I need to preference this with the fact that I have never hunted duck from a boat. But hunting in general is best when you can be comfortable and concealed at the same time. This might be best as a solo hunter build plus one dog if you use one. I’m picturing low seating like you mentioned having the pedestal on the floor.
@XxOnlyx2xGendersxX
@XxOnlyx2xGendersxX Ай бұрын
@TinyBoatNation In duck boats, floor area is the name of the game! A gun locker isn't needed, my floating gun case does the trick. Can't sacrifice room for deeks and hopefully a dog! A small deck up front with a hatch is really only needed for storing life jackets and snacks. Swivel seats on the benches are good, favoring the stbd side in the back to drive and shooting out the port side. Front seat can have the swivel seat right in the middle for riding and a second base closer to stbd side to give leg room to shoot out the port. Gear can be used to counter balance the weight on the port side. And remember, scissor blinds take up more room than you think, especially around your gunnel.

I vote for remove the front bench seat, full length wood floor, gun/rod boxes/storage on each side full length, and pedestal seat bases, one in front, one in rear. That would be an efficient use of space in a boat like this. Main thing for a duck boat is open cockpit as much as possible for versatility.
