additional boats you should look at is sirius 35 ds for hidden workshop, and if you are going for pilothouse the slocum 43 pilothouse is a great layout, also i am a fan of dry heads vs wet heads. forward on catalina 42 replaces that room with a good sized head.

You have done an impressive amount of work on the layout and the CAD really helps to appreciate the nuances and trades offs involved into producing the compromise.😉 Just a couple of armchair thoughts 1. Have you considered a sliding pocket door for the head and any other doors where this would be advantageous. 2. For the dinghy dock ( which you seem keen to achieve), have you considered a cranked bulkhead as the forward bulkhead of the dock, the ‘crank’ approximately following the shape of the first one third of the dinghy (from the bow), it may give you more useable space in the technical area. 3. Are you keeping all diesel fuel tanks, systems, filling points all aft of the living accommodation (smells). Keep up the good (and interesting) work.😀⛵️👍

Looks lovely! I like it a lot! Something I have been dreaming in my head for a while, Garcia 52 exploration being the role model or the subject for modifications. Maybe the biggest difference to these designs is that in my yacht the cockpit would be fully covered with hard top and side walls (with big windows naturally). Even the back wall would be possible to close down, but possibly only with canvas. That would make the cockpit like a half dry place. Little step towards the new generation of vendee globe boats. Water would come in with wet ropes and so, but you would allways be protected from the wind, rain and snow while sailing. After I got kids I purchased a Targa 31 motorboat, and I will never ever be going back to sitting in the rain, or being the unlucky one who is sacrifised to the elements when shit hits the fan. Last summer I was able to sail a small 30ft sailing boat with raised saloon and an inside steering station. I loved it! In my opinion the sailing season here in the north is 3 months instead of the 9 icefree months just because of that. My mototrboat has been in active use from march to december and best seasons are at the ends, but I dont feel the same with sailing boats and its a design that makes the difference. t-shirt is the way to go, also in december. I have also been dreaming about the small sauna that would serve as a drying cabinet as we are used to here in the north. I havent come up with the master idea how to arrange the stowe. Both wood and electric stowes come with big problems, but the idea is tempting to me. Most of the water and outdoor activities in northern waters end naturally in a short sauna session. I´d like to be updated of your project... 👍

Exactly what you said. In cruising boat the helm station needs to be protected from elements at all times. What if autopilot(s) fail when you're going through cold weather? Not nice. In my opinion unjustified traditions play waaaay too big role in sailboat design. Starting from the things like mast, sails and steering positions. In my project i'm kind of trying to tackle those. But in the end, there's really nothing that new in this. It's just special combination of features I think are important. First part of the boat will be laminated this week! 😎

Your interior layout is very detailed. Nicely done. One thing I like about the Sirius boats is the social connection between the salon and cockpit. In your design, the salon and cockpit look like they are socially separated by a wall made of the aft cabin, helm station, and wet locker. Obviously, changing that would change the helm and wet locker at the least. I wonder if the helm instruments can be moved (maybe to the left of the wheel?) and the wet locker lowered (like in the Sirius boats) to make room for another salon window...?

Yeah, I am aware of this. At the very early stage I pondered this issue. The option was to do more like Sirius/Moody type of thing but since then I decided to go with this, more Garcia type of solution. It two blade sword. If there’s good visibility, the light inside will disturb the visibility at night. But on the other hand there’s this point of yours. I will look at this issue more in detail later anyway. 🙂

This is very similar to Kulali in layout. I have used all the same inspirations ie Garcia and Sirius. I am slightly worried about how cramped it will feel with a raised saloon table compared to non raised. If you don’t raise It you gain around 1.5 foot to either side, instead of the shelf space. So quite conflicted. But definitely more keen to have a raised saloon for a better light situation. In my boat the technical room idea seems abit too small. The 35D tech room actually looks very tiny after researching it. Instead of where you have your bathroom I was going to put a little workshop room. And have the bathroom opposite the main cabin. We have slightly different layouts though. I’ll post a vid soon on what my layout will be. Very interesting similarities. Being an engineer I really really want a technical room or workshop on board. I would love the second cabin to be able to convert into an office after watching your vid. Cheers
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes, the raised saloon is obviously not as wide as the whole hull would be. But on the other hand, I will gain more walkable floor without getting to the curved hull on the side. We actually widened the original hull in the middle with some amount to get more usable space for this layout. For now it seems to be working quite well. :) That technical room is still very much only "placeholder". I still have no idea if the space is big enough for all the thing that should go in there. :P Good to hear from the projects! Cheers!

Is there a reason for having the dinghy garage off center? What have you planned to use the space behind the starboard berth for? Extending the width to the entire hull you'd gain some storage space. Also noted there is no sink in the head. Just missing from the model or where have you planned to fit it?
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the questions. The garage is off center for gaining some room to the stern cabin. The space formed behind it will be most likely to be just storage of some sort. :) The hull shape is "locked" so I cannot widen the stern any more. There's many reasons for making it narrower. First is the ability to go with single rudder (=simpler), another include comfort ratio and behavior in waves etc. No sink in the head (or galley) yet. But it should fit well between the seat and shower. :)

I have heard two reasons to have two heads. Having one on the port side and one on the starboard side means you can choose a more comfortable side when heeling. That makes a bigger difference when the head faces the center of the boat. The other reason is that traditional marine toilets are not super reliable. You don't want to be two weeks out to sea and have no functional head. With your aft facing head, it should be equally annoying on any point of sail. If you opt for a composting toilet -- there isn't much that can go wrong. If you opt for a more traditional head so you can have overboard discharge -- definitely think about your backup plan if the head goes out of commission while underway.
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel Жыл бұрын
Your highness. This is something I’ve been thinking. I was going with composting toilet at some point but maybe that’s too much of an hassle. The location of the toilet is high enough to provide gravitational “exit” to the sea. So I’ve been thinking of making smallish holding tank right below the seat and simple drain out (and pipe to the deck of course) I have “similar” system in my current boat that has the tank underneath the seat. Much better that pumping poop up I think! No fear of messy mistakes there! 🤢
@lordgothington
@lordgothington Жыл бұрын
@@ArcticSeaCamel Like most things in boat design, there is no best answer, only what is best for you. I know a number of longtime coastal cruisers who have switched to composting toilets and love them. I think they are less smelly and easier to deal with than black water tanks. For offshoring cruising -- pumping overboard is nice. I lived in a tent for 6 months and used a toilet seat balanced on a bucket. I've used that same system in my boat while it is on the hard. Even though it was the cheapest, most hacked up solution, I found it enjoyable to use. My current boat is primarily for coastal cruising, often in waters were you can never discharge overboard -- so I think I may switch to a DIY composting system rather than fix the leaks and smell with my traditional head. If you ended up with a composting head in your shop, I'm sure you'll form an opinion on whether you'd want such a system on your boat.

Good and interesting question. Nothing decided yet. I'm a bit propellerhead (if you haven't noticed 😜) and it would be interesting to do some kind of control system. But on the other hand the boat will be ocean going vessel and certain redundancy is very important. Also the boat will not be luxury yacht so no need to "be fancy" just to sake for fanciness. That said, I really haven't yet gone in details at all with this matter. NMEA2000-based digital switching (like Mads has on Athena) could be possibility to reduce the amount of cables and have flexible system that could be changed just with some simple programming. But also we'll see how these systems have evolved in few years when this becomes topical.

I can’t tell if you have any bridge deck to keep massive amounts of sea water getting through the large companionway??
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel Жыл бұрын
Hi Peter! Good point you have there. There's about 200-300mm threshold on the companway door, which should keep most of the surprise water out. I've also made the cockpit open to the stern to make it drain quickly. Only small regress on the door to drain. The cockpit is pretty well protected as well. So I don't think there's a big risk of wave crashing suddenly on cockpit. And IF there's weather that would give risk for that, the door will be fully waterproof when closed. And on those conditions I bet it will be! (And I hope never (never say never) to get myself into conditions like that) 😰

So some 4 years ago I think we spoke about a a Dix AC ? I am curious why the cad work (I assume) you are using is still so basic. If I recall often price was an issue so if I may ask, what is the overall budget for this project? All the non standards say of "engines, heating, batteries...." as readily available today are likely not going to be taken advantage according to the video are not of your interest. Think of the cost just in routing the chain weight to the center of the boat for... Is there a concern about Bows buoyancy? That is a crash bulkhead in the chain locker and serves as a safety which suggest's to me that you will need to build a compensating area for the chain and drag winch. All of which needs servicing. A crack or a hole up there is not as easy as the water in the bilge to see and locate. What is her intended displacement? See where I am going with this, suggestions with so little information is like fishing without bait. One final mention: Mr. Dix was attempting to offer me a work around on the drawing he produced. By the time I finished doing my own math on the changes I wrote him and said "perhaps I just need to reflect on the real priorities and not disturb the dynamics or choose another design. Dix put my feet back on the planet. Dix again has drawings in your size of boat so why not buy that, then make your sketches and ask his opinion? At least you will have direction and a good shot at a completed project. Just my thoughts
@ArcticSeaCamel
@ArcticSeaCamel 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the message! The process of the design has been a little slow but things are starting to find their places. The reason I haven't really gone much forward with the final plans yet was that I wanted to get into the structures first. Now I have information of that (i mean frames, keels, mast steps etc.) and I start to build them. They take some space inside and now there's really possible to start figuring these out. The structural principles are made by mr. Tanton and I'm verifying all those kind of things from him. For now I should be good to go to start the hull build. After all, it's just a hull. I have done some weight calculations on google sheet already, you can check the link from the description. It should be quite close already although not everything is known yet. The most heavy things are located right on the middle of the boat (like batteries and tanks) but I still need to check them now when I've got the structures mostly done. The final displacement should be around 15000kg. The original design was steel hulled boat which has been widened and lowered (the draft) just a bit. So there's still "plenty of headroom" weight-wise. Just because the hull weight in wood-epoxy is so much lighter. The reason I'd like to get the chain to the middle as well is just the weight distribution and reduce weight on the bow. The forward mast is already there (reserved weight for that is around 400kg) so it shouldn't harm to get some weight out from there. I agree the "problem" with the bilge water and the anchor chain. That's something I need to figure out. Anyway the chain locker should be robust and probably stainless. The winch is therefore located at the top of the locker. There's pipe from the bow roller straight to there and shouldn't be a problem. Think of chain systems on catamarans. This kind of system is in Garcia Exploration boats. The winch is located in a recess with a hatch. As for budget and all the installations; I haven't really made any final decisions yet. I would like the boat hull to be "universal" in that manner that all the technology can be installed and/or changed over time without needing to cut out everything. So I'm not gonna "integrate" any tech into the boat in that manner. Also I want to have as little as possible that kind of gadgets. But essentials will be there. (like dishwasher! 😀) The "unverified" budget is around 100K€. That should include the complete boat with masts, sails and basic equipment. We'll see how that goes. The masts are of course the most expensive parts and their price is the biggest question-mark. By that I mean the material cost. I will build the masts as well. (they're really not off-the-shelf stuff anyway)

Wet heads are the worst solution since you have to dry everything else after a shower. 4 burners? I keep on pace with some KZbin channel and they affirm that even 3 is too much. There is no hatches on the main saloon ceiling. You decided to two masts, so this means that you’re going to have twice as much work and worries. Of course these are my very particular opinions. Congratulation for the iniciative. I wish I had the youth to do the same. Good luck.

@@alcibiadesmarcialneto922 Hi! Interesting viewpoints you have! Thanks for these questions! The whole reason for even considering building my own is that there's no production boats (read: cheap and new enough) with those features I want to have. Which are the points I've gone through in the videos. And I don't want to buy project boat either. There's almost as much work but the boat will be old anyway. This thing is not designed for "everyone" but for my imagined needs. Plan is to keep it indefinitely, but I believe if I have to sell it some day, there will be someone that appreciate the choices I've made. :) We have 100sqm apartment with four people living in it and have just one "wet" bathroom. And it's totally enough. That's the cultural differences. When doing a boat that has less than tenth of the space, why would you waste it into extra toilet or shower? And that's extra plumbing, extra maintenance etc. I would understand if there were ten people all the time onboard. As for "wet head", there of course will be some kind of wall between the head and shower but they definitely need to be in same space. Think of female guest with certain time of month for example. The galley is very much work in progress. Most likely two burner would be enough but full size oven is something that is needed anyway. We'll see how it goes. And they will be electric of course. There will be windows/hatches/ventilation and stuff eventually. Just not in the 3d-model yet. :) I thing two free standing masts are the simplest possible solution for rig. There's no stays or shrouds with all nicknacks and no headsails to worry. Just two simple mainsails and most likely some big light wind sail as extra. So there's like less than 1/100 of stuff compared to traditional rig. So I really don't see them extra work but extra reliability and ease instead. (for example tacking with cat ketch doesn't need any effort, just turn the wheel) Thanks! :)
