Building a 16 foot Barto Designed Melonseed skiff named Allure Too. Never published this before because I had computer and phone problems. It has been lost in the archives ever since, so here it is, hope you enjoy.

That is a beautiful looking boat. I am impressed with how the bead and cove works.

@@RexandKathie How do they sail?
@RexandKathie3 жыл бұрын
@@BensWorkshop 'They are great little boats, very sea worthy. Gaff rig on the 16 and sprit rig on the 13.5. The sprit is the ultimate in simplicity, unstayed rig. Very shallow draft, fun.

While I'm not into all the gourmet versions of historic boats and all the glass and epoxy and more epoxy and more glass, preferring simple historic methods, I get that this is a work of art and hope you priced it accordingly. My only suggestion is next time try wider strips closer to carvel and you will see that its less work and still looks sharp. In fact try skipping the interior glass and steam in ribs instead. Then just one coat of penetrating epoxy if even that, then varnish, Maybe even tan paint on the bottom. Traditional methods build faster and still fetch money for their rarity and greater authenticity.

Rex & Kathie: This is such excellent work! Are you still building Melonseeds? Your work shows the inherent carpentry skills needed to make a Melonseed come to life. If I could make one suggestion as a videographer: try to insert some real time video of the laborious parts like the sanding or planing to show the prospective builder how much real workmanship is needed to achieve this gorgeous result. The still shots dissolving into one another with minimal narration really do NOT give the viewer enough time to process the steps needed to build a boat. IF you're still building, I would love to see what is next. You could also offer practical advice to folks trying to restore a Melonseed or something like it. That service alone, based upon you prior experience and bona fides here could net you a few extra dollars!

Our latest project is building a Wharram Tiki 21 which we are documenting ,up to Episode 7 so far. Agree that the still shots do not convey all the information that a video does. Check our channel for all of the Wharram videos and one that we had to do over on our Caledonia Yawl, Kathleen. We built 5 Melonseeds and several other boats. We are utilizing more video and narration in the new series. Best to you, fair winds.
