Building A Blown Pontiac Firebird Killer From A 185HP Smog Engine Assembly -Tony Angelo's Stay Tuned

Жыл бұрын

On this first episode of Stay Tuned, Tony Angelo introduces us to his Street Freak Pontiac Firebird, and dives deep into engine assembly. This mid-70's muscle car, hasn’t had an engine in its bay since the early 90’s - and the team was determined to change that. We start with a limp, 1975 185HP Smog Engine, and watch as Tony and the team transform it into a 462 cubic inch, stroker monster. At the end of the episode, with the help of a bunch of Butler Performance parts, this thing is ready to eat boost and kill tires!
Will this Firebird finally earn its wild looking stripes, and become a Pontiac performance killer on the drag strip? Stay Tuned, as ultimate car guy Tony Angelo and his buddies, build down and dirty hot rods with one goal in mind-maximum fun.

Those Pontiac solid engine mounts can be a bear to line up. I found that loosening up the bolts that hold the mounts to the engine and loosening the bolts that attach the frame mounts can help you get that long through bolt in there. With that much power you might start considering tightening up the chassis. At a minimum check the body mounts - on an old firebird they are usually completely rotted out. Nice build Tony!

Wow, Stay Tuned as made it onto Hagerty! Congrats, Tony and crew! This Firebird is one of my favorite builds happening on KZbin right now. Regarding engine here, us Pontiac people typically use a cork or fiber perimeter gasket for the valley pan seal, not RTV. And the intake fitment issue is usually caused by interference between the underside of the the intake runner ports when used with an aftermarket valley pan (as seen here). Typically you can get things to fit by grinding away a little bit of the runner port material and/or the valley pan, but you don't need to shave the actual mating surface of the intake.
@StayTunedTA
@StayTunedTA Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that would have been better, a perimeter gasket, I think this was an Butler valley pan and just silicon was recommended. I just used WAY too much. I did clearance the valley pan for the runners, but they still wouldn't fit, once the intake was decked it did go on pretty happily. We took 25 thousandths off the heads, and that may have been the issue.

Great stuff an actual Pontiac engine being featured . SWEET! Butler is the absolute best place for Pontiac parts. I run a 1972 455HO, it has old school TRW L2394 pistons from the early 70s. I needed rings , no where to be found. Called Butler explained what piston I was running , he knew about them and had the correct ring set. He also explained to me that the domes on my pistons were old school tech and there are much better options. Parts and info. BUTLER ROCKS! I'm still running the engine and it's badass. Great show , subbed.👍👍🏁🏁

Watching this is giving me PTSD about my long gone 70-1/2 Firebird that I put a 400 in from a 69 GTO. Those Pontiac motors are HEAVY. I was using a 2:1 chain hoist lifring from a think branch on a maple tree in my driveway. OSHA not having been invented yet. And I weighed 100lb wet. Then, those damn Blackjack headers would never fit right and the outer tubes only had 1 bolt for each port and 2 for the center 2 ports, so 4 bolts for each side. Leaked constantly, even with thick gadgets. I was wondering what had happened to this car, as I watched Tonyy's first installment months ago. Glad Hagarty picked up his channel. He's a great host and explains things well. Also love the cheesy sound effects and cuts. makes it feel more homey. Keep up the good work guys.
