Personally, I don't care. The client has already agreed to allow filming for the building of the property, I don't think they need to be filmed from the outset or that it's necessary to go into the whole planning & drawing phase. Kyle has already told us the dimensions of the property in this first video, I'm quite willing to wait till it's completed to see the final outcome. In fact, I think it's better this way. But each to their own I suppose ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also, Retired Navy, starting from scratch with 6 acres on midcoast Maine property, 3acres untouched for 150 yrs. Building 500’ gravel driveway, and garage/shop for KUBOTA BX maint. DIY as much as possible. I will do driveway build and garage site prep. Since soil/overburden is sand, I plan to dig everything out, down to ledge, fill back in with “Rip-Rap”, 4-6” stone. Otherwise, freshwater springs and gravity will destroy driveway over time. Freshwater springs drain into ocean.

Vacuum the gravel and fine dirt out with a decent size industrial shop vacuum and 60mm sewer pipe . Works a treat .

It doesn’t matter how many buildings you build on this channel, I still watch every one. I’m helping my uncle build some buildings now and went back to find how you punch the steel so I could try to talk him into trying it. The exact awl you used in that video isn’t available at menards anymore but I think they have a similar one I’m going to pick up on the way out tomorrow. Great content that makes me want to try building a post frame myself.

Great videos. Thank you. Story Pole again with dimensions, mock placement of girts-fascia boards-fascia, overhangs-etc., maybe use a white board too, while on the ground. There are a couple of procedures that are crucial, so I don’t mind repeats of squaring of layouts, plumbing walls with chains, squaring roofs at the trusses with chains, adjusting the span between the trusses along the roof line while installing roof sheathing, door and window placement relative to metal flats and hills. If a number is mentioned, show its derivation. Maybe add details with narration during editing. However, I do respect your time, these are only suggestions.

Watching you load everything up on the various trailers, and the number of trips it takes to get everything you need to the worksite just to begin a project is why I never question a contractor's mobilization costs. So much prep work! And cheaping out on it (from an owner's perspective) usually means the contractor is trying to make up for that prep time somewhere else.

I spent 25 years in the Carpenters and Joiners Union Local #1. I spent almost 3 years on a Morton Building erection crew. I'd like to have you deep dive on all the framing. I'm old and would like to build myself a small Barndominium with T-111 for exterior wooden (painted barn red, of course) cladding and a raised seam roof. My father was a past President of A.S.H.R.A.E. and taught me the actual effective use of "R" factors so I believe I can build in post frame a significantly efficient structure.

When drilling in loose fill you can use a 5’ piece of flat bar. Drill a hole on one end for center and two holes on the other side spaced out. Spacing doesn’t matter much but 2’ should work. Set the center hole of the bar on the center of the shaft before you start drilling and drive two pins in the ground in the holes at the other end. Pick the bar up and drill. After clearing the auger you can reset the bar on the pins and you’ll have center again. You can also use the bar to check plumb and depth. Just make sure the pins aren’t touched before your shaft is done.

I would love to see how you do post frame construction with a basement. I know post frame don’t typically have a basement but I remember you mentioning a few times that you have done it in the past. The thing I wonder about most is how you would handle floor joist/beams that butt up against posts and don’t have the full basement wall to sit on? Are there hangers that could be used in those situations?

Would depend if you're spanning the whole structure or if it's in-layed inside of the structure. You'd have to engineer the walls to carry the load of the building.

I live in Prospect CT 12 miles north of New Haven, Ijust dug out 10 12" tubes 42" deep with my Backhoe 3 of the holes I hit boulders I couldnt move so i had to drill and pin them cause a 6ft wide rock Im not moving or tearing up my yard to dig deeper and move the rock. I put my shovel in the ground Im hitting a rock EVERY TIME!!!!

Would love to see “Post Frame 101: Basics of Post Frame Framing” in the same vein of MattBangsWood’s “Carpentry 101: Basics of Wood Framing”. The terminology and layout is different and it’d be awesome to have a video that lays out the basics all in one place. “Here’s the name of each framing member. Each post is 6x6 and 8ft apart.” Etc. Would be really helpful for post frame style construction as a whole!

From the perspective of someone that plans to build something similar in the not too distant future, I'd really appreciate you covering some of the small details you intentionally plan out/set up/prep in advance and why, and what happens if you don't. As a DIYer, there's always at least one small thing at the end of a project I look at and say to myself "I should've done that before I did this other thing" or notice something that I just completely didn't account for when I initially plan through the project. I've watched a ton of your videos and I don't recall ever seeing one, but do you guys have any kind of (general or specific to the job) checklist that you use as you go?

I watch and rewatch your videos while washing dishes and putting on makeup for work. We're hunting for a patch of dirt on Whidbey Island and have been inspired by the quality work you do, your humor, honesty and humility is a bonus. You're very helpful and informative. We've renovated 3 houses in our life but we want to build what we know works for us rather than modify another person's ideas. What's one thing people later wish to change once their house is complete? Is it single story instead of 2 story? Size? The way it sits on the property / sun exposure?

Hey guys, see if you can get a hold of recycled concrete base rock next time. Water as you roller compact it and it compacts like a dream! The small amount of cement gets reactivated…but not so much that your auger won’t go right through it. You’ll find it will hold together just enough to solve your problems. Your holes should have very little loose material problems. We use it quite a bit under asphalt driveways and parking lots. It packs so nice…feels like cement…great to drive and work on, until time for asphalt. Cheaper than regular base rock too! Hope that helps…love your system! Not much of a call for it here in Silicon Valley though. 😕

I've always enjoyed your videos. A fascinating way to erect a building. A very smart move pouring the "anchors" that hold the Trusses. They should be much less intrusive than the "dead men" you brought in for that task on earlier jobs.

Love the videos keep it up and like other people said in the comments I could literally watch this over and over again. Doesn't matter if you've said it before some people like me need to hear it 10 times before I can get it imbedded in my brain lol. I do have a question I'm surprised you don't have to use a concrete vibrator to get all the air pockets out or even lay rebar inside of the pillars. Here in Manitoba Canada our frost line is 8 feet and we need to have concrete pillars minimum of 25 feet deep with rebar as well.

As an equipment operator who has done a lot of holes. I’ve success keeping the auger spinning slightly as you pull out of the whole. That is a lot of gravel though. Great video.

RR is one of my go-to Channels. Maine coast is ledge/bedrock, 4-5’ frost depth, garage/shop project. Looking at all your slab vs concrete post frame building techniques. Preparing for post hole digging to find exact ledge depth. SDS rotary drilling for rebar/epoxy everywhere. Question is still monolithic pour for garage vs elevated concrete posts. Thx for outstanding KZbin vids!

I have been on the very edge of my seat for sooo long. I have referred many of my favorite U Tubers here in New England to R&R. I'm tellin ya. I'd like to see a video pertaining to a DIY first-time builder. Someone who doesn't have all the awesome equipment. A run down on essential, must have, tools. What equipment to rent and best way to optimize that equipment. Best way to set trusses on a modest size building (30×40×12 for instance) with 2 people.

suggestions 1) use a laser on a tripod to shoot a beam down your centerline of columns so as you lift the auger in and out the beam hits the auger. or 2) have a temporary casing made that is slightly larger than your coil insert (sonotube?) about 2' long so when you encounter loose agg you can auger thru it and keeps it from caving in. push sonotube in and then pull temp casing out. this would have saved a lot of time just bailing rock from the bottom of the holes.

The auger drive could probably use an oil change, I think it’s just 80 or 90 wt gear oil. Nice work.
