I’m a first time grower in south central florida. I plan to do some autoflowers outside next week. Can I use the fox farms ocean forest and happy frog mixed or do I have to add anything else. And also do I have to add nuts later on or will the soil be enough to last them the 2 months of grow time?
@dalecoughlin34026 ай бұрын
@@jonathonkerby8155I would layer your soil, happy frog on top half, ocean forest for the bottom half, so by the time your plant is in veg and out of seedling stage it can get the ocean forest which it will need the nutrients by then. That will get you through the veg stage and into flower, probably could get a whole grow out of it if you don’t really care about yield, potency, etc., but if you do that mixture of soil and hit it with a top dress of some type of flower/bud booster ie, down to earth rose and flower mix, or dr earth bud and bloom booster then you will have what you need to get through flower and you will have done it organically. Also no cannabis plant goes from seed to harvest in two months autoflower or not, expect three +

love your videos. new to growing so they are very helpful. Why higher in phosphorus than nitrogen? Don't you want higher nitrogen in the beginning during the vegetative stage?
@user-asdfgh Жыл бұрын
I believe he puts the super soil in the bottom third of the pot. The super soil seems to be higher in phosphorus (4-6-2) than nitrogen, although with the worm castings, could be (5-6-2) since the worm castings are (1-0-0). In the latter half of the video he splits the soil in half before adding the tomato fertilizer and azomite. Therefore, the top two thirds of the soil have an NPK of roughly (1-0-0) because of the worm castings. I think the theory is that the veg stage will use up the top two thirds of the pot before eventually rooting down to the super soil once it’s ready to flower. I’m sure the NPK I mentioned isn’t exact but you get the idea. Hope that helped anyone out there.

@@user-asdfgh That helps a lot! Thanks for explaining that. Ive grown with fox farms and adjust the needs by top dressing but that's an interesting way to approach it. Any risk of loosing the benefits of the super soil on the bottom as water runs off over the veg state?
@user-asdfgh Жыл бұрын
@@BackBurnerKitchen well, I think top dressing is more beneficial when you water the plants in a traditional manner (from the top.) I personally have found great success through bottom watering. I just put the bottom of my pot on/in a plastic coaster and water the coaster. Although I do like to water just the base of the stem from the top every now and then to try to direct the roots downwards during mid/late veg. Before anything, I add a bit of peat moss to the soil medium. It helps the soil suck up the water from the bottom. Bottom watering seems to help prevent fungus gnats and mostly prevent the problem you brought up.

Whilst Ive been growing cannabis i noticed one day we needed pine needles so I went into the forest behind the set and started raking them up and noticed how rich the soil was, & as I was scraping the needles I was uncovering layers of the best soil rich in lots of Mycorrhizal Fungi in one of the layers and there was an abundance of it. I hit the mother-load as far as soils for growing. Salts build up in the soil over time, and growing organically in soil doesn't require flushing the root zone because flushing kills your soil microbes just like high salt content.

@macpaz6 ай бұрын
@@joegoddard9661yeah but will the phosphorus not be used up by the time the plant really requires it? All nutrients are added at the same time. I only see this recipe working out if you have a really slow releasing phosphorus fertilizer that you add at the beginning and that breaks down during veggie stage, so that the phosphorus becomes available during the first two weeks of flowing, which will be rewarded with an explosive boost in bud development.

He didn't add any beneficial microbes so it should be relatively stable. Honestly your natural inputs only need 4 weeks to breakdown and become available to the plants so his timeline is WAAAYYYYY longer than it needs to be. If you get a soil thermometer and monitor the internal temp, once the temp drops and stabilizes you can plant into it. The fear is that once you mix this and add water you activate the inputs and it cause heat as a reaction and you can cook your root zone, some mulch piles can reach upwards of 130 deg F, and I've witnessed hay barns spontaneously combust from the heat generated by the microbes and composting processes.

people overcomplicate stuff... Of course, there's more than one way to skin a cat in terms of creating your own mix, but jeez I've seen people using a dozen or more ingredients all happy thinking they're doing some good. Im a big fan of going simple, cheap, easy, sustainable and also mimicking nature as far as possible. All I use is 1/3 washed coco (use peat if that's local to you), 1/3 vermiculite and 1/3 compost, and bob's your uncle. It's the tried and true Mel's mix. As the third part for compost I like to use half leaf compost (leaf mould) and half homemade worm castings. Anything organic that you'd feed to your plants, you feed to the worms instead so that they can mineralize it first so that when the plants get the worm castings everything is bioavailable right off the bat. You can also mix in 5 ro 10% biochar or carbonized rice hull if you need extra aeration in tall pots that get too compacted at the bottom, and maybe a little wood ash every now and then for extra Ca, P and K, but that's it, but I prefer to feed the ashes to the worms first. Very few things in nature work as good as worm castings and leaf mould. That's how a forest was designed to work by nature. that's what plants are expecting to exist in the ground cos that's what they've been exposed to for millions of years. rotting things on the ground being eaten by worms and other critters, and an eventual forest fire that adds ash and charcoal to the mix. that's how forests bootstrap themselves into life without any input from outside, and fertility only increases over time. trees act like natural pumps, pumping nutrients from the ground way down below and then into the leaves and fruits which then fall down to the ground and rot and decay increasing the fertiility of the topsoil. it's not rocket science... mimic nature and you'll be fine.
