Lilly is in the fortunate situation to have access to some privately owned forest, if I remember correctly. So she gets to try out different shelter designs. I have neither the forest nor the time to build the shelters (envy), but I'll happily watch her (and many other bushcrafters) to learn about what approaches to take should I ever need a shelter. The most interesting video's for me are the re-visits to 'old' shelters, to see what worked and what didn't.

The more layers of brush, leaves, and moss, the better. ;) In the end, it should resemble a huge, almost shapeless, pile of brush and leaves, with an opening. ;) For winter, I'd recommend making the opening smaller, perhaps with a longer wind break along one side of the opening - almost like a fence or a wall. Watching a 'sexy librarian' do bushcraft is kinda mind-blowing, btw. :D Edit: Ignore the city folks in the comments. They have no idea what they're talking about. ;)

We did this type of shelter in the Canadian Armed Forces basic training and we used a manual pump, potable water fire extinguisher to keep the moss alive (if it is raining, this part is unnecessary). Great video as always Lilly!

Great video. Always in approach drip irrigation 3 things from tool. It's a knife, an axe and a saw. Many underestimate the advantage of a saw over an axe. But they are obvious. The saw tactically has no weight, and the chewing performance is much higher than that of the axe. Although the axe is also desirable. And without a knife, things get complicated. Although ideally you can do without the tool at all. But in this case, any construction is reduced to finding suitable parts, so that they have to be processed in the least way(!) Thanks for the demonstration of the saw in the case, for example, the construction of the shelter. And The fact that you, the girl, did it, speaks of the incomparable advantage of the saw. I, too, especially workers methods, for example, a view and production ceasefire primitive, give try wife and if she has is obtained, then believe this method one of the most effective, reliable and ordinary.

gurl I know u tearin it up but saw on the ground to save energy and will add safety as a result. take a minute to square away a way to pin both ends of the log ur sawing down, 2 trees properly spaced with a riser under one end of the piece ur cutting helps to steady the piece and make sure all ur saw energy is going into the cutting action, not a swaying action of the log. lots and lots of lost energy in moving the piece back and forth and not really cutting when u dont brace a log

@14 88 Not entirely a myth. Moss grows better in shady areas, so it tends to grow on the shady side of objects. That would tend to be the northern side in the Northern Hemisphere and the southern side in the Southern Hemisphere. I wouldn't use this as a sole indicator of direction, but it could help to very direction of your are questioning the accuracy of your compass. In other words, don't bet your life on moss. Diversify and verify.

Hi Lilly hope your well its been a few weeks here in wales uk weve had so far a very mild winter and ive been in my undergroung shelter on / off for nearly every weekend for 3 months now it seems like the teens cant find it even after the fall i see your busy as im catching up on your video's yes ive got a slingshot black widow with arm rest and added two elastics instead of one you dont have to pull it back so far as normal and if i hit a rabbit it tends to flip it in the air with 10 mm ball bearings i dont use snares you look trim and healthy all the best and bless you Stephen...

Very cool. 😎 had heard the old cottages with sod had the best roofs because the layer of dirt was saturated by the roots from the layer of grass - making a living, completely water-proof almost indestructible shelter. LOL.. we don’t have many (or any) sod roofs here in the US, but curious to know from those of you in Europe if there’s truth to that and how long did roofs last. Thanks for the vid Lilly!! Love watching you build and teach survival skills.

Fenwick There are still a few standing sod buildings in Western Nebraska, but they are gradually melting away. Remember soddies were temporary shelters.There are grass roots extending from roof to ground inside some of lthe building.

That's a really good pack. I purchased the same mountain pack from the Sportsman's Guide catalog back in the early 1990's. It has never failed me in any way after all those years of regular use. I actually bought three of them. I have two in storage that I have never used. You just have to love military surplus!
