Digging an unsupported hole in the bottom of an erosion ravine which you have dumped the spoil in as well, is asking for all sorts of trouble. The first rainstorm will cause the shelter to flood, and the hole collapse.

I'd be more worried about collapse than flood. If the structure collapses with you inside, there's little chance of escape as the weight of the soil would more than likely suffocate you. I've done my fair share of "shoring up" to know it doesn't look too safe, especially in sandy soil.

This kind of stuff comes up all the time. These kinds of shelters are temporary, to provide seasonal shelter when exploiting a seasonal resource. If you want to build a permanent shelter, build a house, in town, with plumbing and a power connection.

Flat South Carolina sand. It's flat the whole coastline and close to 100 miles inland. And sand, and more sand. Then about 3feet down is a layer that's almost as hard as concrete. Called gumbo.

wait what happens when it rains? that's dug in at the base of a water channel and you've got your floor below ground level. Any water coming in is going to flood the hell out of that, and the green grass tells me the ground is wet so it it's rained recently when you did this.

As a survivalist it's a very cool structure but how realistic is it when your in a ravine where you will get flooded with a one day rain storm. A good drainage system is a must for this structure. I'm not sure how realistic this is. If it was on high ground I would give it 100% blessing but I don't like the location, sorry 🙏

Hola hermano lindo refugio.. una sugerencia y le pido disculpas.. la parte que vas dormir un poco más profundo..no vas dormir bien.. otra estás entre dos bajadas.. cuando llueva estás en riesgo..y una tercera..yo pondría dos horcones dentro por las dudas y hace como un arco.de fútbol primero y después palos gruesos clavado en la pared...y una escalera de madera para subir en la barranca veo que es resbaloso y cuando llueva no podrás subir ..es un sugerencia pero tú idea es excelente como refugio.. abrazo grande desde Tucumán Argentina.

Did you not know this was a really dangerous thing to do? Please change your description and title. This should read, "How NOT to build a death trap." Seriously, I am not being mean. There are so many people who will see this, not read the comments and attempt it. This is dangerous and it is definitely NOT a cave. A cave or cavern is a natural void in the ground, specifically a space large enough for a human to enter. Caves often form by the weathering of rock and often extend deep underground. Wikipedia

Yes i live on the outskirt of a small town here in South Africa with the Drakensburg mountains not too far away, in a bug out situation thats where i'd be headed, as a ex deffence force soldier i have all the skills for survival because bush life was our thing in the Angolan bush war, a cave is a good idea but it also comes with a few problems like collapsing or filling up with water in a big rain, espeacialy when the soil is soft as with this one ur digging, but there are ways around that too and i guess ur not finnished yet right ? ✌, thats a beutifull area btw, perfect as long as theres water and a wooded area near-by 👌

I think it's important people get out and try different survival techniques because I think outdoor survival is highly undervalued and should be attempted and perfected (as much as it can be) by everyone. I think it's as important as learning or having a means of self-defense against bad guys, except the "bad guy" is nature in the case of outdoor survival. However, I also think it's important that you're at least somewhat educated by an expert before you do it yourself, and before you post videos of it. Why? Because you may not realize something important. The thing that stood out most to me in this video is that you shouldn't build in a valley or ravine. 1) that's where the coldest air tends to settle, which is bad during winter time, 2) you'll get very little wind when you want it, which is bad during the summer time, and 3) It's a guarantee that building at level with the bottom of the ravine is going to flood your shelter when the rains come. You'll be right in the way of a small creek (at best) and a turbulent river (at worst). And if you post videos of it, and the person learning from you also doesn't know any better, you've taught them something that's potentially dangerous.
