It is great to finally see someone moving to Panama from abroad and actually befriending locals and becoming part of the community. Thank you for not being yet another person who just buys a condo in Coronado. haha Also, love the house! Can't wait to see how it comes together. My wife and I plan to build a cob home on our property here in Arkansas, USA and always appreciate getting inspired by the ideas others have!

So happy you love what I share! We had to save for a while as well before beginning construction. The good thing about natural homes is you can do them a little at a time. Best of luck with your project!

Medam please inform me about mixing of mud with avoiding of insects. Like bloodbugger.

Adding calcium hydroxide/lime helps to deter insects, as well as borax. However, a lime plaster base and finishing plaster is the best way!

with a chop saw the bamboo can be cut to 18 to 24-in links and the chords can be laid directly in the Adobe horizontally. raised beds made of rock and Cellular concrete will wrap around all the homes making the best use of space growing essentials. Bamboo bales are not even on the seen yet Long bast hemp fibers will also be a useful fiber replacement for straw.

I just learned about cob houses and they're so beautiful. I just bought land in OK, USA and was planning on building a brick house since Im in the heart of tornado valley. I want to build somwthing sturdy. But i love the way cob houses look. Its a building technique you dont see a lot around here. Do you know how they would hold up against heavy winds associated with tornados? I figured it must be compairable to brick, since they are both made of similar material, but of course, the way they formed and assembled are very different.
@turiyapanama Жыл бұрын
So happy to hear you are interested in cob! There are many ways to build them. Ones that are formed with sun-dried adobe bricks would not be recommended for high winds. I recommend a system with internal reinforcement. The bamboo cage we use is rooted into the ground and gives the cob something to grab onto. This technique is similar to what they call wattle and daub. So I would start researching there! The key with high winds will be internal reinforcement for the wall material and then also secure framing/pillars to support the roof. Our support pillars are buried 4 feet into the ground! Hope this helps!

Do you have to treat the bamboo
@StylosetPapier6 ай бұрын
You embedded the bamboo posts into the earth, possibly exposing end-grain to moisture-wicking and rot. I wonder if that is happening.
@Eliz2011abc2 жыл бұрын
This is lovely. But the untreated bamboo will rot over time and putting green bamboo directly into soil without any protection will hasten that. Coating the bottom of the bamboo with tar to protect it is a cost effective method. Murali-Rama house (The Vedic Way channel on KZbin) is the best natural build, using bamboo I've seen. He also explains how to treat the bamboo before use. There're other videos that show how to treat whole bamboo that's not being cut into strips. I've watched this video a lot 😊, it's one of my favorites.

Thank you for sharing! We did this first home as the locals have done it which uses a few different methods to help prolong it. I see many homes done this way that are over 200 years old in this region, which surprised me! First is cutting it during the menguante period (3 days before the new moon) which makes the bamboo drier and more resistant. And the type of bamboo is important. This is a bitter bamboo variety. With these two things, the homes here last lifetimes. However, I do think extra precautions and treatments like the ones you mention are great to incorporate in addition, such as borate treatment.

From the SE US, if we don’t have bamboo available would hardwood work? Would there be something I would need to do to prep other than let it dry out?
@turiyapanama Жыл бұрын
Yes! Termite resistant hardwood should work, without treatment! Cedar and teak are great
@JoeRusso-z4p4 ай бұрын
What do you do about termites?
@turiyapanama4 ай бұрын
@JoeRusso-z4p we use only the heart of cedar, mahogany, and corotu woods! Which I coat in Milk Paint's Half and Half blend for extra protection that's still natural
@jadegreen15547 ай бұрын
Doesnt the bamboo rot or weevil/termite?
@turiyapanama7 ай бұрын
I would've thought so! But these homes last 200+ yrs! The variety of bamboo used is a green type (not guadua) and is cut during the 5 days before the new moon.
