I know you don't care, but the reason you don't solder connections (just solder) is because of heat. If things heat up, you have nothing there, the wire is perfectly able to get loose and fall off and touch metal. I know, 1 in 1000 etc. But the point still stands. You crimp and solder. In today's world where a decent hydraulic crimper and die set cost less than a battery, there's just no excuse to do things properly, which is to do both. Solder is not something you want current to go through, it's just a binder. You want metal contact between the different things, in this particular case, solder is just an element to take up gaps and futher increase the structure of the connection. Just my 2 cents.
@KarlEller
@KarlEller 6 ай бұрын
If it's getting hot enough to melt the solder, you're going to have much bigger problems than a connection coming loose, like the fact that your car is on fire. The issue with soldered connections that I have always been told about is that as it wicks up into the wire, it creates a stiff section that as the wire bends and flexes, can be a fatigue point. Copper work hardens as it bends, and eventually the constant bending will cause it to split at the solder point. Having said that, we're talking over decades of constant use, and proper wire management will reduce the potential bending to the point where it isn't really a factor 🤷‍♂

Magnificent build and this example makes me think your new venture will do well. Just a tip for those who are looking at going to lithium , inspired by your project, there are many cheap eBay batteries about and their rated capacity are often over stated. Simple rule of thumb is -divide the rated capacity by 10 and that’s how much the battery should weigh . In your case 240 ah should weigh 24 kg , and it did. Anything significantly lighter means the battery has been manufactured with less cells than required to give the stated capacity. I was a victim . My first battery was rated 100ah and weighed 7.5kg. When I tested the battery it only had 78ah capacity. Keep up the great vid content. Never a boring moment with Aussie arvos.

Pretty sweet build. Please put covers over those battery lugs; you don’t want to drop in a camp chair and find it makes a path to ground! Also; I really recommend changing the fridge switch to a covered switch. Last thing you want is to have someone stuff a jumper down the back of the chair as it warms up , only to discover at the end of the day your fridge has bee off for the last 8 hours..

I would recommend a cover over the entire open back, but at least the lugs and all 12+ connection points.

A tip which I'm guessing you already know, but may be useful for others. A normal household power socket is rated to use 2,400watts of power. Some items around your house can draw that sort of load, like a microwave or electric kettle or arc welder. I'd personally go for a 2,500w inverter at minimum for general usage or 3,700w if you want a 15amp socket. They each have 100w more capacity than their sockets are rated for, but it's always better to avoid running at 100% capacity. Inverters are also temperature sensitive, their rated output is at a set temperature (25 degrees with Victron gear) and output reduces at higher temps.

The 75ah AGM only gives about 35 to 40 ah before the battery needs to be charged. So a 240ah LIFEPO4 battery is actually 5 to 6 times the capacity.

Dan! Protip for having that much capacity. If you want it to be 'useable' without having to turn your car on to charge it. Try to budget 2watts of solar per amphour of battery capacity you have. So in order to be fully self sufficient without the need to ever charge the battery via alternator you'd need 480watts of solar. That sounds like a lot but you've kinda dug yourself into that hole by buying such a large battery haha. You can obviously get away with less if you plan on doing a mix of driving/solar. Just something to think about

Very nice build. If it were mine, I'd want a cover on the back to protect from dust/debris/water coming over the backseat. A couple holes in it covered with speaker covers would be a clean look, and add some dust mesh over the existing air holes to keep crud out of the system.

You might want to put a cover over the exposed terminals. You don't wanna risk any piece of metal slipping down behind the seat and shorting it out to start a fire. Other than that great use of the dead space. I mounted my second battery behind the rear wheel up within the tub of my ute and built a similar power system to what you have that I fitted within my tub rack. It's nice and slim and takes up bugger all room plus the battery is using up dead space. I mounted my air compressor in the same spot on the other side.

As always Dan awesome build, just a few things I would have changed, painted the cage black, used black screws for the iTech controller as the silver ones are OCD nightmare 😂😂, and would have put a pigtail on the negative lead to the shunt, it was a bit too short and tight for my liking, other than that excellent build and explanation.
