Guys it is great to see the F550 build again and also the work on the flatbed. Awesome job!! Do something cool on the sides of the bed so it's not just a flatbed, you guys are creative and I know you will come up with something awesome. Please keep up the great work and keep your Pops in the videos.
@joevergnetti7673 жыл бұрын
Love that you got everyone in on it, especially pops!! I’d think the shear strength of 8 bolts would be fine as opposed to needing extra weld. That way there’s slight flex allowed…
@mfc45913 жыл бұрын
Those are strong bolts if they are HT for the plate holding the hitch, I don't think there is any need to weld, and on top of that I have never liked welding to a chassis. Some manufacturers actually forbid it ! You will have a door and after the first use of the hitch I would recommend checking the bolt tightness and then periodically after that. Its nice to have a big strong family to shift stuff around. Good welding skills everyone, nice job.

It's looking solid ! For the center,I'd lay the 2x3" sideways and weld down the sides of it.The plates can expand a hair when hot.I'd also prefer to counter-sink screws in all the plates onto the frame.When you decide to modify under,or around the frame,you'll have easier access.2x2"angle steel on the rear side of the access plate to the 5th-wheel with tapped holes for screws to hold it down,and a piano hinge on the front will let you do different holes in the plate and deck to hold it open.
@bryduhbikeguy3 жыл бұрын
...But,what do I know about whether you want to be able to change the decking for different uses easily?You may want straps welded to the frame and holes cut for removable 'stake-truck' like bars,and a rack that bolts on?

Diamond plate across the rear, shackles welded on for towing and a license plate mount, along with Mustang taillights. Storage compartments down the undersides between the cab and wheels.
@USAF993 жыл бұрын
As long as those bolts are grade 8 or better it should be fine-- however, there's nothing that says you can't weld the plate to the bed, it ain't gonna hurt anything other than removability. If you plan on keeping that plate with that bed forever, lay down some dimes for piece of mind. Any flex will be absorbed by the suspension, the bed needs to be solid. Flex in the bed creates weak spots, specifically at your welds. If its solid, no weak spots.

When your drilling big ass holes like that get a good old fashioned plug in drill not a battery one. People get so use to using battery powered drills , they forget how powerful an old Milwaukee plug in drill is.

Do one solid piece. The only reason you want a separate piece is if you want to swap out the hitch for a new type of hook up. Myndad had the gooseneck, but also a fifth wheel and even a roller ball for a car trailer. Very weird device. But 90 of the time it was a gooseneck and he had it pinned with 3 lag bolts, but he always worried it could shear the pins.
@deadslow2013 жыл бұрын
The problem is that chassis is not a solid piece. That is why you do not weld to it.

Some great welding by all the boys and dad as well. Paint the frame everywhere before welding the sheet on top. Also paint the sheet silver/grey that way you won't see any scratches when you will use the tray or the hitch, and end up scratching it. If you could powder coat the whole frame and tray that would be even better.

If all eight bolts are grade 8, welding it up won't add much. Yuri, you do realize the man who,I'm thinking really taught you how to weld just handed you the shop "weld it" title with that goober snot- which very fortunately can easily be hidden. It' a lot easier to blow a vertical weld, I'm thinkin'. Then the "machine", Ben, put a whack on it- I'd keep your practice up- you are traveling in some tough company! FR

I wouldn’t weld it as if it flips and the neck comes off say the knuckle brakes you can just take it change it but up front I would put a tool box just to take what you need and on the other side of the box something to put two wheel it wouldn’t be the first time iv seen a double blow out and as for the bed weld it first then cut the hatch then that way you know it will be spot on Mark it from under the truck if you can if not looks like you will have to do it from on top but even still as you got it in two bit take one bit off Mark it put the other bit on Mark the other side and yes take the first bit you marked off to do it lmao I seen ppl try all kinds of things over the years but remember it’s called k.i.s.s keep it simple stupid lol all the best man hope it helps

Don't weld the hitch to the frame. Just use high tensile bolts with locknuts.
@BrucePierson3 жыл бұрын
Hey Yuri, don't do stupid things like that, getting under the truck wheels with the truck hanging from the lift. You don't take chances like that, because if the weld happened to break, you'd be in hospital for weeks if not longer. Not to mention you could be permanently disabled. Safety first. Nobody wants to see you get hurt!
@BrucePierson3 жыл бұрын
That was a massive amount of work removing the rust from the frame. Would have been better to use galvanised RHS.

@morgansword3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely never weld a hitch into the frame work. Its a flex point even though you don't realize it. I do know one thing.... its way overkill on crossmembers... you could haul a D6 cat dozer on that bed... about four or more times stronger than the truck. I have done thousands of different builds like your flatbed and never once that strong, as for every pound added takes away the load limits of what your going to haul... just saying.
