Building a Dovetailed Wooden Box

This is the second part of a two part series following a video on hand cutting dovetails on how I finish making a wooden box out of walnut. Includes attaching the top and planing an arch top on it. I then cut the top off and sand it for a finish. For a finish, I use Waterlox and then attach the brass hardware and line with felt. Enjoy!

I've been working on a jewelry box for my wife and constantly dwelling on what I'm going to do for a lid...you've just saved me! The box is already made of dovetailed walnut and spalted birch, so I'll probably even use the same figured walnut you did for the top and saw right through the whole box once it's glued on. Finding this video made my day.

I was a meticulous arranger of artistic burnt clay products (bricklayer) but I have to say you are meticulous at just about everything wood and metal. Looking for the finishing of the furnace. And I agree this has helped take my mind off some real problems we've been having with a move to the other end of our county. Water leaks, skirting, and just getting tired too quick. Thanks Keith, Greg. P.S. I like that catty cornered arrangement of the screws. ( ha ha )

Lovely piece of work, Keith. Nicely done. Reminds me of when I worked for a pipe organ builder when I made hundreds of wooden organ pipes. We glued them up on all four sides as well as top and bottom and then cut off the top to whatever length was needed depending on the pitch of that particular pipe. Mostly I used poplar or white oak, depending if they were interior or facade pipes. Thanks for sharing... I may have to go make a box or two now.

+Rick L When I got married, my wife wanted furniture for the house. Me being the cheap person that I am did not want to spend a fortune on over priced furniture made out of particle board so I instead spent a fortune on outfitting a wood shop and started building my own furniture. While I did work professionally as a machinist for several years right out of high school, I have never worked professionally as a woodworker - it is more of a hobby and passion, similar to the machine shop work I do now.

Very nice box. I love black walnut. It is a wood that definitely should be re purposed when harvested. That figure looks like marble cake. Keith, very nice work on this handmade wooden box! As I started watching, there was something in view that looked very familiar to me. It was your hand plane. Hello Keith, Very nice looking box and beautiful wood you used for it, and I also like the natural texture of wood. Sometimes I'm getting really sad to see people putting colored paint on nice wood. When you made that top side I thought you forgot that there has to be an opening to put things in. Afterwards it is a very handy idea to cut of the top and getting a very nice result. Again an very interesting video especially because I also work a lot with wood but never had used those dovetails. Maybe I gonna try it out and also make a box like you did pure for learning out. Many greetings from Roel !

Nice job. When cutting off the tops I was taught a little different method. I set the blade just low enough that it doesn't cut all the way through but instead purposely stop short and finish the cut with a knife. Won't need shims or clamps. After which a little light sanding which your going to do anyway.

The figure on the top really came out nice Keith. Much better than I thought it would. The hinges might not have been my first choice, but I'm not the one building it. It's going to be a great box for that vise. Add up just the hours that have gone into the vise and now your box and that's going to be a very high value bit of tooling. Almost too nice to use. I hope whoever is picked will remember all the work that went into this years WIYB giveaway.

+Turning Point I usually use a higher end hing on things like jewelry boxes, but I think that the ones that I used look fine and will get the job done. The vise that goes inside is the most important part.

+Keith Rucker - VintageMachinery.org True, it's just that they don't match the quality of your hand cut dovetails and the high end figure of the wood on the top that's all. Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% fine with what you chose. Your box and the hinges are a hell of a lot better than the storage boxes you get today even on some pretty pricey tooling and metrology equipment.

+Rollie Kelly I actually went though a phase some years ago where I did all my work totally using hand tools. It was a good exercise in becoming a better craftsman, but I really missed using my machines. Now days, I use both hand tools and machinery!

Fabulous job Keith, looks beautifully finished throughout. I just pray that it is not damaged in any way whilst in transit to Brad - I've seen what the US Postal Service or some carriers can do to destroy, damage or lose stuff from other machinist's videos!!

Keith Nice work. When planning flush, do your end grain first so if you have any blow out, it is hopefully in your waste stock. Great stuff though. Keep it coming

Keith . . . You should go into furniture making. That box was beautiful! You take woodworking seriously. A Biesmeyer fence on your table saw! I used to install those when I worked as a tech installing and repairing professional woodworking machines. That's why I hate the jointer -- one took the side of my left ring finger off. It was carelessness on my part. Fortunately, there was a plastic surgeon at the emergency room. He harvested some skin from my arm and put it on my finger. ... Enough rambling. Thanks for sharing your video. Do you do Gerstner-style machinist tool boxes? :-) Have a good one! Dave

Keith, I hope you don't mind if I share a trick I was taught by a woodworker long ago for cutting off box lids. He made custom rifle cases from mahogany. He set his saw blade just about 1/32" shy of cutting all the way through the sides. He made all 4 cuts, the thin part left at the bottom of the kerf holding the lid in place. He then took a utility knife and just sliced through the wood to separate the lid. About few minutes on the abrasive paper on a flat surface (just as you did) finished the job. I am not familiar with Waterlox, I will give it a try. It sure made the figure pop. Thanks for the video, very interesting.

+Ian Butler I have used that method as well, but I have found that the shims give you just as good as a cut and it requires less work - and I am all about less work!

I like to pre-drill for brass screws and use a little bee's wax myself. It only took one time for me to twist a brass screw off in an almost finished piece to remember to never do that again.

I assumed you would run the mating surfaces over a jointer instead of lapping. Does lapping give a better result?
@NGinuity
@NGinuity 9 жыл бұрын
+russtuff There are two different grain directions (and dead space) and a jointer isn't ideal. Lapping is nice and easy with controllable results.
@VintageMachinery
@VintageMachinery 9 жыл бұрын
+russtuff +NGinuity already answered this one - you would not want to run your jointer across the grain as you would on two of the four pieces so lapping is a better option.

I feel that the students learned exactly what the wood felt like as it came into shape, and that is something that theory just can't convey.

+Doug Rundell All good lessons - he made sure that the job was done right, kept us busy and out of trouble, and it was also a lesson in patience which taught us to not get in a hurry. While it might have been frustrating at the time, if I were a shop teacher I would probably do the same thing.
