I love figs as well and so does my grandson, which is why I began planting fruit trees and shrubs, vines, etc in the first place. My goal now is to have at least one of every fig I can find and plant. Propagating them from cuttings is super easy and how I got my first fig trees, from cuttings of an over 50 year old fig tree that belonged to my wife's grandparents.
@farleyschmackums2 ай бұрын
I’ve been propagating figs from cuttings for many years. All different varieties, and what I found is, when propagated from cuttings, the more robust a cutting the quicker it grows into a substantially sizable tree. This past March, I put several cuttings in the ground. Literally just hammered them into the ground in March and let them fend for themselves. No watering, no care at all lol. One of those cuttings grew into a tree of 5 foot tall, multi branched and had figs on it by summertime! That cutting in particular was about 14 inches long and an inch and a half diameter. Figs are great fruit trees!
@thatguychris56542 ай бұрын
This is my first year having a fig tree. Planted the 6 inch twig like I do all my fruit trees: - Biochar and terracotta balls in bottom of hole with splash of "yellow nitrogen water" - Then a small layer of finished compost. - I plant the tree into that but about 1 inch above grade. - Cover a 3 foot radius circle around tree with 2 inches of leaf mold and a tad of sponge wood. - Top of with another inch or so of fresh leaf litter as a mulch. This creates the fungus rich soil trees need for a robust root system. Seemed to work on the fig planted this spring. Grew to 6 foot, 4 stalks coming out of base, and desperately trying to fruit before the first frost (soon) with loaded down branches. Hope this variety is as hardy as they claim 🤞
@wordwalkermomma42 ай бұрын
I divided the roots and shared with daughters, and YES, they put on the fastest growth... but also, small cuttings dipped in rooting hormone will sprout roots quickly, for gifts, or if you want an orchard full.😁

Where I live, there are a few full-sized fig trees from the previous owners. Last year, I was able to get enough to dehydrate I think 4 or 5 quarts. I've used some for my rabbits as snacks during the winter or once when we couldn't get feed from the feed store. I need to go harvest more, actually. Figs are one of my favorite foods.

That fish emulsion is awesome stuff. When I used it on my last garden I had tomato plants that were over 10 feet tall and loaded with fruit. My okra grew to over 8 feet tall and were also loaded. Peppers loved it also. I did the same. I just poured about a half cup in a 5 gallon bucket and filled it with water and gave all the plants a drink about every two weeks. You can get it in a quart or by the gallon at your local big box hardware store. Thanks Zack.

Black mission, Brown turkey, Tiger, Pete's honey & Desert kings. I'm excited now!!

As far as propagating figs , have you tried layering ? It easier and faster than cuttings but you don't 'shock' the main plant. Just another method that I have found to be very effective without having to worry about keeping cuttings watered or your mother plant going into shock. Love the show !! You offer an encyclopedia of knowledge easy for all to understand. Keep up the great work !!! God bless❤

I took a cutting from my Louisiana mother-in-law's fig tree that had rooted from a branch that rested on the ground. It had roots, a stalk about 10 inches high, and 2 leaves. I planted it in my Texas Gulf Coast backyard and hoped for the best. A month later, it had only one leaf, then no leaves. It was just a 10-inch twig in the ground for a year and a half, then the next spring it took of like Jack's bean stalk (straight up over 10 feet tall)!! There were no branches! Baffled by this odd growth, I cut the top off 4 feet above ground. Then came branches, and 3 years later, it was 12 feet tall and 12 feet in diameter and loaded with figs. I really miss that fig tree since moving to NW Arizona. The winters here are too harsh, and the summers are too dry to grow figs like that. The best I can hope for is a bush about 4 feet tall. We have four 50-foot rows of Okra thriving and continuously producing pods. Running out of jars and space for pickled Okra, frozen cut Okra, fried Okra, etc. If only Okra tasted like figs!!
