Kelly Station has become a mystical place for me here in Pennsylvania! As I was feeding the birds this morning I kept humming it whistling that Kelly Station theme song, which is a Lovely catchy tune indeed! If I ever get a flintlock made I’ll have to visit with something to defend of course. Three cap and ball but no flintlock! The artistry and craftsmanship of the period rifles and muskets is to be admired. Today the artistry has fallen by the wayside on many things today and why I’ve always been in Love with the 18th century. It didn’t matter how common the tool for the task, spirit of the soul was made into the item. Like a butter mold, it could have been a plain mold but often carved patterns were carved in to give that butter a far more pleasant appearance. I’ve seen wooden spools used to replace a knob or a foot on an antique that were adorned in some way, just to make it a wee bit nicer. We humans have a creativity that separates us from the other two, four and six leggeds. But even the winged and swimming people you can find some degree of creativity. An Eagles nest seems a bit of a hodge podge lodge but check out their fishing! We dig into a fine apple pie but look at some of the art work made of crusts. It doesn’t last long but the Love that creates it never ends. And I will swear to you right now, that if the progress of Kelly’s Station would be applied to governments? Well we’d want for nothing I recon! So my binge watching of K.S since about 4:30 this morning has made me coffee most pleasant. I even lifted my cup with you Fellers by the hearth in the gun shop! So what a great and inspiring start to this Monday in November. This place is in the woods is made better in the watching of Spirit Built Kelly’s Station! Many Thanks and Blessings and a Very Cozy Winter! DaveyJO in Lancaster County Pennsylvania

I had a good chuckle when Peter said that Bob is the only guy that visits the fort that doesn't think I'm certifiable. That reminds me of Ron Brimer, a co-worker at Georgia Public Television, back in the mid 80's. Ron was the head of the art department at GPTV and he used to show me the flintlocks he made for other people. He made some beautiful swamped barreled, curly oak stocks which were works of art. Someone told me that he passed away. He was the best builder of flintlock rifles I've every seen. Makes my Pedersoli flinter look cheap. Do you use dead soft lead for your balls? I do. I mentioned I had a 1700's horn. I'm not sure how to date it. I could be an early 1800's horn. I don't know. However, it's not a new horn made to look like an old horn. I will take your advice and not touch it. I really enjoy your videos! I remember all the lakes in Ontario. I was travelling from Rhode Island to Alaska 50 years ago. I purchased two TVM flintlocks about a year ago. One was an Early Virginia in 58 cal and the other was a Southern rifle in 40 cal. I haven't had the time to shoot them, but I will soon.
@TheWoodlandEscapeАй бұрын
You’ll have to let us know how those rifles shoot! As to dating a horn, it’s pretty much impossible. The percussion came out in. The 1820, but many people continued to use flintlocks for a few more decades. I too have an original with no marking, so it could possibly date back to the 1700’s, but more than likely 1800’s.

Stupid question over here! When you were outlining the area around the trigger guard you were using a wood graphite pencil. Did they have graphite(ish) pencils in the 18th century? I know ink was used but were there some kind of markers or other pencil like things?
@augustcook5537Ай бұрын
You can use small pieces of charcoal, like from your fireplace or stove. That'd be the easiest, if not always the most precise. Also using the point of a small knife to trace out your shape will work too. You can even darken the line with powdered charcoal. Hope that helps somewhat
@TheWoodlandEscapeАй бұрын
They did have a thing call a crayol, which was a small brass tube with graphite held inside. I’m not sure and have no documentation, but I’m thinking that is where the word crayon comes from. A sharp knife is also a good marker.
