Man, it is really funny because today I put in the end posts for a 39 ft line. In New Zealand they don't see the end rachets so I have a strainer rachets for the two wires. I am going to have five plants with 6 feet spacing. Using some line posts called warantahs down here. It is virtually a copy of yours in the vid, with the two wires,2ft and 5 ft apart. I had a 10 ft post so I had to put it 2.5 ft ,I should have got a 8 ft, just had to dig to get in 1/3. But it is going to be the same height above ground(5.5ft). I am putting in the grapes in September which is our spring in the southern hemisphere. I have the interim to use for preparing the soil. Thank you.

How are these holding up? Do you cement the wooden supports in? Is the wire vice extremely difficult to tighten each year? My neighbor recommended a crank setup, but the vice would be much cheaper.

No, its not structural, no critical load bearing. Reminds me of the time my laborer buddy came over as I was installing a 4x4 post in the garden ( about 5 ' above ground ) and he asked why I wasn't putting crete with it, and, I told him it was only for a rain gauge .

I'm wondering about the end Posts. Here is Northern Illinois. Would you bury the end posts in Cement? Would cement leach into the Soil and be bad for the Grapes. About to start a new vinyard at a new property, much bigger than what we have done in the past, so the runs will be much longer.

When u cute the wire it can widen and screw your wire vise/bite up So its good to have a file on hand and when unrolling the wire don't pull on it roll it out instead so it remains mostly straight and does not cork screw!

so, if I want to plant just 2 grape vines, how far apart would the end posts have to be and how many line supports would I need?
@OklahomaGardening
@OklahomaGardening 10 жыл бұрын
This is what we use for our grape treillis: Vines should be spaced 8-10 feet apart. I recommend building the trellis 16-20 feet long and spacing plants evenly. The end posts needs to be very sturdy, such as 4" x 4" lumber. A center post will also be helpful to add extra support. The center post can be a metal t-post. The trellis really only needs the top wire set about 5 ½ feet above ground level. A lower wire is useful for training young vines. This one is positioned about 3 feet above ground level. For both, we use #9 wire.
@tshuster
@tshuster 13 жыл бұрын
It is not clear to me how your grape plants are spaced when planted. Your entire row is 24 feet and the grape plants should be 8 feet apart. Could you please tell me how you recommend placing the grape plants? Thanks! Great video.

I was wondering if you need to pour concrete for the 4 x 4 posts. I am doing a small set up in my backyard. I just purchase the posts. But, I have seen that other people pour concrete. My plan is to have just two plants as a small experiment. Thanks!
@OklahomaGardening
@OklahomaGardening 8 жыл бұрын
+Ivan Barrero For this project we didn't use concrete to anchor the post into the grow. They felt the poles were deep enough in the ground to support the grapes and trellis. We hope this answers your question!

I am a bit confused for the reason for the lower cordon wire. I've watched lot and lots of vids, but nobody has explained it. There is usually nothing on the lower wire. You mentioned "we use the lower wire to train the vine up to the top". How? You typically use bamboo or a string to train the trunk up to the top cordon, so the reason for the lower wire escapes me. Can you better explain it?
@GrowingDownUnder
@GrowingDownUnder 7 жыл бұрын
a grape is a vine...young grapes have fragile trunks and flop around they need something to hold onto to climb. Bamboo does work the same as the lower string by the time it reaches the top wire you would of most likely pruned it a few times and the stems will turn woody and harden this is when the grape can support its weight and the bottom wire can be removed. But if a bamboo stick works better just use that

@crip23walk23 i wouldnt be so quick to judge. it sounds as though you have an Arbor-Type trellis system, designed as you say for having a nice little shaded area to sit under. what this woman is doing is making herself a traditional fruit bearing type trellis so she can maximize the output of quality fruit, as well as having it at an easy to work on height. i would assume that this is a test run, and that she has actually built alot more of these in her fruit orchard.
